isolating work laptop at home/chaining firewalls

i was setting the gateway and the dns IPs in the 2nd firewall as the IP of the 1st firewall. the provider's gateway & dns IPs worked like a champ in the 2nd. the obvious answer was right in front of me, shouldn't have tried to make it so complex!

physical computer security

what do you do at home to physically secure your computers if your home should be broken into? I was thinking to place them in a sturdy wood or metal cabinet (6ft tall) and placing a sturdy lock on it. need some vent holes.

how to remove thermal paste?

have an old duron cpu from a pal, top of the core is clean but the sides of it have lots of old thermal paste and it is rock hard. how do i remove it? repeated attempts with isoprop alcohol? should i just ignore it, slap on some paste on top of the core, and call it a day?

here is an update: i have another system based on the kt7 that is fine. took the ram from that system & put it in the bad one. it still froze. took the network card from good system, put it in bad system. still froze. replaced the network cable to the bad computer & it did not...

ok, i yanked the sound card. the video card is pci. still crashed while copying over files. I notice it is always around 2gb of data.

computer keeps freezing up

I popped in an antec sl350, system still froze in win2k. no heavy i/o activity, I just let the system sit idle. all the caps on the abit board are fine. i had the abit cpu temp program running, when it froze the cpu temp was 33C and the case temp was 30C.

seems whenever i do heavy io (like transfering files on my lan) my computer freezes. this has happen in both win2k and rh9. It is hard to replicate this issue because sometimes it is fine. system also locks up randomly, say if it has been idle for long. I thought it migh be cheapo fry's ram...

what is your system backup strategy?

when i said 'it needs to be in dos, very manual', i was refering to ghost. I am actually looking for a strategy that once you set up is automatic. when you say ntbackup, do you mean what is native in win2k - programs-->accessories --> systems tools --> backup?

cpu-z says the cpu is stepping 0, revision A0. does that mean it is a T'Bred A? tried 8.5x166 and it boots win2k fine @ 35.5C idle. so 1.75V is safe?

win2k shutsdown during boot

Thermaltake Volcano 12 problem

it turned out to be a bad variable knob. when i switched to the rear slot knob from the 3.5 front, the problem vanished. i think win2k rebooting on install was caused by cpu protection in the bios. turned that off & it went away as well. should turn it back on now since os is installed, ya hear?
