I'll be the complete outlier here. I'm building a house and I put the throttle down and have been spending like crazy because I know everything is going to get higher and I would have to buy it anyway.
I got all my building materials on the dip, and have bought most of the technology ahead of the tariffs.

Yeah, but the question was if my habits have changed, and they have not. I've invested in building a new garage/shop and bought a new grill to complete our garden/terrasse area. Otherwise I only buy necessities for our everyday life. I really don't need to "buy" stuff besides the basic stuff.
Your initial response seem to indicate you were not changing spending habits because you don't live in the US.

All major purchase(phones, technology, furnitrue, appliances, etc) were completed last year. Except cars. We were going back and forth on getting new cars since last year but now we will hold off indefinitely.

Only thing we are spending money on are necessities and travel. And travel is about to get cheaper. Although with points and comps it’s already cheap for us, but comps should jump a lot heading into next year.

Built a new gaming PC a couple months ago to avoid this shitshow, I was considering getting a new car as mine is 9 years old but since it still runs fine I'm just going to wait as long as I can.

I ordered an inverter Ground Source Heat Pump that won't be here until early June, to catch the pre-tarriff pricing, as an example. All the solar panels and inverter too. I'll get slapped around on fits and finishes but there is no avoiding everything.

I'm glad I upgraded to a very high end pc build last summer and did some gadget & audio upgrades and clothing upgrades this year as well. My Batcave is totally set for quite some time. Sold about 5K worth of gear as well to at least mitigate some of those costs.

I upgraded to a new laptop after the election. Tariff threats were a good part of that decision.
A number of appliances have recently been updated, simply because the old ones were failing. Took forever to get a dishwasher during COVID because of supply chain disruption. I suspect that will also become an issue again.

Grandson was looking at a second car, and I encouraged him to go ahead with that. He got a second hand 2021 with low mileage to save driving his RAM 2500 all the time. Once new cars go up $5k - $10K, used cars are going to be more in demand.

Ah, you best me on semantics

But as the import from US to Denmark is only about 5-6% of our total import, while our export is 17-18%, most of our trade is not affected by new random tariffs, while most id not all US trade now is.

So the rest of the world will find a way to trade around US, until they start acting normal.

What is changing for me is that I am becoming more of a vegetarian. I looked at some tiny pieces of meat today that were fifteen dollars and saw a six pack of Coke that was like $8.66. I used to get a dime for 5 empty bottles when I was a kid and get a full one suspended in ice water for that dime. Of course I could also buy a silver dime for ten cents in real copper. Costco also sells Wagyu for an astronomical sum. It's 20 dollars a chicken to make a cup of broth. When I was a kid stores couldn't give away fish and my Dad and I could actually safely eat the ones we could catch. I wish I could eat mussels but we used them as bate. This reminds me of a time when I wanted to buy some striped bass and noticed the flesh was full of worms. I checked carefully. When I took it back the butcher said it wasn't worms but fish cancer. I guess he thought eating fish full of cancer made it a choice cut.

Life is fun. With oyster sauce and shiitake mushrooms you can explore a world of Chineese vegetables. Like I said, life is fun.

When one door closes another opens. A saying

PS: Not sure if Trump has anything at all to do with the price of meat and that 37% tariff on Liechtenstein is just outrageous. Things get worse and we'll need three f's to spell tariff.
I put an extra R in thar for piracy, Yarrrrr.

We made large changes in where we buy. No more Amazon or Walmart at all. Costco is inconvenient for us to get to but we bought a membership after they took their stand. Now we have a kinda weird date night where we make an evening of heading to Costco on a Monday or Tuesday, buy a bunch a stuff and have a nice date night dinner together at the food court.

We moved more quickly on our solar panel install because who knows if that tax cut will stay around - let alone pricing on materials.

On the enterprise IT side its just fucking bonkers right now. Hardware quotes are all over the place as companies try to figure out what the constant back and forth on tariffs actually means. What you price out today could be 40% more or less in a couple weeks. Orders are all over the place too as some companies race to buy equipment while others pull back. Totally my opinion but I think its the companies racing to buy everything they think they'll need in the next year/till the end of fiscal year that's keeping the revenue looking kinda close to normal. Once they're stocked up orders will plummet. Everywhere I hear people are implementing strict procurement practices. Universities have put purchases on hard lockdown. So anyone who heavily relies on that almost trillion dollar industry has also put the breaks on spending. State governments have too because of Fed cuts and just general uncertainty. And the Feds certainly aren't buying anything right now.

AND you've got the federal government jacking around with certifications which impacts contracts. Is Zoom FedRAMP certified? Fuck if anyone knows for sure anymore. NIH now says no. Other government agencies say yes. The FBI will tell you "Yes", "No" and "You're not supposed to know that yet" depending on who you talk to.

I'm smoking/vaping more these last few months. Both to-backy and the devil's lettuce. Trying to quit cigs.

Otherwise, I'm just paying shit down as per usual and not making any large purchases. I had been looking at getting a used car later this year but that might be out the window depending on the market.

And the unspoken, who's going to do the home remodeling, the roofs, the flooring. Just locked up 37 roofers in the Seattel area.

At our recent company all-hands call, they specifically called out how making an economic forecast was difficult at this point (this was before the tariffs were officially unveiled).

Just checked and it looks like I’m now down nearly 9% across various portfolios. That’s the equivalent of a nice 2 week summer vacation in Europe for a family of four. This sucks…especially now that we’re down to 1 salary.

edit—to clarify, the 9% is what I’m down YTD. The summer vacation budget is what was wiped out over the past 3 days.

Have a trip to Japan planned later this year. Purchased a bunch of Yen now just in case the exchange rate goes to crap.

Basically, not really buying anything extravagant. We need a piece of furniture or two after we move this June, and my wife may need a new laptop. If her program doesn't give her an educational stipend for equipment, we'll probably try to buy one soon from in-US stock.

I have a trip to Japan in ~20 days, but I'm just going to take money out of an ATM while I'm there or use a CC with no foreign transaction fee. Though, we're not planning on doing a lot of shopping (though, I might try to pick up a nice watch while I'm there because it's tax free and partly as a souvenir)

Like most other Canadians, not buying made in US. But I’ll still shop weekly at Costco. Need to support the Canadian workers there and the stuff I routinely get are locally sourced.
Costco gets soooo much of my business. I used to go every other week but have longer betweens lately but seldom go over a month. They have refused to cancel their DEI cred, BTW. I have an Executive Membership, which costs twice the usual and I'm the only one that uses it. Around a year ago they approached me at the register and said my data shows I'd benefit (get extra cash back). I took their word for it. I went in there the other day and noticed that most of the clothes I had on I bought there: Socks, pants, shirt, underwear, vest. I get a whole lot of my food there, fresh produce, and packaged. I have been good at buying in bulk for years.

That’s what I don’t get with some Canadians. Only support Canadian companies!!!! Umm we have very few of them left. They can’t come close to the volume Costco, Walmart, McD handles. And these mega corps employs millions of Canadians. Like come on, our oldest and largest retailer, The Hudson Bay company is facing bankruptcy in these times. And fast food restaurant only use Canadian meats. Can’t do much about importing veggies and condiments though.

Taking the big plunge, you gonna get it done this summer?
