man oh man...here i come apple!!!

I would have liked to get a mac, especially the new dual ones they have with the aluminium cases with the cinema display, those are nice. But too much money that I don't have :) Anyways, why not look into open source alternative for software for the mac? I know some things are being ported...

How long do you keep your desktop on??

24/7 except for during very severe thunderstorms. The main movable part that would be affected is the harddrive. Considering how cheap hd's are available for currently, I don't see how that is a big problem. I just backup regularly.

    Building My First Computer

As for sound, I use on board sound and it works fine for my gaming/music/movie needs. Only time I would recommend a seperate sound card would be for: 1. Compatibility issues (eg: the onboard sound doesn't work in Linux). 2. Surround (if not supported onboard). 3. Distortion/hissing from onboard...

    wireless connection question "how-to?"

I'm a little confused, you seem to have wireless already setup, so what do you mean by getting wireless internet shortly? Plus, give the models of the routers you will be using.

I will side with bob4432 on this, no need to get a sound card if the motherboard comes with sound.

can someone help me configure a router to allow a remote desktop connection

That I can't tell you, never tried running VNC, but port forwarding would be my first guess. The manual should provide you with a starting point on setting up port forwarding: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/rp614v2_reference_manual.pdf

Planning on upgrading with around $365...

If you get A64 you won't have enough left over for ram. (I'm guessing you'll need 1gb min. for Doom) I say get a mobile barton and OC it, also get another 512 in ram.

can someone help me configure a router to allow a remote desktop connection

How about model of the router? You will need to setup port forwarding. EDIT: This belongs in the Networking forum.

    SEAGATE! AARRRRRAAGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!

In my experience, the 2 things that fail first in a computer are the Harddrive and the Monitor. I've had numerous problems with hd's and monitors, most everything else works fine (with the exception of one cdrom).

Raid is going to have very negligible affect on gaming performance unless you plan to have hundreds of games and/or programs. Not sure why some are pushing raid. Plus, Maximum PC is not an authority or "most influential magazine" by even a long shot. SCSI is nice for the speed, but there is the...

[Modified] The feeling after using Firebox and Thunderbird (1+)

Let me ask you this then, since the code of Windows is closed (no one is allowed to see it) then why is it that there are so many exploits for IE, while very few for Mozilla? Based on the theory that Mozilla is open source, anyone can find a fault, shouldn't Mozilla be one of the most insecure...

[Modified] The feeling after using Firebox and Thunderbird (1+)

Open source is not a security concern. As soon as an exploit/hole/vulnerability is discovered in the code someone points it out and a fix is produced faster than you care to patch all your apps. If you will use the argument now that someone might find a vulnerability and not tell anyone, well...

    PC for friend.

IBM has a problem with certain models of their drives for a while, but it wasn't the case all through out. People still bought IBM drives and were happy with them. Hitachi is good in their drives.

Legally speaking, the Windows copy that came with the Dell dies with the Dell. Then again, that is what MS wants you to do, I personally feel different, if I paid for it, I'll use it on whatever comp I want. :)

    Copy a hard drike?

There are software that will allow you to make a mirror image of the hard drive and its data that you can recover to another hd. One that I have used is Acronis True Image, but I only used it to recover to the same hd, should work fine for what you're doing, though you may want to partition the...

A P4 2.8ghz machine, with 40gb hd, sound, lan, cdrom, floppy, case, psu, simple (but good) video, and 128mb ddr ram for $275 is not good value? (~$75 more and I could have a kick ass linux desktop :) ) Most people on these forums have some computer knowledge and know how to get the best bang for...

    using Network Stumbler

I had a similar problem in my wireless AP. It turned out that even though I had broadcast of the SSID disabled, the fact that it was still stored in the router, it was being broadcast. I went into the router and deleted the SSID and left that space blank. Broadcasting SSID doesn't help prevent...

    Will Anantech support IPv6?

What benefit will you personally get out of IPv6? I know all about what ICANN is doing, I know that China, Japan, the DOD are pushing for it to be implemented, and also am aware of colleges. But what do you get out of it? Plus, if the home user has to spend money to get a new router/NIC (my...

    Most UNsatisfying HW purchase ??

I have a few. 1. Keyboard for $10 (I had needed one as I shorted my original one due to water). Generic POS, the keys started rubbing off within a month, and it was rough to the touch, got on my nerves. 2. CDROM for $20 (to replace an old slow one). Lousy thing died in 2 months, it was some...

When someone asks me something along the same lines, I tell them that I could build it with good parts that will give them what they want, in their budget, and if they ever need to upgrade the hardware will allow it with ease. But, if they don't know much about computers, and would call me as...

    Will Anantech support IPv6?

Need 19" monitor that can do 1600x1200 at 85hz any suggestions?

I believe you will have to look at a 21" monitor to get that kind of a refresh rate on that resolution. As for brands to look at: Viewsonic, Mitsubishi, NEC, iyama (I would say Sony as a first choice but not sure if they're still making 21" CRT's).

    Dell Specs

If all you're looking to do is upgrade the video, why not look into just getting a PCI video card? Chances are that will be cheaper than buying a new MB, and case/psu. I don't know for sure but I've heard their power supplies and cases are custom built.

configured my new rig... any opinions?

I use both, standard and natural. Once you use a natural keyboard, you don't want to go back. The comfort they provide when you type is worth the extra money in my opinion. But then again, I'm the kind of guy who spends extra on the type of keyboard, mouse, and monitor I use. I just feel these 3...
