Discussion [HWUB] Nvidia has a driver overhead problem. . .

I'd think that if AMD was sitting on the patent for a significant amount of time before the development of DXR, Inline Ray Tracing would have been a part of DXR 1.0 instead of joining over a year later as a part of DXR 1.1.

Discussion [HWUB] Nvidia has a driver overhead problem. . .

RT hardware didn't go into consoles because of the Turing launch but they might have gone into them because of the Turing RTRT plans. Given how long it likely takes for a API like DXR to be cooked up, the other involved parties would have been in on Nvidia's RTRT plans for Turing a good deal of...

Discussion [HWUB] Nvidia has a driver overhead problem. . .

I don't know if RTRT was always the plan for the new consoles. The patent for AMD's RT hardware solution was filed in December 2017, that's just months before DXR was launched and well after Turing was designed. Honestly, a the relatively late addition of RTRT hardware as a feature requirement...

Question 'Ampere'/Next-gen gaming uarch speculation thread

Are you sure? I could be mistaken but I lurk Beyond3D and RealWorldTech forums a lot and I've seen "tape outs" explained numerous times, tape out leaks are commonly discussed and the discussions always to refer to tape outs and getting silicon back as very separate things.

Question 'Ampere'/Next-gen gaming uarch speculation thread

Has Kopite clarified that as their meaning? I mean those are two very different things. I know of other "tape out" leaks that were clearly leaks of the actual tape out, the original Ampere/GA100 tape out leak for instance. That seems so fast though, I've always heard it's like six months from...

Question 'Ampere'/Next-gen gaming uarch speculation thread

Wasn't Kopite adamant GA102 taped out in March? Is it even possible for Nvidia to have gotten silicon back so quickly?

The "Ampere" A100 Whitepaper: https://www.nvidia.com/content/dam/en-zz/Solutions/Data-Center/nvidia-ampere-architecture-whitepaper.pdf That's a rather dramatic improvement in TC performance, it will be interesting to see what they end up looking like in the consumer GPUs down the line.

    Question DLSS 2.0

The DLSS 2.0 presentation from GTC 2020. https://developer.nvidia.com/gtc/2020/video/s22698 There are some examples in there of how DLSS can at times produce a closer to "ground truth" image quality than even native resolution.

    Question DLSS 2.0

Right, but as a concept and regarding the developmental work, it seems MLSS/DLSS was very much "invented" by Nvidia. Also, looking over the DirectML papers and presentations I can find, Nvidia's collaborations and contributions during it's development dwarf any other hardware vendor. DXR is...

    Question DLSS 2.0

Am I missing something? In that presentation, the MLSS/DLSS model is specifically credited to Nvidia. It seems very much like Nvidia's baby to me.

RTX continues to seriously disappoint me

Reproducing it confirms it's an actual issue, which it clearly is or at least was back then. Since we've seen false narratives about BFV's RTX implementation pushed to drum up outrage before, you don't think maybe we should be prudent and get solid confirmation about these things before going...

RTX continues to seriously disappoint me

If it is what it's being suggested it is, it would have to be reproducible. Perhaps someone with BFV and an RTX compatible card could verify?

[ Digital Trends ] Radeon Image Sharpening competes with DLSS

It's going to depend on the engine. Most game engines aren't really set up properly for ideal NN training yet. This is probably why the quality of DLSS is varying so much between games so far. This along with the lack of DirectML support seems to have signifigantly gimped DLSS on the quality...

[Rumor, Tweaktown] AMD to launch next-gen Navi graphics cards at E3

Windows NT supported a host of RISC ISA's and Intel was pursuing Itanium for the long term. AMD kept x86 alive, kept it relevant and their cross license with Intel made x86 effectively a duopoly. Then Intel and AMD's deals with Microsoft and OEMs killed IBM, Dell and HP's early 2000s efforts to...

[Rumor, Tweaktown] AMD to launch next-gen Navi graphics cards at E3

It's off-topic.. but the short answer, x86-64. They empowered and worked with Intel (and Microsoft) to ensure Windows was effectively locked to x86 and the only choice for PC gaming.

[Rumor, Tweaktown] AMD to launch next-gen Navi graphics cards at E3

AMD was instrumental in creating the Windows PC gaming monopoly and the current discreet GPU vendor duopoly. They worked hard to get things the way they are, there's plenty of incentive for them to try and maintain their position, even if it's a weaker position than their competitor. Do you...

[Rumor, Tweaktown] AMD to launch next-gen Navi graphics cards at E3

I was under the impression that Steam survey was flawed and not representative at all of actual marketshare, specifically in relation to AMD's numbers. Market data analysis is actually what I've been trying to find and look at but clearly I'm not seeing what you're seeing. Edit I'm not going to...

[Rumor, Tweaktown] AMD to launch next-gen Navi graphics cards at E3

Are you sure? Cursory research is showing me that the RX 570 is AMD best selling card and was/is outselling it's closest Nvidia counterpart all along, since day one even.

[Rumor, Tweaktown] AMD to launch next-gen Navi graphics cards at E3

Is Nvidia outselling AMD in that market segment (where AMD is competitive) to the degree they are across other segments?
  22. F

[Rumor, Tweaktown] AMD to launch next-gen Navi graphics cards at E3

Everything I've seen indicates that people want competition... period, so that whatever purchase they make, it will be cheaper and Nvidia seemingly has a more performant and feature rich product right now so obviously that's what plenty of people would prefer. This isn't abnormal or illogical in...

Info [Anand et al.] NVIDIA Releases DirectX Raytracing Driver for GTX Cards

RTX is an umbrella term that encompasses more than just ray tracing, for instance DLSS is considered "RTX technology". https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/nvidia-dlss-your-questions-answered/ Here is Nate Oh's article on RTX, some good info there...

    1660Ti Reviews Thread

Even so, I mean look at the spec differences between TU106 and TU116, the difference between the die sizes isn't much more than the difference in CUDA core count and TU106 has a larger memory bus width to boot. Also if the Tensor cores were doing double duty as FP16 units then they...

    [GameGPU] Rainbow 6 Siege

Developers need to start using some kind of sharpening pass by default or at least include it as an option in game. FarCry 4's HRAA integrates unsharp masking directly with pretty good results, so it can certainly be done. It seems like an easy solution to the problem of high frequency detail...

Luxmark V3 and Render/Gaming GPU Compute Efficiency

[HEXUS]Overclocked 980 series big power consumption

To be fair, you have to remember that the HD 7970 and HD 7950 were heavily hyped as the first available 28nm based GPUs. People were really expecting more from a simultaneous arch change and fab shrink, that plus the fact that it broke AMD's relatively long standing pricing tradition was a...

DirectX and OpenGL to get low level access according to leaked statements (GDC 2014)

How many times has AMD taken the initiative, pioneered a new feature first, by themselves and ultimately kept it open? I can only think of a few cases. AMD very rarely has the appropriate leverage or market share to provide a successful proprietary feature. Any company that actively supports...
