READ THIS!! Social Security login

OK, I have had a Login ID on login.gov for years, primarily because I use it to access my Veteran Administration information and benefits.

I have used it in the past to also access my Social Security account, in fact once I finally got login in, it shows I had last logged in, in December 2024.

Watched a YouTube about the changes that if you don't have a verified login by 3/31/25 you must show up in person at a Social Security office to prove your identity. Thought no big deal, I know I've logged into SSA many times, in addition to the VA, but let me log in again just to verify it works. Fuck me, it required many steps to again prove my identity.

From everything I had seen, having a login.gov Login ID should be all you need.

This is all from memory, as I was interested in just verifying everything was working, not documenting the steps necessary.

Did my Login ID thing, got prompted for it to send a 6-digit one-time code to my phone to then enter. I received it on my cellphone, entered it on my computer, and it got me to the next step (which should have been the SSA site, but it wasn't).

Next I told me that I needed a smartphone with a camera, and it would send a link to the smartphone. I verified the phone number, and it sent me the link.

Opened the link, and it told me to take a picture of my identification in the site that opened on the phone. Prompted through taking a picture of the front and back of my driver's license, then it told me to take a selfie. Gives a red circle where your face should be. Once it was happy with all 3 pictures, it had me submit. It took a minute or so and said ID verified, and go back to the computer.

Back on my laptop, it again wanted to send a one-time code to my phone. It came up with my phone number, then said it did not recognize the number. (This is the same number I just received the 6-digit one-time code, and the link to the site to submit photos of my driver's license and my selfie) You have 4 tries, or you have to wait 6 hours to try again. Another option to receive the code is to have a voice call, provide the one-time code. Since I still have a home phone, I entered that number, and did receive the call. It read off a 10-digit code, which I entered, and it accepted it.

I could finally access the SSA site after going through all this.

This is some screwed up shit...

Appreciate you posting this. I will have to do this for a computer illiterate, that is to say more illiterate than I, in other words a real tech basket case, and now have some idea of what I face.

I’ve had the log in ID for a couple years but haven’t looked at SSA site since 12/24.

I’ll test it tomorrow and post the results.

By design to fuck us over.

It looks to be working as a screening device that disadvantages those folks who aren't the least bit tech savvy and/or would have great difficulty showing up in person. That's a really nasty way to "weed out fraud" as their saying goes. One with any logic to guide them would have the gov't set up assistance centers to help the folks who face difficulties toward reconnecting with their accounts but then that would cost the gov't money it saved from rooting out all of those millions of ghost centenarians Elon has been incessantly whining on about.

It's much like how Republican controlled states exploit suppression tactics to drill down the numbers of folks who tend to vote Democrat.

I just logged in with ID.ME without an issue.

I did have an issue this summer, when it said there was no number on file for verification. I called, and they corrected it. Problem is, they deleted my wife's ID.ME account at the same time, without telling me.

When we called, we were told two accounts can't use the same number? So hers was deleted, without warning, and they can't bring it back. She has to start all over creating an ID.ME account.

We always used the same number. We've had that number since 1989. Are we the only couple in the system? She has a cell, but many older folks don't. Very stupid rule.

Which is easier, ID.ME, or login.gov? And is it really needed by March 31st? She won't be drawing for two more years. I'll be starting next year, at 62.

This is all I found:

When I first signed up for Medicare, I did it all online. A year later when I started drawing my SS, again I did it all online... that was over a decade ago

So why the March 31st deadline to create an account? I can't find that anywhere.

I can log into the Login.gov site, (had to do the 2 step authentication text) but Social Security says

Online Service Not Available

We're sorry, but the online service you requested isn't available right now. We apologize for the inconvenience.
In the nearly 15 years since I signed up for Social Security, I've never experienced that.

I have tried a few times in the past couple years, to log in and it was late (midnight or so), and I wasn't able to log in.

There isn't a requirement to create an account UNLESS you are making your initial filing for benefits or are changing your deposit information. And they have extended the date for making accounts online for those purposes to Apr 14. And not even all of those have to do things in person.

"Under the updated policy beginning April 14, 2025, individuals applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who cannot use a personal my Social Security account can complete their claim entirely over the telephone without the need to come into an office."

"Individuals who cannot use their personal my Social Security account to apply for benefits will only need to prove their identity at a Social Security office if applying for Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary (Spouse or Child) benefits."

"Individuals who do not or cannot use the agency’s online my Social Security services to change their direct deposit information for any benefit will need to visit a Social Security office to process the change or can call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an in-person appointment."

Just saw this.

"Yes, the Social Security Administration (SSA) website has specific online service hours, available Monday through Friday from 4:15 AM to 1 AM ET, Saturday from 5 AM to 11 PM ET, and Sunday from 8 AM to 11:30 PM ET. "

People reporting the site is still down after 9AM ET, inside the window it's supposed to be on.

Looks like they finally got the login page back up.

Bodes well for the way way bigger tasks they have ahead.

I logged in a few minutes ago. I had an old SSA login. I had to set up a login.gov account. That went smoothly. I had to update my cell number and that also worked with no issues. I downloaded my current statement. Everything seems to be working at the moment. I'm a youth so not eligible to apply for benefits so I didn't try that. I wasn't asked for proof of anything.

So you can still make an account online AFTER April 14th if not drawing benefits for 2 years, like my wife, who has to re-create her ID,ME account.
You both make it sound like there is a deadline for creating the account,

Decided to do it for my dad..

Was greeted with: You last signed in on July 27, 2018

Thankfully still had an ID.me login.. but yes everything expressed in the OP I went through back then for him when I changed his method of getting a check to direct deposit.

I would definitely change from a check to a direct deposit if you haven't already by now!

Several years ago I was going through the process for something and I setup a ID.me account. It was a process to do it which involved getting onto a conference call with a live person so they could verify who I am. I am glad I did at the time. Got my wife setup the same way. I could very much see how the process I went through would be confusing for older people.

I use ID.me. I just logged in without issue. But thanks for having me check it out.
