  1. General VR discussion thread

I just played through Vader Immortal Ep1 on my Rift. It's not a sophisticated game, but wow, if you ever wanted to actually be *in* a Star Wars movie, this is the way to do it! I just hope there's a bit more gameplay in the following episodes. Also, although being able to wield a lightsaber...

Frozen 2 - This one is definitely a mixed bag. The soundtrack is nowhere near the quality of the first film, and the first half of the movie needed serious editing. There's an entire subplot and song with Kristoff that should've been completely cut. On the plus side, the movie manages to pull...

The Lighthouse Main Reaction: What. The. F*ck. More details: I saw The Witch recently and it was enjoyable, and this move currently has 91% critic and 83% audience on RT so I figured Eggers' second film would be good. It's not completely terrible, but it wasn't for me. The film is shot in...

I saw Glass on Saturday, I give it 7/10. I was worried about the low RT score (currently 37%), but I think they got it wrong this time. It's not a perfect movie but I thought it was a very good conclusion to the trilogy (Unbreakable/Split/Glass). Also notice that the RT audience score is 79%...

This would be awesome - I would definitely buy a Quest if I could use it in tethered mode with full graphics from my 1070, or as a standalone unit with the limited graphics it provides. But I don't think that feature is there today.
  6. General VR discussion thread

Streaming is never going to work for VR, because of the latency requirements for actions like turning your head. Trying to stream that would almost certainly make everyone sick.
  7. General VR discussion thread

The Oculus Quest is very interesting, but I'm concerned about how much 3D horsepower they can really fit into a standalone unit that is only $400 - especially one that has a resolution higher than the Rift.
  8. What book(s) are you reading right now?

I'm also reading that, but I'm back on Summer Knight. Enjoying it so far, though I don't think I'm going to read the whole thing right now. I have books 1-6. Can you recommend a good stopping point? It does seems like the series has been building up to something. EDIT: Looked around a bit...

The opening keynote of the Oculus Connect event is at 1 PM Eastern/10 AM Pacific today. There may be some new product announcements.

If anyone tries out Marvel Powers United VR, I'd be curious to hear your report.

Great, now I just need a quad-1080Ti PC setup to run that thing.
  12. Official Destiny Thread

I haven't played for quite a while, but I'll probably jump back in once this latest expansion is out.
  13. VLAN design help!

I'm not trying to be offensive, but it sounds like you are attempting to design a network but have absolutely no idea what you are doing. You should seriously consider hiring professional help for this project. An important question that no one seems to have asked is what is the topology of...
  14. What book(s) are you reading right now?

I just finished The Commonwealth Saga by Peter F. Hamilton. It's essentially one huge novel split into 2 books. Humanity has invented wormhole technology and spread across dozens of planets, but then discovers a puzzling star that seems to have been instantly enclosed by what they originally...
  15. What book(s) are you reading right now?

This series starts out well but goes sadly downhill after book 3-4.
  16. What book(s) are you reading right now?

I'm into the 5th book now, but the link I provided is the whole thing for free.
  17. What book(s) are you reading right now?

Currently reading The Phantom of the Earth which is a pretty cool SF series that's available for free on Amazon. I have no idea why the author gives this away, it's really quite good. It's a far-future setting where the surface of the Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by an engineered...
  18. My frustrations as a network engineer

Not if you are sitting on a subnet that has hijacked routable IP space. If you attempt access to an Internet site that overlaps the subnet you are on, your machine will just ARP for that IP and fail miserably, the traffic will never make it to your NAT router. Of course the other 99.9% of the...
  19. My frustrations as a network engineer

It will matter a whole lot as soon as you try to access a site over the Internet that is legitimately using that IP range.
  20. Christmas story live

I still need to see that. I'll have to bump it up on the list.
  21. Christmas story live

So much fail! Best Christmas movies of all time: #1 A Christmas Story #2 Die Hard #3 How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966, not that 2000 travesty) A Christmas Story literally has multiple scenes pulled straight from my childhood, including the stuck tongue (no it wasn't me!).

The Oculus store is having "A Year of Touch" anniversary flash sale. Superhot VR is $10, plus a bunch of other deals.
  25. General VR discussion thread

The Oculus store is having a horror sale for Halloween, and Boogeyman is only $1. Anyone recommend this game? For $1, I'll probably get it regardless.
  26. Official Destiny Thread

It is fun, and it gets downright silly if you have a Titan wearing Actium War Rig - endless hail of bullets. You will burn through kinetic ammo like there's no tomorrow, though.
  27. General VR discussion thread

Oculus is having a flash sale but only for about 5 more hours. Most notably, Edge of Nowhere is on sale for $5. https://www.oculus.com/experiences/section/rift/1847066828916572/
  28. Official Destiny Thread

I'm happy to help with anything people need, but I'm not quite raid-ready yet. I'm getting there though - 245 Warlock and 262 Titan. PSN: Pheran1
  29. Official Destiny Thread

I'll be starting the game tonight. I got into Destiny very late (after RoI), which seems like a good thing considering the initial state of the game, but I enjoyed it a lot so I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

I'm thinking of getting Elite Dangerous while it's on sale. Anyone use Touch controllers with this, or is a joystick the better option?

Funniest eclipse-related thing we saw - on the way back from Columbia we were avoiding highway traffic and found this. Some guy built a crazy UFO "welcome center" in his yard. Article: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/10911

Success in South Carolina! We had to flee the SC coast because of cloud cover. Oddly enough I ended up viewing from a Costco in Columbia, SC. Surprisingly that worked great - we had food and restrooms, a nice little shaded area at the entrance, and it wasn't crowded. We had a few minor cloud...
