  1. Time for a new smartphone [Android]

So my Verizon contract just ran out and I'm looking to replace my ultra-budget Galaxy S3 with something that isn't so sluggish. I know very little about my choices. I have a Project Fi Nexus 6P sitting next to me but I'm rethinking spending this much ($500) and have some second thoughts about...
  2. Old Timers ROLL CALL!

    Aww :(
  3. Gas chainsaw recommendations?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've already spoken to my buddy and he's fine with whatever I want to do. I've got high standards for when I borrow someone else's stuff, though, and insist on avoiding making this his problem in any way.
  4. Gas chainsaw recommendations?

I borrowed a friend's 14" Craftsman chainsaw and it was stolen while in my possession. Now I need to replace it with something as good or better. It was 10-15 years old, no idea of the model #. What's something comparable for a light duty homeowner saw? Any brands to totally avoid?
  5. Board games

I've been playing some simpler, co-op ones with my kids (6 & 10) - Forbidden Desert is our current favorite. I can't wait for the younger one to be old & mature enough to start taking on higher level rules and strategy.
  6. HTPC/HDMI trouble

I'll give different drivers a try. Already tried this - also already tried switching the receiver input away and back, no luck.
  7. HTPC/HDMI trouble

I'd hoped this was common enough a problem that there'd be a "click here, dumb ass" sort of simple answer. I also wasn't sure which tree to be barking up - the PC or the receiver/TV, so skipped most of the details. Based on this thread, seems like the problem's between the PC and receiver? PC...
  8. 1978 poll : When is rape OK?

They didn't, and it is semi-explained there. Whoever made the chart distorted (intentionally or unintentionally) the findings of the original study. From the site:
  9. HTPC/HDMI trouble

Frequently when waking from sleep, my PC will lose audio, giving me an error that it's detected a DVI to HDMI adapter. It's attached to a lower end Yamaha receiver, which is in turn attached to a Visio lcd. The issue will always happen if I wake the PC before the TV, but will sometimes still...

I can't wait for it to show up in my inbox... RE: RE: RE: FW: RE:**EXPOSED**

I'd be less concerned with aerodynamics than the apparently leaky hose/fitting/whatever and it's plume of whatever it's spraying. Presumably it's a gas/fluid that's important to the continued operation of the airplane.
  12. Adobe PDF Mass optimizer?

In Acrobat X: Action Wizard tab->Create new action->Document processing->reduce file size. In the dialog you'll have the option to run it on a folder of files.

Did anyone else notice that the music in the background is actually the Benny Hill theme? Fantastic.
  14. Party like it's 1990!

My first computer was a C64 with a cassette drive, hah. Eventually upgraded to dual cassettes, then to 2x floppy drives. My first modem was a 300 baud :) Good times.
  15. HVAC pros: recommend a programmable thermostat

I picked up a Honeywell from Costco over the weekend and was surprised by the "OT1" and "OT2" wires, which the install manual had no idea how to deal with. I want programmable because I'm gone 9-10 hours in the middle of the day and am too much of a space case to remember to set it on the way...
  16. HVAC pros: recommend a programmable thermostat

I've got a new (installed 2012) 2-stage heat pump controlled by a non-programmable thermostat and want a programmable one that's smart enough to deal with 2 stages efficiently. Current wiring suggests a Nest may not work (their compatibility checker had me email support) and it also seems like...
  17. Smart Home & Home Automation discussion thread

I'm thinking about a smarter thermostat and considering Nest and some other options. My concern is 98% economic and 2% convenience. I've got all new, relatively high efficiency mechanicals in an older but well-insulated (for it's age) home. There's currently a new basic, non-programmable...
  18. So Saints Row IV came out today. Anyone playing it?

I typically skip paying full price for games but SR3 was just amazing and the trailer for 4 looked really good. Played 3 or 4 hours last night with a buddy - the co-op is great. The intro was a little too long but once the world opens up, it's as fun or more fun than 3, which is saying something.
  19. should we end tipping?

Interesting that this would come up. I read Porter's series of blogs on the matter last week. He raises a number of good (but not faultless) points before devolving somewhere around blog entry 7 into 'tipping = misogyny'. I think his view is myopic at best - someone who's worked in the trenches...
  20. Ram sheep shows biker who's boss

Further proof that Benny Hill music makes everything better.
  21. poll for the lifers - How did you get your post count so high?

Exactly what I'd expect someone with your kind of post count to say. :colbert:
  22. About to go to a meeting in my bare feet

One girl here has huge bunny slippers she wears around the office from time to time. I prefer an environment that's focused on the work I'm doing instead of how I compare to this month's GQ.
  23. About to go to a meeting in my bare feet

It'd be just fine here. Hell, I feel overdressed when I'm wearing pants.
  24. Wow....knife sharpening

    Seems legit.
  25. Dropping cable...

I don't care at all about sports. I'm actually looking mostly for BBC news - though Top Gear, Dr. Who and others are as entertaining as TV gets for me.
  26. Dropping cable...

I'm looking to drop cable. I've got an antenna and a Roku along with Netflix and Prime. I'll be moving in the next few months and chances are relatively good that I'll start using my TV as main computer display (or may just build a lower power HTPC for it). I should get ABC/NBC/CBS/PBS ota. A...
  27. Ambassador Delenn was supposed to be a man.

This. Not on netflix either. I'm almost finished with DS9 and pondering what to do next.
  28. What size of shoe do you wear?

I have VERY wide feet. Voted 14 as that's the most common size that's fittable for me. When I can find extra wides, I can wear a 13.

  31. I don't get people who say stuff like this.

  32. Lifers: When did you stop looking at your post count?

These glamorous prizes make all the effort totally worthwhile.
  33. How does Direct Buy get people to sign up?

It's the high pressure thing. I was curious about it years ago and right off the bat, the pressure was high. They didn't want to meet with just me and wouldn't give me any detail about anything over the phone - they'd only meet with my wife present. I thought that was weird, but set up the...
  34. Lifers: When did you stop looking at your post count?

    Did I just win something?
  35. Flooring for a basement?

Concrete slab. Something durable and won't harbor mold should it ever get wet. I'd like something less cold/hard than tile. Inexpensive is important. I also don't want a 'hollow' sounding/feeling flooring like some of them are. Suggestions/experiences?
