OK, as for the CPU usage, I have found what seems to be the problem. As this seems to be a common problem, I'm hoping someone will find this helpful. After watching the start up process, I realized explorer.exe was making it's jump to taking up 95+% of my CPU when the software for my HP...

Well, I got the sound working. That was such a simple solution, I'm embarassed to say what it was. I still can't account for the CPU usage though. I don't have any AVI files, don't have any graphic foo-foo on my desktop, no viruses and no RAID drives...yet explorer uses up 100% of the CPU...

Yeah, I've already disabled the onboard sound. According to the device manager the sound card is working great. I imagine there is a box that's unchecked somewhere. Just a matter of finding it. As far as the slowness goes, I'm finding that explorer.exe is using up 100% of my cpu resources...

Interestingly, for S#!ts and giggles I hooked up my 120gb as a slave... and the thing works fine, although the 40 and the 80 are about as dead as can be. I'm setting up to build a new machine in a few weeks whe I get the parts, maybe I'll try and get a new case for this one as well.

I don't know how to get it any cooler. I've got, 2 rear fans, 1 up front and the case is open with a 12 inch floor fan blowing into the case. All I can assume is there is a hardware screw up somewhere causing the temp to be so high. I'm buying a new machine in a month. I'm tired of screwing...

Chill out!

I have a weird issue that may just be a bad mobo. at start up both the CPU and system therms shows a cold start up temp of 102 f. This of course causes a problem of the machine shutting down when it allegedly reaches 158f. (not taking any chances. Is there any way to adjust the thermostat...

Reformatting

Thansk for the info, i actually found the info on an obscure knowledge base. It seems Win98Fdisk doesn't recognize HDD's past 67.7 gb, but will display only as 10 mb. You can either download the utility form Seagate or just type in the full size of the HDD.

OK, i fried my old mobo..it was a cheap Asrock, and replaced it with an equally cheap (but highly recommended) EPoX 8RD3AI. Knowing you should always start with a fresh drive, I put in a brand new Seagate 80gig. Ran Fdisk it, and when the dos partition comes up, it comes up as a 10 MEGABYTE...

WE$@$%@#!@#$#%!!!!!!! Ok, I hooked up the 40 gig slave, just for s#its and giggles. Upon start up, I lost recognizability to my zip and CD rom as well. I shut down, take the 40 gig off, reboot and now I get absolutely nothing. Me thinks it's time to go see a pro.

Windows Storage manager? INTERESTING! This is showing my lack of knowledge here, but I've never heard of it. How do I access it? on Win98SE? (dinosaur, I know) I had a 40 gig slave drive that worked fine for a few months, then simply quit and started showing up in the hardware but not in winderz.

yeah i've tried tossing the files I didn't need, and the disk came up invalid...musta tossed something I did need. I didn't think you could swap disks in the middle of a boot, especially when flashingh a bios. You sure? Maybe i've just never met anyone brave enough to try it.
