Need some MySQL help: backup/restore

As you should be running your MySQL database on Linux.. There's really not much better for backups than Holland. http://hollandbackup.org/ Glorified cronjob with lots of config options. It'll run the mysqldump command for you, keep X amount of dumps in a folder.. etc.

Tall web form, lots of fields: keep keyboard-focused field vertically centered?

As long as you know functional programming and control structures I don't really see the need to learn JavaScript 'fully' before using jQuery. You may need to do things with the JavaScript classes, but that would be easily revealed in a documentation search.

How are all Mac houses run? What does the back-end consist of?

Mac mini as HTPC

The only problem that I had with Plex is that it would transcode, even with Gbit Ethernet direct connected. Kind of dumb to waste the CPU Cycles.

Dual SSD+HDD setup in MBP

You need to make sure that the internal shock sensor works on the HDD, to stop head travel. If not, the HDD should be moved back to its original place. I'm not sure if the new MBPs have this for both, but I remember seeing an article where it was only present on the original position.

I need to distribute an image to 60 iMac lab computers... best way to do this is...?

Without OSX Server, not much of a centralized way to do this. You can install OSX on a FW800 drive (Not USB). Then you can copy your image file into the desktop/whereever of that OSX install. On iMac: Plug in FWDrive. Hold Option (on startup, before Apple logo) to boot from it. Use Disk...

Why do iphone users use the crappy earbuds?

I use them at work, the only time I really play music through the iPhone: 1. They were free 2. They are open air so I can still hear if someone walks into the office or needs my attention (phone rings) 3. You can't really find much better (with included mic) for under $50

Mountain Lion: Apple to Bring iPhone, iPad Features to Mac

Mountain Lion is great so far, honestly its just Lion with a few tweaks. Notes is nice to have as a standalone app -- using Notes in Mail is kind of weird. Reminders, just like iOS. Just a desktop app. But in all honesty-- I use evernote for taking notes and reminders/todo lists.. Its going...

Owning two (or more) iMac's

You should be able to have 5 iTunes authorized machines and .. I believe up to 10? App Store authorized machines, all under the same iTunes account. The thing you really can't do, is sync an iOS device to multiple computers.

Mac Pro and video cards...

I still don't think this generation's going to be an off the shelf card.. because of thunderbolt. I'm going to go out on a limb and say 3 thunderbolt ports per card .. making 6 displays/card... But they could be the same cards for PC.. I was also thinking about if AMD/ATi would use the PCI...

Help making my iMac ultimate media server

Just as a warning if you use Lion with XBMC on AppleTV2 it will not work with Samba (SMB). You need to setup NFS, build your own Samba via homebrew or install an XBMC Nightly for AFP (somewhat busted, crashy).

best hacktintosh laptop - hands down - not mini

In laptop form factor the best option is the real thing. There are too many variables that you cannot control. You're going to want a real MBP in the first place.. Why spend the money twice? The MBP will easily run Win7 via BootCamp.

Multiple iPhones - how many Apple IDs?

+1. Two iPhones, done exactly this way. You can setup your phone with the new Apple ID. Then go to (Settings->Store) and change it to your old one with your iTunes store stuff. There is also a separate account setting for iCloud (Settings>iCloud).

iOS 5 is live

I really like the fact that on my iPhone.. if a contact has an AppleID it flips to iMessage instead of hitting AT&T's network... as iMessage will show the other person typing. Hourly weather is pretty slick, too.

Cheapest way to hookup a 3rd monitor to my Hackintosh?

Eyefinity is not on OS X. But any card that says supporting Eyefinity that is also Hack supported will probably enable you to have 3 active video outs. I'm currently using 2x nv 9600GSO for 2xU2410 and 1x20".. But you don't have an other PCIe slot ;( Looking for an upgrade soon probably 6xxx...

Creating a portfolio type page for myself. Any advice on the layout and colors?

For me the google docs viewer opens but doesn't display the resume. (Not important). But what is important about that is.. you obviously have some understanding of HTML and your resume layout isn't difficult to put into HTML. Do It. I think Gdocs will even export as HTML for you..

How long will my MBP last?

It all really depends on how much drive space is required. I only really use a max of ~30Gb on my main OS drive, so the SSD for me would be ~$100.

Is it possible to extend my desktop using AirPlay?

Synergy doesn't work like that.. You would need something like Screen Recycler or whatever.. MaxiVista is for Windows. You would also need a full system setup on the TV in the first place ( for Synergy, and other solution ).

Depends on the sizes of files, Fat32, but you cannot have files >4Gb.

Just bought a new iMac (First Mac)

I went from a Dual G5 PowerMac to the 27" iMac (first edition) at work and everything became eerily quiet, I could now hear my backup drive spin-up for Time Machine to fire off a backup. If you push it hard enough the fan inside will kick on but even then the ambient noise is so low.

Lion with Dual Monitors

AFAIK, if you're developing it yourself, all you need to have is a Mac capable of running 10.7 Lion (XCode 4), and pay $100/yr developer license. Apple takes 30% of what your app sells for (Apple Tax).

If you wanted to go the rails route I think DreamHost would cover you. http://rails.dreamhosters.com/ What you're asking to do .. in rails would probably be two or three commands and then some HTML/CSSing to get that result.

You're still probably looking at ~$100 3G upgrade, because it will use the SAME board/chipset. You'd also get GPS from the chip.
