Hehe, thanks for the reminder. I've been doing quite well! Busy with work, and I finally finished school. I wish I could spend more time at AT, but I don't have the time to read/post like I did when I was procrastinating doing my homework during school :P
Sorry, it's no joke :(
The bad news is that I don't work for the company that it's co-located at anymore so I don't have direct access to the box. Worst case is that I can get access on Monday.
After 495 days without reboot my server appears to be down. I have no idea what happened to my box, so I can't really say how long until it's back up.
I'll keep you posted.
Martin, I'm responsible for the entire server side backend. The site is written in C#/ASP.Net 2.0 and utilizes a SQL Server backend. So my part was to write all the authentication stuff (custome providers), data access stuff (again, implemented the provider model), and wrote and the SQL stuff...
Really? We did some testing on Opera and found some minor quirks but it worked pretty well for the most part. Would you be able to describe the problem or take a screenshot?
Well... the next release (plan on updating the live site on Fridays) has 0 XHTML validation errors at least. Having script tags in the body only seems to cause validation errors under a strict doctype. I've also put most of the inline javascript in seperate script files. I'll see what I can do...
The code is going through the validator now. In general the XHTML is valid. Need to properly escape some characters and it will validate. The only JavaScript that is outside the head tag is for the flash detection, otherwise all the other JavaScript tags are within head.
Sorry for the crosspost; this is a branch off of the thread in software/programming.
I have programmed the backend for CBC Radio 3, let me know what you think. The site is a branch of the governement funded Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that is striving to promote indie Canadian music.
I've heard amazing things about Hibernate for Java. There's a .Net port of it called nHibernate out there that is growing fast. I've started playing with DataBlock and it looks pretty slick. I haven't started using the objects in any code yet so I don't know exactly how well it has worked...
Yup, you can import Access easily using SQL DTS.
So far the launch date for phase #1 is in a few weeks. I am now working with a designer and he's bloody amazing. I'll keep you posted when the new site launchs.
Holy smokes... talk about being raised from the dead.
So far this has been a great experience. I've onto my 11th week and I am developing a nice robust blog engine in .Net. So far I am the lone programmer since this company has experienced some job action stuff (I've been working from home...
Your question is difficult to answer becuase that's the subject that people have studied for years attempting to figure out. What you are looking for is "relation database design". I can think of 2 entities and 1 relationship in your design. Your entities are Users and Parts. The relationship is...
I'm very excited :). I might be a little in over my head, but it's that's the sort of kick in the pants I need right now. School is done, and my current job isn't challenging enough.
Check the update :)
Also... for those interested... my new job is for CBC Radio 3. It is the online segment of CBC promoting Canadian indie musicians. I go to about 50 concerts a year, and used to religisously listen to this site. My job involves the merge of about 5 other related sites into...
Sorry, no can do... hard to do those type of games while at work. I prefer doing a turn every 90min or so. I see you joined GK, so when you do feel up for a correspondence game, just shoot me a challenge.
Gameknot
That's where I play. It's pseudo correspondence and it's great! You can login and view all current active games. When it's your turn to move, simply make your move and wait for your opponent. Some people play only a couple turns a day, others try and get the game done within a few...
computeerrgghh, very nice! Happen to have the PGN for the game?
ifoundthetao, Capablanca and Tal are my favourites. Tal is always entertaining because he comes up with moves from no where!
dowxp, sure! Signup on Gameknot and send a challenge to mucman... Or we can start a game in this...
My Chess page
The "March of the Pawns" game is my favourite.
I'm trying to stick with a couple openings and gain experience with those. As white I like the Ruy Lopez, and as black I prefer the Sicilian. Getting my arse handed to me by this one German dude I am playing though.
Let me...
Schnieds, thanks for your advice. I have done plenty of OOP in school and on my own using Java and C++. I'm actually quite familiar with ASP.NET and know all about how it works. I have 2 years of experience running IIS6 servers and have dealt with many ASP.NET related issues which have further...
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
The fate of my server is still unknown. My boss hasn't said anything about it, and I'm not sure when I should bring it up.
I already know it will be using MS SQL Server 2000 and C#/ASP.NET. I've done some sophisticated intranets using ASP and SQL Server, but ASP.NET will be quite the jump. I'm familiar with the framework from an administrative point of view at least.
This is a heads up to all those using my Seti@Home queue. I'll be giving my 2 weeks at my current employer (where I have my server co-located for free) and I'm not sure what's going to happen to my box afterwards. I'll have more information this coming week after I have notified my boss about my...
Thanks for the replies. I understand that 3 months is definitely short. It's long from my perspective because my job has been mostly writing scripts. The most code I've had to write for a single project has been around 1000-1500 lines of code plus the database schema. So imagine if you were in...
Hey everyone... I am currently a sysadmin/programmer for a tiny web hosting company. I feel like there's no more room for me to grow here so I've been out job hunting. It's a boring job and I've been here for four years. I have also just recently finished school (comp-sci degree) and I want a...
I'm writing a perl script to auto assign groups for a golf trip that myself and a bunch of friends are going on. Every year there is a huge issue with people golfing several times with one person and not playing with someone else. I'm trying to come up for the algorithm to do this, but I'm not...
I've been running FreeBSD 5-RELEASE on my Dell 600m for 1.5 years without any problems. The wireless actually works better than in Windows (where it randomly drops for some reason). I just got my OpenBSD 3.7 CD's so I am planning on replacing FreeBSD with it so I can have more hands on...
Forgot about that feature... then again, this site is handy for those trying to communicate code snippets via IRC of IM as well. Plus the code hilighting is pretty :)
I have a perl script that reads a POP mailbox for emails of a particular form. If the the form is correct, it can obtain a variable which is the server that it should reboot. It uses the sysinterals pstools to perform the reboot. Works like a charm.
