Is text good on a 22inch widescreen ?

dpi calculator: http://www.raydreams.com/prog/dpi.aspx The lower the number, the better the text readability. 22" WS are all 90 dpi, 19" non-WS are even better at 86.3 dpi.

What do you mean? Maybe you should install cat 8.3 like you have been told twice in this thread and then tell us about your games.

How do i downscale resolutions on a LCD without having then strechted?

Why would anything get stretched when switching from a 16:10 res to another 16:10 res? Anyway, get cat 8.3 for the new settings and also check if your monitor menu has any settings to control AR.

    HD 1080p Playback

I agree that there is no point at all of partial decode for AVC but for VC-1 this isn't the case. Without partial dxva the microsoft decoder can't play HD DVD VC-1 smoothly even on a 2.8 GHz AMD X2. Cyberlink can but it won't work outside of PDVD (I tried the linked version but it didn't change...

    HD 1080p Playback

There's no such thing as purevideo drivers. What you are talking about is the nvidia mpeg-2 decoder. It's not bad but the cyberlink on is better for TV streams. And it won't help for VC-1 or AVC. One reason people say ATI is better is because nvidia doesn't support full VC-1 decode (only part...

It's not about resolution, it's about codec and bitrate. You have to make sure you use the right software for the right video. short overview AVC/h264: best software decoder is CoreAVC, best hardware decoder is Cyberlink (only newest generation cards support this, and many pirated videos...

is there any loss when converting a HD movie?

    1) download pirated, downscaled, low bitrate version of high quality movie 2) reencode it to an even lower bitrate 3) ... 4) profit! Seriously, a DVD would look much better. And I mean a real DVD, not some Xvid crap.

    Hardware Decoding w/ .MKV file

In general I agree. But if you look at real industry standards and see how they're going then you can't really say they're doing much better. Avsforums is still full of endless threads about problems with Blu-Ray playback. Nvidia and ATI are still bringing out drivers with broken dxva...

    Catalyst 8.3 Preview

LOL that site doesn't have a clue what they're talking about do they: Current drivers already use the GPU to do the scaling. What's new is that you can now choose whether you want the GPU or the LCD to do the scaling. And the new aspect option is to maintain the AR of the original image...

So what would I need for a blu-ray to play full 1080p on comp?

You're good for CPU decoding, wrong card for GPU decoding. This means good for progressive content and bad for interlaced content, as you need GPU decoding to get GPU deinterlacing. And there are no "Vista DRM issues", that was just a load of FUD from people who don't understand what HDCP is.

HTPC what CPU do I need

It seems fine? "...there were certain action sequences that created a 100% CPU usage rate that resulted in the movie stopping or PowerDVD locking up." The thing is there many different kinds of video out there today, it's no longer all MPEG-2 and xvid. I'd summarize HD content as Blu-Ray...

HTPC what CPU do I need

Looks like it can only do MPEG-2. Are you sure that's what you want? And "MPEG-4 simple profile" can't be right, they probably mean that silly "AVC dxva with cheating on deblocking and more CPU usage than CoreAVC" mode.

    HP W2207 Comments Wanted

If your focus is on working then don't get it. It's glossy, which can be stressful depending on lighting, and you can't use cleartype because the fonts go all funky and colorful. It's nice for gaming and movies though, great colours as long as you're looking at it from a straight angle, and I...

    Does CPU temp really matter

It's extremely unlikely that your CPU will die before you stop using it anyway. Other components on the Mainboard are bound to die much earlier. Yes, the higher temp will shorten the life. But I don't think you're planning to use the same CPU in 2020 are you? The simplest rule is that if it's...

    Interlacing Detection

I've never seen any interlaced avi anywhere. The stuff you get on torrents is always deinterlaced by the guy who encoded it. The true interlaced sources are DVD and digital TV which are all MPEG-2. Good players are Zoom Player and Media Player Classic. A good site to read up on interlacing is...

    Interlacing Detection

That's why VLC is no good for interlaced content. Use a proper player with the Cyberlink MPEG-2 decoder and you will get autodetection plus hardware deinterlacing. Other than that your eyes are the best way to detect interlacing. Bob is what you should use for true interlaced content but the...

Well, I called it wrong... I guess the "gimmick" is here to stay

I think Dual Core CPUs are quite a different concept to SLI. With CPUs it's like this: 1) Constant improvements in chip manufacturing mean the number of transistors that can be put together at a decent price and decent size is always increasing. 2) These new transistors used to improved...

How to achieve super fast load times?

You'd have to be more specific about what you're doing exactly but I'm quite sure that CPU power will help you a lot more than all RAID and RAM recommendations people are giving here. Or to be more precise: encoding speed is completely a CPU thing and loading speed depends on what type of file...

Where do you draw the line for temps?

A question I've never seen asked or answered: why don't AMD tell us what the max Tjunction for their chips is? On my Toledo looking at case temps is useless because they were obviously never calibrated (difference of 15°C between cores) and looking at core temp is useless because nobody knows...

Cooking eggs on a passive 8800GT!!

9800 PRO HDCP? Blue Ray 1080P compatible?

Before you dive in to the HD disk world make sure you check the long ass threads at avsforums so that you know what you're in for. Chip-shrinking may be nearing its limits

Yeah, I understand that Moore's law isn't a law of physics in itself. But what I was getting at is what the physical/engineering reason is that computer chips are able to develop at such a pace. Put another way: Why can a chip designer say "in two years we will give you a chip that is about...

Chip-shrinking may be nearing its limits

What I've never understood is what is the underlying fundamental physical/engineering reason for Moore's law? It's always stated as if it were a real law and not just a statistical observation. But why is it that chip performance increases much much faster than any other technology out there, be...

Yeah, I agree that it's hot, I just sometimes get annoyed with everyone shouting "OMG t3h hotz0r" instead of believing what the bloody manufacturer specs. With GPUs it's gone so far that people are complaining that their fans are too quiet and go looking for ways to make them noisier. Just...

    E6750 as high as 179°C!

72° is max Tcase not max Tjunction. Core Temp tells you Tjunction. Throttling starts at 95°C Tjunction (I think). There's a reason Intel set it to do that: because below that there is not a problem, which is why I said 89°C is fine. EDIT: I just saw he also read the BIOS temps (Tcase) which...
