Shots from a day ice fishing trip.
Hope you don't take this the wrong way but your photos look downright depressing due to the lack of sunlight. I think I would go crazy if I didn't see yellowish orange light around me for a long time. Do you/people around you and others in cold regions with very limited sunlight use artificial yellowish orange-ish lighting to feel better mentally and psychologically?

BTW, your third photo might as well be from some other icy planet.

That's kinda why I liked the way they turned out, there's a weird eerie vibe, especially the 1st one.

But yeah it's basically like this here for about 6-8 months lol. The sun actually peaked out slightly for about 30 seconds at one point though.

Stayed up for the eclipse. 200mm, 1/13s, f2.8, ISO 25600 + denoise (the base image is pretty respectable TBH). now i want a star tracker so i can use my 600mm lens. that maxes out at f6.3 and needs too long an exposure time to collect enough light without blurring the crap out of the moon.

The caveman technique that I saw was to just keep re-centering the subject and shoot many shorter exposures to stack for a final, cleaner, more detailed, image. Frustrating, but hey it might be an interesting test of patience and skill to do it the hard way and the lower the focal length, the less moving required.

TL,DR: if you have a pretty long focal length, it's going to be really annoying using this method, so don't bother with it. Instead invest in a star tracker: https://astroimagery.com/astrophotography/heres-how-to-do-astrophotography-without-tracking/

I've never understood the "stack many lower exposures" method.

Like I guess you just add the brightness values together?

As long as the orientations are aligned, it should be the equivalent of just doing a longer exposure tracked shot. But the shorter bursts eliminate any shaking in the camera or mount, and reduce the duty cycle on the sensor, which should help reduce the noise. I think there is a fair amount of software available these days that helps to automate the process.

Back in my basic research days, we would do this all the time with the NMR spectrometer we had for our experiments (in a way, each "scan" acquired was like a single photo, and they would all get added together. Thus, we could acquire a lot of scans to get an appropriate signal/noise ratio).

Crystalline preying mantis!

Happy to oblige. I was trimming and pruning potted plants a couple of weeks ago when this lady flew in and posed for this pic. Had to run in the house, set up the gear for this shot and got lucky that she was still primping and grooming her antenna when I got back to her. Shot with a EF100-400 L II. f/8 238mm

@Fenixgoon 2 shots with the new RF100-400 I picked up the other week (click through for the full sized).

Nice shots. That RF 100-400 has been on my got-to-have list for quite some time. Lucky you. After viewing your duck compositions, Imma feeling the need to get creative with the means to have that lens in hand. I've been restoring/repairing lawn mowers as a side job cash only gig. Maybe I ought to get busy with that. I used to build and repair PC's and set up small office networks to finance my gaming affliction so there's that too. Just got'ta figure a way around my retirement blues to get kick'in with that.

Thanks. It is a very nice lens, and very capable for the price. I sort of paid for mine a little by trading in an old lens I had to Hunts, and they had a "we pay the sales tax" sale the day I was buying to boot.

If you're looking to save a few bucks, you might be able to get lucky and find a refurb one at a discount from Canon's online shop. That's how I ended up with my R10.
