Lenovo or something else? NO DELL...

My brother has a z61 Thinkpad and it is an awesome machine IMO. I personally woundn't want one though (prefer the T series - if they just had integrated DVI and IEEE 1394 I would have bought one), mainly because of its thickness but I may just be a bit spoiled in that regard by my MBP...

Widescreen Thinkpad T-Series Coming in October

Nevermind the widescreen... Hello Lenovo! I wasconsidering a T60p about a month ago... but you blew it completely. I really need Firewire/IEEE1394 for video editing and my high res display at home loves the DVI thing. Sure I could have bought the docking station which has DVI but thats even...

When do the new Core 2 Duo mobile CPU's for laptops come out?

New machines will be available at around september. If you want a new laptop there is no reason not to get one of the new Core 2 Duos then. Otherwise you will always be waiting for the next best thing, I don't regrett getting my core duo machine a month ago at all.

What card is needed to play WoW

30FPS minimum @ 1280x1024? I get those framerates with my old 9600pro and XP2200+ system... My MacBookPro does about 30 FPS in Ogrimmar when running WoW in Windows without Overclock or "reClock" as some would call it. When the X1600 gets clocked to the speed it runs at in other less thinner...

    $800 Budget - Need a laptop/tablet

Well... if it has to be new, get a Dell but with that budget I would seriously be looking at used machines. You can get 14" T40s and T41s used at that price. The risk ist that the battery will not be as long lasting as it once was though - an inherent problem when buying used laptops. A new...

Laptops - Do you shut them off or put them in standby/sleep mode?

It's always been standby for me ever since my first mac laptop. When I use Windows laptops I usually shut them down unless I know that standby works well on that particular machine (some Dells, the Thinkpads and odd HP laptop that we have at work). I always close all the apps down though...

What laptop manufacturer do you like?

pretty much tied for first place in terms of build quality and service these are the only Laptops I would personally buy (can't afford one? - save more money until you can!): Thinkpad T-Series, Apple MBPro HP comes in second, I really like the design on these and HPs service is good aswell. I...

I have 6 to 700 bills, and starting college, best notebook?

At that pricepoint it's going to be a Dell with integrated graphics... which isn't all that bad though! At least their customer service is quite decent.

It can't be this hard, can it?

My flatmate has a Thinkpad X-Series from work and it is a great little light machine. It is very expensive though considering what you are getting for the money. A MacBook is a good choice and suprisingly good value too. The Asus W3J is also a really nice laptop... unless you live in europe...

    College laptop: Macbook pro?

At the moment at least, bootcamp is not really usefull for stuff other than games. The biggest problem is the lackluster support of the Apple laptops integrated keyboard. Until this is fixed, the only way to get good reults is to use an external USB keyboard. Running Windows in a Parallels...

Upgrade Macbook Pro to Core Duo 2

The new MacBooks aren't going to be out till around September. (Perhaps for the Mac-Expo in Paris?) I just got my MBP last week and am very happy with it. No whine, no build defects and the heat is what I was expecting of a thin, powerfull Laptop with a shell made of heat conducting material.

    T42 for $750 or Macbook for $999..

As others have alreay said, unless you want to use OS-X as your primary OS I wouldn't really recommend buying an Apple. Don't get me wrong, they are excellent machines and exactly what I was looking for: A very fast OSx capable machine which can boot into windows for some gaming and can run Win...

    20.1" widescreen laptop

Sorry but a puny 7600 graphics matched to a nice 1680x1050 screen ain't gonna cut it. By being that huge they have already clearly stated that this thing is not going to be run und batteries so why not use a 7900 chip - or do they at least have an option for that?

What is the best backlit keyboard?

The G15 is really nice, if I were in the market for a new keyboard, that would be it (and I am not even a gamer - the programmable keys would come in handy for stuff like Premiere or Blender)

Energy Companies Choose Nuke Plant Site

I think the main problem with wind is the need to have a grid capable of shifting large loads around and to have extra generating capacity available, both at short notice to be able to cover wind shortfalls. The North American power grid is not layed out to do that due to the large geographical...

Any Linux experience with an Abit AT8?

I really like what i am reading about the Abit AT8 board, here at AT and elsewhere. It is at the right price, the right feature set and best of all: it is completely silent. Now I was wondering how well the board is supported in Linux. Specifically Ubuntu (Dapper Drake will probably be out by...

what software that you use regularly now would you not be able to use if you bought a mac or used linux

Lack of apps.. or should I say a decent GUI. The underlaying programmes are there, just using them is a pain in the keester. Unless you want to do a simple DVD (for which there are a few GUIs) you will have to MANUALLY edit an XML descriptor file... eeeeeerrr no thanks - I just wanted to make a...

what software that you use regularly now would you not be able to use if you bought a mac or used linux

DVD authoring is next to impossible on Linux. But other than that and the obvious games I see no reason not to use linux - other than that I currently have an ATI graphics card and the linux drivers totally SUCK, major upgrade with NVIDIA card is coming up soon for that very reason ;)

If you are in the US and think your health care system sucks, please get a perspective.

Ahh you see, I didn't even want to go near the dental aspects which is a completely different can of worms and I freely admit it sucks big time and only covers the basics of the basics! Once you earn enough money it really is worth getting at least a private dental plan, on this I agree 100%. On...

If you are in the US and think your health care system sucks, please get a perspective.

That's also pretty much the way the german system works but with substantially shorter delays than in the UK due to a much higher capacity of the health care system in general. But still there are indeed tiers in the system, privately insured you naturally get top priority for stuff like scans...

XP won't Run on Intel-based Macs

Yes VM-Ware and Virtual PC do create an additional Hardware Abstraction Layer but the point is that VPC on the Macbook now doesn't have to do all the CPU consuming x86 ISA -> PPC ISA conversion so it will run much much faster than before, just not as fast as if it were native. Perhaps CEDEGA /...

MacBook Pro Dual-core Performance <-- Intel Processor

Then again I wouldn't compare Dell's build quality with Apple Powerbooks (MacBooks) or Lenovo/IBM Thinkpads... the latter two are just in a different league and I would rather spend more for good on the road ruggedness than just raw "powaaaah". The company I work for has given up on Dell and...

Well that more or less sums up what I am going to be buying soon aswell. I want...

Multpile OS's, large files, which FS?

I have my fast drives running locally. New stuff that usually arrives on external drives will just be shared and copied over via the Net. Multpile OS's, large files, which FS?

Hmmm good ideas... a small, not increadibly fast, low power box (something with a VIA Epia maybe that can be cooled very quietly), gigabit card and running Windows with Network shares. (Windows so I have a central point to connect high capacity NTFS formatted external HDDs) I do have a...

Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) problems

On point 2: install SAMBA from the Fink repository. It helps sometimes if you are having problems with Windows shares. Multpile OS's, large files, which FS?

OK, some may remember that I posted last week in a Linux discussion why I can't use the penguin as my main OS. The reasons were the unavailability of programmes for Video-Editing and some 3D animation work. Since then I have gotten suggestions for a few proggies that could fill that space...
