There was no sex in 70s shows???
because people were havin sex IRL.
I finally watched
Solaris (1972) -
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069293/reference/
and it absolutely fucking sucks.
.. i'm not sure i really need to go into details, because i've rarely been so sure of something. But, since this is the game;
1. this is a 2h40m film, in russian .. DUBBED. Yes, the russian language voice that you hear are overdubs of the original russian actors. There is no live-take sound.
2. half of the film is a veeeeeery streched out Twilight Zone episode.
A pilot is giving a report to some bureaucrats; he was on the alien ocean world of Solaris, and he was piloting as pilots do, and he saw a hyperrealistic hallucination. Nobody believes him.
Brief interjection of Protagonist, Dr Nick, who is at his family home, waiting to travel to Solaris station. Why? Well, because people have been reporting the same exact shit as the pilot said.
He arrives at the station, and finds that most astronauts have left, the station is half destroyed, and only 2 guys remain, both losing their mind slowly. They both claim to be still sane, but having "given up trying to understand".
3. a woman shows up out of thin air. This is Nick's wife, who killed herself years before. She seems real, can talk, touch, but doesn't remember who she is, although she remembers Nick.
Nick understands right away that this is the ocean. The film spells it out that the ocean is a thinking thing, a brain-like structure.
Now, the part between the woman and the Nick, it goes on for another fucking hour, where it's just a "do you love me? how much do you love me? how can i be SURE that you love me" film. The scifi is fucking gone man, her showing up is as scifi as you're gonna get.
And after we've been worn out by more than two hours of this, the film ends. There is a brief ending where the protagonist fully gives in to the hallucinations, now believing to be be back on earth (and has a special effect that, if anyone says it's not horrendous, they need to put a poster of the Guild Navigator in their bedroom).
.. this .. has no right to be almost three hours long. It's a very basic story that could have been fully adapted into a 80 minute movie, and there is also no need for the part of the protagonist - monster wife to be so fucking long, dramatic and repetitive. If the point is that he's losing his mind, fine, make it that and make that the main point and conclusion. If the point is "the nature of human relationships" then you really do not need the hour and a half that came before.
5/10, even considering its age and, idk contributions to scifi or something.
