Vertex plus for Z68 SSD cache?

Newegg has a 60GB OCZ Vertex Plus for $50 after MIR right now. Is this drive ok for a SSD cache on a Z68 mobo? I know it's older, and I poked around at some reviews (including Anand's), but wanted to see what you guys thought. Thanks for the help.

Recommend for me a single-player FPS

They're certainly older than "the last few years" but the Max Payne games are great for single player, though 3rd person not 1st. Certainly would run fine on your GPU.

Contractor or civilian? As a contractor you're right, since they aren't paid out of appropriation directly, but as a civilian you'd only be mostly right. Civilian "critical" personnel are going to be like the military, working but not paid on time. You'll have to get it retroactively. Better...

The "they" you speak of aren't the ones shutting down. Congress will still be plugging away, earning their paychecks. It's the actual workers that are going to be staying home. Why does no one feel bad for the government workers that work paycheck to paycheck and are getting laid off...

Disclaimer: I haven't played this game. However, an observation: If your home country is occupied, and you're part of a small resistance cell trying to fight guerrilla warfare against them, covert ops behind enemy lines with no support sounds like the ONLY mission type you'd ever be going on...

New build is this nuts?

850 is still overkill for CF 6970s, IMO. I wouldn't go above 750. Those cards are very efficient, and unless you're going to overvolt them, I don't see how you'd use that much power.

My PC went bang...whilst turned off :(

Speaking from experience, a computer will still boot if caps on your video card pop, but it won't stay up for long. Check the mobo and video card first since you can do that easily.

Somewhat off-topic, but a question for those that have pre-ordered the two pack. The single game pre-order on Steam comes with a free copy of Portal 1. Did you get a copy of Portal 1 with the two-pack pre-order? Just curious.

What have I missed? 2006-2010

Off your list, Batman Arkham Asylum and KotOR 1 are must-play games. KotOR is going to show it's age, but the story and gameplay will make up for it. KotOR 2 was ok, but I couldn't get into it as much.

Any games in the horizon that will prompt you to upgrade?

If your system is a little dated than there could be plenty of games that would require an upgrade in the near future, but the next game I see being released that is going to make EVERYONE want to upgrade is Rage in September 2011. Given id's track record, I'd be disappointed if it didn't.

Got my Evo in December. Played with both and liked the touchscreen keyboard enough to not miss a physical one. Larger screen, better ROMs, and better manufacturer support were my other reasons.

Torchlight 2 Elder Scrolls 5 SW:TOR Deus Ex: Human Revolution Crysis 2 Rage Mass Effect 3 FEAR 3 Batman Arkham City I'd say Diablo 3 but I don't think there's anyway that's coming out in 2011. This is going to be an expensive year as it is, lol.

I planned to buy a 6970 if the performance had been closer to a 580, but decided to get a second 5850 instead, seeing as they've got some decent deals on them right now. I did end up buying a 6850 for a second computer, so I guess I am participating in this generation, just not how I anticipated.

Building an exclusive SC2 pc

Alternatives to an SLR?

What card to buy?

Any of the cards you mention should be fine for your purposes. Crysis 2 will be the most demanding game out of what you've indicated you want to play, and you probably wouldn't want to go below 6870 for that game. If the 6950 is less than $350 though, I'd go with that.

Just bought my first DSLR, EOS 450D, Good choice?

I bought a 450D for my first DSLR a few months after it was released. It's suited me pretty well, but I'm running into it's limitations. Learn how to shoot manual mode with confidence and you'll eventually figure out what types of lenses you want to buy to shoot the kinds of pictures you like...

Boycotting XFX - Bad Capacitors, bad service

There's a small card that comes in the box that has your video card's serial number on it. It says right on that card to go register on their website to receive the lifetime warranty. Took me all of 5 minutes when I got my 5850. I made sure to do this because I, too, had a 8600 GT blow a cap...

gtx570 pictured; near-GTX480 specs

To be fair, NV didn't pull out a brand new architecture, or even modify the existing architecture. They fixed the architecture they had out to begin with. The 580 isn't Fermi 2, it's Fermi 1 with all the bugs fixed. That makes it a lot easier to turn a "new" product out. I imagine if AMD...
