VMware ESX Desktop Hardware Compatibllity?

Works on a 2900. You might have an HBA that's not on there. It would have to be a specific piece of hardware, probably one you didn't get with a standard order from Dell. But it will definitely work on a poweredge 2900.

Simple drive mapping question

Logon script in your profile's startup folder. Are you can add it to Run in the registry as well. You'd want to put the user/pass combo in there so it's not the most secure solution but you can always encrypt if your want to get really elaborate. Just google network drive logon script...

running Cat5 cable through the house...

Yeah, typically raceway is your best choice here. If you can snake the cable into a closet and go up/down through there, with the rest hid under carpet at ground level, it can be pretty much non visible.

speed over lan on wireless

Check out the anandtech homepage for the TrendNet 802.11n draft 2.0 AP review. Pushing 90Mb under ideal conditions, including encrypted traffic. It may be getting closer to upgrade time.

Bit too broad of a question. I would do as suggested and google it. No shortage of literature online. If your interested in VMWare specifically (VMWare does pretty much own the market now but is not the only option. Microsoft, Xen etc..) their webpage offers plenty of documentation...

explorer.exe memory leak

Yeah, 60-80MB for explorer after any amount of uptime isn't a memory leak. Watching it climb and continue, say in upwards of 100, 200, 300 etc, then you have a problem. Going to 80 and maintaining after a day or two is normal.

300 bucks new. Hard to imagine you really need a managed switch for home use. Certainly possible you could use the functionality if you need shaping or throttling capabilities, something like that. Assuming that Dell has these features. But by and large this would be unecessary overkill for most.

Off topic but if you have a way to use Component video cable, or better yet, DVI or HDMI then you'd see a significant improvement in image quality. S-Video is simply an unacceptable interface after using higher end methods to move video signals.

Have your tech look at it. Could be duplexing or a speed mismatch. Could be a hardware issue. Could be cable or a port. Could be alot of things. That's what techs' get paid for though so I'd recommend having yours give it the once over.
