Begining my hunt for a laptop for college.

A IBM Thinkpad T42 2373-M3U is the perfect college notebook in my opinion. its only about $1800 with an edu discount and you get a P-M 745 1.8ghz, 512mb, 60gb 7200rpm hd, SXGA+ 14.1in screen, 64mb ATI Mobility 9600, bluetooth, combo drive and a 3 year warranty

Latitude 110L

the Celeron-M's don't have speedstep like the Pentium-M's do. So they run at full power while the P-M's can either run at low power or adaptive.

Can this laptop accept a 2.0 Dothan?

no, the CPU in that computer is a P4-M, not a P-M like the Dothan. The socket has 478pins while the newer Dothans have 479pins and are not electrically compatible. I think thats the best that laptop will do.

IBM dead pixel hell

bill from thinkpads.com will cherry pick a dead-pixel thinkpad for you for $100. He has really good prices on his thinkpads so it might be almost as cheap to buy it from him, although I don't know exactly how nice your university deal is.

Help buying notebook

A IBM Thinkpad T42 2373-DXU sounds like it suits your needs. Just up the ram to 1gb and it meets every requirement but the firewire and you'll have a badass comp. Add in the firecard and maybe a Audigy 2 ZS Notebook and you'll have one sexy laptop. IBM's are renoun for their built quality and...

make sure ya get a 14in model. My 15in SXGA+ T42 gets about an hour less of battery life than a standard 14in

no, i but i think the thermal output on te A64 would be so much greater than the Sempron, so you'd have a much hotter laptop with much poorer battery life

Dude you can get that laptop for a lot cheaper. Its just a rebadged Compal CL56, which you can customize for a lot cheaper on discountlaptops.com , powernotbooks.com , tigerdirect.com , mwave.com and so on. Unless you really need the flashy paint job, name and perfect pixel guarantee, save a few...

Mobile 9600 with Omega Drivers

by default the official ATI catalyst drivers don't support the mobility radeons. You either have to run them through the mobility modder (google it) or use the Omega 4.11's

impossible, not only do IBM's not have removable graphics, the T series couldn't handle a 9800 anyway for size/power reasons.

anyone think dell are shipping laptops an pcs with too much cr@p on them?

IBM is bloated out the ass, i had 50+ processes when i first got it. But the thing is that most of those processes are extremely useful. I kept a little more than half of them and had about 35+ processes before I started installing my own stuff. Crap like the blue access IBM button i ditched...

Upgrading Celeron to P3?

check the pins, cuz the P3's had a whole lot of different pin packages. Also check on the thermal output of the P3 vs the celeron to see if it would overheat

Dell Warranty Voidance Question

if it wasn't included but it was on the invoice why don't you call them and tell em to ship you it? also I believe if the ram slots and mini-pci slot are user accessible (ie not under the keyboard or anything like that) then the upgrades shouldn't void the warranty

laptop palm rests

I remember reading about sites where you could by plastic cover looking things for the palm rests of your laptop so that the palm rests don't wear out and fade. I noticed the palm rests on my T42 that I've been using heavily for about 2months starting to fade and I don't wanna have to change out...

ATI 9600 vs nvidia GeForce 4 440 Go

How the hell is the P-M 1.8ghz 25% slower than the P-M 1.7? Besides the 100mhz advantage, the P-M 1.8 has the Dothan core which has double the L2 cache of the Banias core P-M 1.7

Thinking of getting this for my trip

it might be almost as good battery wise if its the 2200+ 25w mobile cpu, but if its the 35w 2200+ then its not gonna nearly the battery life a dothan would. A Banias-core P-M is 24.5w I think and a Dothan-core is 21w.

UXGA or SXGA?

i think SXGA on a 15in screen is pretty small to begin with, but UXGA must be tiny. That being said I love the flexview on my 15in SXGA T42

adding bluetooth to T42

according to this page my laptop (2373-DD3) doesn't have a bluetooth antenna and the bluetooth modem card is $67.50 and the new clear plate is $12.50, but it still doesn't answer my question if I can do it myself or not. I'm assuming I'd have to send it back so they could install a bluetooth...

adding bluetooth to T42

My laptop bought through Duke didn't come with Bluetooth standard and that is a feature that I would like in the future. Is it possible to add the bluetooth cdc or whatever to the laptop myself or would i have ot send it back or what? Just wondering cuz I was thinking about using a vision...

Ati mobility 9600 128Mb vs 9700 64Mb

i figure the 128mb 9600 would be better cuz it could hold more textures with out going to main system memory (ie higher possible resolutions). plus you could OC it to 9700 speeds cuz the 9700 is just an OCed 9600

maybe its that XP home always comes preloaded on cheap computers with other bloatware that messes up the system. a clean XP home system shouldn't be any difference gaming wise than xp pro

Laptop advice...

I'd recommend getting a Latitude over an Inspiron, they're just better build quality for pretty much the same price. That being said I love my T42

the 14in IBM Thinkpad T42 is 4.9lb and is just badass. I've handled 600m's, D600's and the 14in T42 and i'd take the T42 in a heartbeart

Why Dell sucks.

I used to work in a hospital computer IT department and the first thing we did with the new computers were to load images onto the computers that had all the crap taken out and all the network stuff installed. It was a very efficient system. I formatted my friends Dell D600 with XP Pro over Home...

Best Laptop in 4 - 4.5 lbs range

I agree, IBM is the way to go if you got that much. I got a 1.8ghz, 512mb, 5400rpm 80gig, 15in T42 for $2269 (fatty education discount) and upgraded through a frys deal (Kingston PC2700 512mb for $69.99+ tax after MIR) Its a badass system

Got barebones system from Tigerdirect....

yea 133 is the right fsb. if you talkin about running at the 266fsb then its just (133 double pumped = 266). So 133 is the actual fsb but 266 is the effective fsb.

eMachines M6805 problems with Win XP Sp2

why is it such a big deal, if you already have it downloaded it can't hurt. The service pack wizard takes an inventory of everything on the computer and analyzes what it needs to install. It doesn't install any unnecessary stuff
