France’s far-right leader Le Pen sentenced to prison and banned from office in embezzlement trial

Le Pen may still appeal the four-year sentence, two years of it suspended, and five-year political ban, which came after she was found guilty of misusing $3 million to pay party staff.

That's how you deal with corrupt politicians...

She is appealing the sentence.

Rodolphe Bosselut, Le Pen's lawyer, says that his client would appeal the sentence.

Asked about Le Pen's state of mind, Bosseult says she would "tell you what's on her mind herself". Le Pen is due to be interviewed tonight at 20:00 (19:00 BST).

"What is sure is that her lawyer is very unhappy," he told French media.

You mean she wasn't granted immunity by the Cour de Cassation?

One might think France really means no one is above the law.

It's a sarcastic response.

I still find it amazing there is no provisions in the US Constitution regarding barring convicts from running for president.
One of those things they figured would be unnecessary, it used to be that even just having a sufficiently large scandal would be enough to end a political career.

There is actually a very good reason for that and all you have to do is look at which country has the largest prison population. Convicts shouldn’t be able to run for office but then again this country has a history of poor due process and because of that I certainly wouldn’t want something like the current Republican Party in charge of the executive and going after political opponents.

The founders may not have imagined an America so corrupt and despondent as to allow it in the first place.
Or if they had, perhaps they would have reasoned that no law would protect against a lawless government. As by definition - those in power would not care.

Fact is, it was Joe Biden's job to deal with this. Yet here we stand.

Personally I believe that when you have taken your punishment, you should in most cases be able to apply for any job or political position.

Obviously if you're a pedo, you shouldn't be able to work with children, if you've misused your political power, you shouldn't be able to run for office, and so on. But otherwise I believe that people should have a chance to get a real job or a political career and then let the people or their employer decide if you are good enough.

They did indeed envision the possibility, it’s why they didn’t support a direct democracy and instead supported the electoral college. What they didn’t anticipate was that the electoral college would be comprised of people who were no smarter and more enlightened than the electoral college. In fact it’s clear that the general public has been more right than wrong when it comes to picking the better choice for President.
