Trade tariffs imposed on tiny Australian territories that are either uninhabited or claim to have no trading relationship with the US appear to have been calculated based on erroneous trade data.

In some cases involving Norfolk Island, which is 1,600km north-east of Sydney and has a population of 2,188, the confusion appears to have resulted from the fact that the company’s address or port of departure is Norfolk, UK, or the destination is Norfolk, Virginia in the US, or a company’s registered address in New Hampshire (NH) has been listed instead as Norfolk Island (NI).

No tariffs on North Korea or Cuba (though presumably neither of them export anything of significance to the US? Are they sanctioned already?). Curiously, Israel gets the 10% treatment.
in 2024 Cuba exported 4.9 million to usa and nearly 100% embargo on imports from north korea.

Btw these tariffs were calculated to reduce american spending on imports and force american purchases (even where not possible). The whole thing was ding dong with huge cost on americans and doom to failure (imho)

Yea, you can't just impose this on day 1. You would have to ramp it up and provide companies years to move manufacturing back to the US. The question they failed to ask before going on this adventure is do Americans even want jobs assembling shoes and stitching t-shirts?

They very clearly did it based on internet domain which is how we ended up enacting tariffs on our own military bases or uninhabited islands.

It’s not just that their ideas are bad, it’s that they are utterly incompetent.

Another night, another Russian bombing campaign across Ukraine.
It is madness that this sort of bombing campaign is not occurring in Moscow.

Russia is right now double tapping Kryvyi Rih with Shahed kamikaze drones. Right after killing kids with ballistic missiles, they are probably trying to hit the rescue workers.
  • Kryvyi Rih. Friday evening. (NSFL) A mother sits next to the body of her dead son, holding the hand from which the last warmth slips away, second by second.

OK at this point it seems well-established they just used an utterly nonsensical mathematical formula (tariff-rate = trade-deficit divided by value-of-what-country-buys-from-US, then halved, then treated as a percentage for some weird reason).

And the worst of it (IMO) is that it ends up imposing massive tariffs on extremely poor countries like Cambodia or Sri Lanka, largely because those countries are too poor to want to buy the things the US tends to export, so the denominator is small.

This is just vicious cruelty. Imposing still more suffering on countries that are already in a bad situation. Everything else aside, the US needs to be treated as a pariah state for this.

[Edit, for some reason this discussion has ended up in the wrong thread, apologies]

It is worse than that; as Trump also cut off all aid to those countries - the same sort of double whamy on both poor in usa and poor countries...

Saw this , made me smile

"Ukrainian forces reportedly struck the only plant in Russia that produces fiber optic cables that are vital for Russian forces' fiber optic drones. Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation Head Lieutenant Andriy Kovalenko stated on April 5 that unspecified drones hit the Fiber Optic Systems plant in Saransk, Republic of Mordovia.[8] Kovalenko stated that the plant produces materials for control, communication, and data transmission systems, including drone control in the Russian military. Geolocated footage published on April 5 shows an explosion and fire in Saransk.[9] The Fiber Optic Systems plant is the first and only plant manufacturing optical fiber in Russia.[10] A Russian insider source claimed that the plant produces all the Russian military's fiber optic cables.[11] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed that Russian forces shot down three drones over the Republic of Mordovia overnight, and the Republic of Mordovia Head Artyom Zdunov claimed that a drone struck an enterprise in the republic.[12] ISW cannot independently verify the damage to the Fiber Optic Systems plant, but successful Ukrainian strikes against the enterprise would likely reduce the Russian military's ability to supply troops with fiber optic cables to use with first-person view (FPV) drones on the battlefield."

Fewer of any drone the Russians can field, the better, but especially those using fiber optic tethers.

OUCH, this hurts even worse and they should start to move to copper again. Or to silver if they don't want interferences.

Also with the economic crash, China won't help Russia as always.

Russians and Republicans are openly campaigning to usurp Democracies across Europe by funding and organizing pro-Russia parties and having them vow to fight for Russia against Europe. It's what Musk wants to do in Germany, etc. This time Romania. To be clear, this is probably an organized effort against EVERY single Democracy in the world.
