    Red Hat, AD, and Winbind

I assumed you would ;) Here's the thing. Mine is blank - completely blank. This is the one thing, that a lot of instructions will tell you to put all the information you have in your krb5.conf. However, if you just leave it blank, then it automatically detects all that based on the realm you...

Really? I've never had an issue with bouncing DC's. They do them one at a time, right? What is in your /etc/krb5.conf ?

    Red Hat, AD, and Winbind

If you are using Red Hat, then yes. I would prefer Likewise-open, but Red Hat does not distribute it. If you want to stick with official Red Hat packages, then Winbind is your ONLY option. FYI, Ubuntu does include Likewise-open, if you consider going that route. Although to be honest, I've...

Debian Base OS on RAID 0 + RAID 5 and VirtualBox vs. ESXi

VirtualBox has gotten even better since Oracle acquired it. Since it's open source, if Oracle ever does screw it up, it will likely be forked and carry on, like LibreOffice. VirtualBox + phpvirtualbox works pretty awesome. I can't remember sources, but just in the last couple months I've seen...

Windows 2008 R2 domain can't create users with email

I never created any users in ESM. I didn't know you could do that. Is the new "standard" way to create users? ESM seems to be EMC now. Did you mean EMC (Exchange Management Console)? The only thing that changes in ADUC is that the user now has an email address filled in. None of the...

Windows 2008 R2 domain can't create users with email

I was doing it from a workstation with Active Directory tools and Exchange tools installed. But then I tried it on the DC and on the Exchange Server with the same problem. I can go into Exchange Management Console and add a mailbox to a user after creation, but it's a little disconcerting that...

Windows 2008 R2 domain can't create users with email

I have a Windows 2008 R2 domain with an Exchange 2007 server. When I create users, I don't have the option to create a mailbox, and the users I create are not showing as having mailboxes in Exchange Management Console. Any help on how I can create users with mailboxes and how I can add...

Change default search in IE8 for new user

Yeah, it looks like I can use IEAK 8 to create a new installer with the customizations I want. I was hoping maybe there could just be an ini file I could edit or some registry changes. I guess I'll see how this IEAK 8 goes.

Change default search in IE8 for new user

Is there any way to set the default search provider to Google for new users. I know how to open IE8 and change the default search provider for the current user, but I want to make sure that any new users get google as the default search provider the first time they open IE8. In face I would be...

How are sysadmins dealing with the new volume license activation

We are still standardized on XP/2003, but we are now moving to the 2010 family of products. We have "KMS" keys for the latest versions, which I just figured was a new acronym replacing "VLK" and using it as such in my testing. Until the keys stopped working. So now I see you have to set up...

have ISC DHCP send multiple ddns hostnames

I only have 4 that are getting their ips from dhcp right now, but we have about 40 servers in total and many many more printers and other equipment that need static ips. I eventually plan to move all these to dhcp. We hardcode them now, but it is getting unweildy. I've never felt strongly...

have ISC DHCP send multiple ddns hostnames

I am managing all static ip addresses through our dhcp server, which is ISC DHCPd running on RHEL 5. I have static entries to assign addresses to our servers and then set the hostname on our dns server. This is working great, but I have one addition I would like to make. Sometimes we have...

Cisco switch turned off a couple ports and won't come back on

I fixed this. I should have updated this thread right away so I could have given a better description, but basically I had to enable auto-recovery for Channel-misconfig. After waiting for the default time period (5 minutes I think it was), all the ports came back on.

LVM snapshot merge has been needed for a long time, but I'm really excited about the Btrfs snapshot integration. I hope these features make it in to the next Ubuntu :D Sorry, I did try Fedora 13. I just don't like it. The theme, the menu layout, the lack of packages in the package manager...

Cisco switch turned off a couple ports and won't come back on

This is all the output from "show log", May 14th is when I killed the ports by setting up the bridge. I was plugged in to ports 8 and 18, then moved to 5 and 15. The etherchannel and vlans were already set up on these ( I don't know how) and I didn't change any config: Syslog logging...

Cisco switch turned off a couple ports and won't come back on

I haven't disabled BPDU guard (don't know how), but I have shut down the bridge (actually moved the firewall to different physical ports and disabled the bridge). I just want to get these ports back to how they were before.

by the way, the "show int status err-disabled" says: "channel-misconfig". I'm not sure if that is what you expected from being disabled by the bpduguard?

issue with Ubuntu 10.04 Server LTS with ecryption

Cisco switch turned off a couple ports and won't come back on

That's right. Although it is not exactly my choice to do it that way and I will agree it is a bit "stupid." Although I wouldn't put it that harshly. I inherited this configuration and I'm trying to replace a 10 year old SonicWall with pfSense. The bridged networks are the internet connection...

Cisco switch turned off a couple ports and won't come back on

I didn't bridge the same network. I bridged two separate vlans. There shouldn't be any other location where the vlans can talk to each other other than through the now-disabled bridge, so no loop was created. Unless I made a mistake in what I bridged, or there is a misconfiguration somewhere...

Ubuntu 10.04 Vs Centos 5 For java hosting

keep in mind Ubuntu has Tomcat 6 and CentOS has Tomcat 5. Tomcat 6 does boast some performance improvements, but the setup is a little different. You'll have to learn/get-used-to the new setup and you may need to do some tweaking on your application for it to run under Tomcat 6. Other than...

Cisco switch turned off a couple ports and won't come back on

We have a Cisco Catalyst 3560. I don't think this is a hardware problem. We have a few servers with two nics plugged in to this. Each pair is aggregated and set as vlan trunks. On one of these servers, we have a pfsense firewall. I bridged two vlans in the firewall and after a few...

This is to let you know that Ubuntu 10.04 has been released as Final. I also want to encourage you to download via torrent files. If I remember correctly, right after previous releases, it would take 24 hours to download directly from the heavily loaded Ubuntu mirrors, but you could get a...

Yeah, if he's looking to do development, that changes things. This is probably what I would say, but I don't really know much about being a developer. Just install Ubuntu and start coding. Installing Ubuntu and forcing yourself to use it exclusively would probably be pretty helpful here, too...

What can I do to become more proficient in Linux?

If these are server related positions, then build a server (without a gui) and, as said above, tinker with it. Set up a webserver and try pulling up the webpage from your desktop. set up a file server, mysql server, dns server, or dhcp server. I would say these are some of the most common...

redundant block device between 5 servers

Yeah, it looks like that may be the only simple solution until the next major version of drbd comes out (which supports multiple nodes, instead of just 2). The only other possibility would be to use a combination of gnbd, mdraid, and gfs, but I'm undecided if I want to go that route.
  38. B

redundant block device between 5 servers

oh, well, the purpose of this is too replicate data out to sites over relatively slow lines (like 10mbit), so they don't have to read from the main server. So that won't work.
  39. B

redundant block device between 5 servers

no, I actually just thought of that and was coming back to mention it. It does not have to be a block device. The important part is keeping the files in synch, but it needs to be immediate, preferably synchronous but I would settle for asynchronous. NFS mounts would be great, but then how...

redundant block device between 5 servers

I need to synch a block device between 5 servers. Only one server will write to the block device and the other three just need to read from it. If this was only between 2 servers, drbd would be perfect, but it's my understanding that drbd will only do 2 or 3 nodes, and I need it to do 5. The...
