Thanks everyone! The switch is not managed. It's a 4-port Linksys. How do I go about to "sniff the wire"? I will try this. Can I use any IP on the machine I'm connecting?

Ok I have a little problem here. I accidentally logged out of a W2K machine, I have no idea what the admin pass is, and the machine is alone on a separate network that runs through the building (ip range unknown). I of course have physical access to everything, it's connected to a Linksys...

Yes, I have, also with a laptop. But only when using Linksys wifi connection program, not the XP built-in one.

I can't acess files across my network.

When you say you can't copy the files, what exactly are you trying to do that doesn't work? Can you see the computer on the network and you aren't allowed to write to the other computer or isn't it visible whatsoever?

What is the LEAST firepower you can afford to take down a full adult Grizzly Bear?

This I know! Use regedit and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion". Change the value for "ProgramFilesDir". PS Thanks dawks, you weren't too late ;) DS

Problems using FTP with Netgear WGT634U.*Solved!*

Well then I'm the idiot ;) Anyway, apparently after upgrading the firmware the router needs a complete factory reset. I did that and everything worked fine. A tip for you Netgear users out there.

Trying to connect an FTP server at another location. It logs on and I see the welcome message but when it tries to list the folders there is a connection timeout. The FTP is accessible from other locations so nothing is wrong with the server itself. Using FlashFXP, I have tried both...

Change default My Pictures?

Alot of image programs default to this folder when you choose to open a file. I refuse to use Windows folder standard and have to double click like 10 times to get where I have my picture library.

Communication problem between 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1

I would recommend not moving the wireless router because the signal would probably be poorer through the floor. Just pull a cable from the Netgear to the Linksys. Or is there any other reason why you have them on separate networks?

Can I connect a WiFi router to my regular router?

I have a 4 port USR router in the house. If I install a cable that goes out to the garage will I be able to connect a wireless router to it, or will just an AP suffice? I want to be able to use my laptop in the garage. Thanks! :)

Can Macrovision really do that?

Macrovision just "distorts" the projected image somewhat, actually making it difficult for some TVs and projectors etc to show a good picture. Or at least used to. You don't have to worry... ;-)

Can you set static IP address for your PC on a NAT/Cable/DSL router?

In addition to the subnet mask, make sure to set the gateway ip to your router to be able to get in the internet.

Then there obviously is something in your APs settings. Start with disabling all the security settings on the 614 and see if you can connect. Then go through enabling them one-by-one. Check the broadcast settings as well.

sorry, I'm an idiot... you mentioned the connection bars, that means linksys also have a some sort of program to control everything, try disable XP from doing it likekI wrote above. Worth a shot if you're going crazy..

Sometimes (usually) the Dlink Wireless Software "clashes" or whatever with XPs. Try and uncheck the box in the wireless network properties window that says "let XP configure my wireless something" so that the dlink software can control it alone.

Are all wireless routers equal? I love mine but I need more distance *UPDATE*

Like I said before, have a look at Lucent. The company I work for has sold numerous D-Links to customers and maybe 50% comes back with it because of distance/signal issues. I have yet to have a displeased customer with a Lucent.

Building new network in house, which cables?

I will be putting in cables in the walls of my house soon and I haven't decided which cables to use. We have the regular Cat5 cables, Cat5e and Cat6. I'm also planning on getting a Gbit switch soon, will it work with only the Cat6 cables or what, will cat6 cables work with the old 10/100 NICs...

Problem with PowerDVD playback with Radeon 9800Pro.

They only occur when playing DVDs in PowerDVD. DivX and XViD plays fine in Mediaplayer. It's a std Dell Dimension 2,8GHz, nothing is overclocked. I tried installing the latest Catalyst driver without change. I'm running PowerDVD XP (4.0?). Will try Ver. 5.0 and see what happens.
