Most Reliable 3Tb HDD for storage.

my seagate also died after about 2 years. i realize that this is a ridiculously small sample size and that other vendors can be just as bad, but ive just had some personal aversion against seagate because of it. data from the last years shows that hitachi drives are about 50% more likely to fail...

Now that the 520 is here.. which is the King of consumer SSDs? *Poll*

I really wish the M4 would be included in this poll. Not only is this one of the reliable drives, it would also be a good representative of the Marvel family. Also, it's SATA3, like the other two. Perhaps, also the Plextor M3S.

    No surprise there ( see http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?97048-Results-of-one-month-of-testing-13-Vertex-3-s-with-2.15-firmware ).

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

I have noticed that SSD's are more prone to failure as "on" time increases rather than data volume increases. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?271063-SSD-Write-Endurance-25nm-Vs-34nm Even the "unreliable drives" can pack a decent chuck of load. Compared to the common failures...

    Can't decide, 128gb Crucial M4 or Samsung 830

To summarize my recent conversation with my buddy: Chris has since updated to the second firmware and (after secure erase) observed similar heavy performance drops as well as high WA. This could be indicative of a larger problem. The M4 has not had that kind of degradation - after more...

    Can't decide, 128gb Crucial M4 or Samsung 830

My buddy from a different forum just sent me a message saying that the read/write speed of the Samsung 830 gets much worse over time. He sourced: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?271063-SSD-Write-Endurance-25nm-Vs-34nm/page138 New: Afterwards:

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

I wish there was a public Pareto chart of SSD failures. When the consensus is firmware is the leading root cause, is it because of compatibility issues? Why would so many SSD's suddenly die after, say, 150-1000 days if that were the case? Only the minority (i.e., enthusiasts) flash their...

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

Have you even read the last post? Who says I ignored them? I never made that claim. How is picking higher level of granulation wrong? If someone asks for why people sneeze and someone puts up a survey with choices: A cold, allergy, fever, dust. Then someone else complains, "well it's...

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

You have a point there, but I think your reaction is over-the-top. Regarding point 1: Yes, it's provocative it is but is it not true, based on the statistics? Just because it's provocative doesn't mean it's dumb or untrue. Regarding point 2: I have no evidence (I only know the stats from one...

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

It is good one one side to have a vendor that pushes forward, but it's again a tradeoff: Do I want to wait like the harpies or take risk. And it's good for everyone that OCZ takes the first bite. But wouldn't that have hurt ALL vendors and therefore increasing high RMA's across the board?

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

Guilty as charged. It's still your call - and therefore responsibility - to accept the controller or not. If Toyota comes out with a Camry 2013 that uses untested parts - it is Toyota's fault for using them . If another company, say Honda, offsets the launch of a new vehicle and loses...

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

I don't own shares/work for any competitor (or have any relatives that do) and I never owned an SSD by any manufacturer. AND I acknowledge the fact that OCZ has some of the fastest SSD's in the market, which is the main point of having these devices anyway.

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

Yes I am an SSD n00b and didn't know about firmware, but you have to start somewhere. A quantum mechanics professor answering a simplistic question of an interested student saying "Your question is dumb" is kind of a dick.

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

I'm saying that even though you don't take the complicated factors (compression, wear-control, error correction etc.) into account, you can shift responsibility to the board manufacturer for not pushing out correcting firmware soon enough, and shift responsibility to the controller manufacturer...
  17. H

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

Not really true when you can form an encoded regression model [Proportion of drives returned] = A*[Controller manufacturer] +B*[Board manufacturer] and explain >90% of the variation with this model alone at every RMA hub - which is most likely the case. I think it was a little caustic to...

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

Just came back and saw a lot of great responses. Thanks for all the info! I do have to admit blunder in the poll answer choices, because someone could say: "Well, firmware is linked to the specific board manufacturer and therefore he is at fault for not releasing a decent firmware soon enough."...

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

Doesnt firmware fall under the board manufacturer's realm? Or does the firmware only update the controller?
  20. H

SSD reliablity dependance on what main factor?

OCZ is known for their poor reliability: http://www.hardware.fr/articles/843-7/ssd.html Is this mainly because of: their reliance on Sandforce controller their potentially (!) poor manufacturing process (bad QA/sampling etc.) or the quality of the flash chips.

Making use of warranty vs. privacy

When SSD/HDD failures occur, aren't people afraid of making use of their warranty when their personal and financial information could be stored on the NAND-chips/sectors and still retrieved form the manufacturer (or enterprise server SSD's with confidential information)?

I have a 8800 Ultra 512MB and WinXp 32bit right now. If I get this card, can I address three different monitors (all with differing native resolutions) on Windows XP 32bit? I don't care much about playing games on three monitors simultaneously; I just want to make the jump from my current...

    New HDD and OS

    Which headset?

4GB shows up as 3.xGB in Win XP (32bit) task manager

I know this is a classic problem and I've researched it quite a bit online. The argument is made that the OS and the hardware needs some address space. When I had 2GB, however, all of it was displayed in physical memory! So, why does it eat away >.8GB when there are 4GB and (almost?) none...
