1. Goto Bios Set it to boot from Maxtor. Install Linux as usual (it will install it on Maxtor). You can switch between Linux and Windows from bios now (which I think is inpractical - but your choice). Or 2. you can simply install Linux on Maxtor. It will try write MBR to WD. Tell it not to do...

Has anyone in here actually used Xandros?

Basic version will not have CodeWeavers Crossover Office ($55 alone) and CrossOver Plugin, so he won't be able to run windows progs. Deluxe version is a very nice windows desktop replacement. Servers should never run windows in the first place.

What Linux OS should I use on my desktop?--with POLL

Try any other Debian distro. Try http://www.xandros.com - it is debian based (you can install from debian sources), easy to install, has new kernel (2.4.19) and can run windows programs (like MS Office or Quicktime). Perfect windows replacement.

Best Linux distro for a server?

Try Xandros. It is commercially supported distro based on Debian. It has 2.4.19 kernel and latest drivers in it. And you can apt-get from debian and xandros :)

384kb cache on Athlons?

Keep in mind, than Athlon's cache design is different from Intel. Athlon's CPU have data in 1 cache only (L1 or L2) - no duplicates. So AMD cpu's cache 384kb of unique data. Intel's CPUs (IMHO) duplicate data from L2 into L1, so at any given time data from L1 is stored in L2. So Intel's CPU's...

Best version of Linux for n00bs?

Xandros from http://www.xandros.com. It is very stable (based on Debian - you can install debian packages), easy to install, can run Windows programs (hey - put MS Office CD inside and install it) and works great. I tried a lot of distros, but Xandors is the best by far.

Linux and Raid???

I have reiserfs (-notail option for / partition as recommended) on all my partitons and I run 2.4.18 kernel. Works fine (great?), but you guys left me worried. Perhaps I should do more research and do some heavy tests.

Mandrake Linux 8.1 Boot Problem

Please tell me if this would work

I installed linux on computer of my friend a few days ago and he had 6 harddrives running in a Raid5 with NTFS (>300GB of data). Linux picked it up withough any problems. Check if your raid controller is supported under Linux. Make sure you install one of the newer distroes.
