I thought RAID 5 requires only 3 drives (LostCiruits article)

Pretty much it is the number of twists over length. The higher the number of twists, the less crosstalk, the higher the quality of signal over distance. Cat 5e has more twists over a length then Cat 5 does, so it is rated for longer distance at higher speeds.

Both Seagate 120GB in raid seem under reported

That's probably about right. Couple things to consider: 1) HD specs are done with 1000bytes = 1kb while your machine will read in 1024bytes = 1kb. This will take 3gb right off the top. 2) File allocation tables will probably use up another 5gb or so if you use it as one large partition.

$249(no rebates) 2.2ghz Emachine 128mb ram/40gig HD/Cdrom/Windows XP/10/100 lan and 56k modem.

Dead in Minneapolis too....kinda. I called 3 stores and all had it for $249 but only if you bought the packaged monitor with it for $209. Not sure what kind of monitor it was...might be still good if you need a monitor. I did manage to get one yesterday though, when the price was still right.

Mad dog 16x dvd drive help needed.

Just picked up this drive from $20 from CompUSA. I went ahead an installed it but windows 2k is not recognizing it properly. When win2k booted up it installed it as a "Removable Drive" instead of a dvd drive and consequently does not work. I searched the forums and there seems to be a few...

Do you really need to do full backups every night? Most places I have worked for did a full twice a month and then incrementals every other day. Not quite as easy, but you should be able to keep your current tape drive if you did it this way.

Man, I just used MS Flight Simulator 2000 to recreate one of the flights into the WTC...

I feel so bad. When I was younger, back in the days of flight sim 2 or 3 I remember taking a few dives into the Sears tower / TWC. Of course that was with a single engine prop that would bounce off. It was about the only fun I would have back then with that game. Not so funny anymore. ERJ

what will be the next local bus to replace PCI?

I agree that an optical bus would be pretty cool but wouldn't the mechanisms for translating to and from the optical signal for the peripherals and CPU negate any real advantage to this? I guess that we will have to develop full optical CPUs then ;) ERJ

Can someone explain to me why IRQ's are so frustrating and limiting?

I am not sure exactly how relavent this is anymore but here is a brief interrupt description coupled with an asm tutorial: External Interrupts ERJ P.S. Why would processors ever need to be 128bit? 64bit processors give addressable memory up to 18*10^18 bits. Not big enough for ya? ;)

Here's something interesting... No 3dfx support in WinXP

Am I wrong because it seems to me that Nvidia never bought out 3dfx, they just bought their intellectual property. If this is the case, I don't know how much you can fault nvidia for not supporting 3dfx products. ERJ

What components should I put in this Linux server?

X Windows or No X Windows? Actually it makes a big difference. I have a Cyrix 150Mhz machine with 64mb or RAM that runs linux with apache and sendmail and acts as a router with hardly any CPU usage. If you run X Windows you will need a bit more to be comfortable but a 200-300Mhz machine...

2-40gig or 1-80gig...?

Another vote for 1-80gb. Speed shouldn't be an issue for storing mp3's and you will have less heat and more space in your case. As it is, those large drives are pretty quick due to the fact that they have such high density platters (not faster then the two drives in RAID but fast enough)...

Urgent Kyro 2 problem......
