1.65v modules too much for P55? 1156/i7, i5

If you're not overclocking, there's no point in 1600Mhz ram, 1333Mhz is default. 1600Mhz ram will run at 1333 unless you overclock or change bclk and memory dividers.

AHCI Driver install question

Just slap the drivers onto a USB and stick it in and load the drivers when appropriate in the win7 install. If they're just standard sata drives then Win7 should have them already and see your disks without needing to load sata drivers (I think).

Installing XP with x-25Mg2 on P6T Deluxe

You will need to have the appropriate drivers (ie intel storage matrix for Win XP) and have them loaded on a floppy or usb like you would for installing a raid setup etc.

Anyone do an Intel X25-M & win 7

The Intel 80GB drive has 74.4GB formatted in Windows 7. Windows 7 itself will take about 10-15GB generally. My Windows 7 x64 with Office is about 15.5GB (+ a couple of apps and a game which comes to around an extra 3GB), so you should be safe with the 80GB drive.

New X25-M G2 - Install and use or wait until firmware?

Not using TRIM will not physically damage/permanently degrade the performance of the drive. As the little thingies get written too, there is less space for the drive to move stuff to save more stuff (something to do with being able to write small amounts, but has to delete large amounts before...

Or wait untill Intel figures out its loader problem for its firmware and run their SSD Toolbox kit (OS independent), similar to the OCZ wiper tool. It can be run as a scheduled task. You will just need to make sure disk defrag etc is disabled. Windows 7 does all this automatically when it...

1156 i5 750 value board recommendation

Hey I just got the Asus P7P55D board (not LE) from Computer Lounge. They have the whole i5/4GB DDR3 1600 Cl9 SuperTalent Ram/Asus p7P55D combo for $719 at the moment (if you haven't already got the stuff!). I don't know if you know but a more NZ specific forum is gpforum. Overclocking it...

Well I'm using Kingston Value Ram. Anand has a value ram overclocking comparison on Core 2 Duo which shows that all of them reach 400Mhz DDR2-800 which would give you 2.8Ghz. Prices in that article will be out of date now though. So value ram would most likely get you to around 2.8Ghz or more...

Well the stock speed for the ram is 333mhz DDR2-667, so 1:1 with FSB you would get 7x333 or 2.33Ghz. So that is without overclocking the ram. How far your ram can go I don't know, but most will get to at least 400mhz DDR2-800 or more, so you would be looking at 2.8Ghz. So really you would be...

At 2.5-2.8Ghz, stock cooling should be fine. I'm at 3.15Ghz with stock cooling and not worried about the heat (~55-60C under load using core temp). I might suggest undervolting though to keep the temps down like I have, and set the fan speed to max (~2200rpm) to keep it cool. If, under load...

Calling all overclockers -- E6400 vs E6600

I've got Kingston DDR2-667 RAM and I've got it up to DDR2-940 5-5-5-15 2.1v, currently at DDR2-920 4-5-4-12 2.1v (or 2.2 can't remember ;)) You won't need to buy that G-Skill RAM to get a good o/c from the E6400! I mean you should be able to reach DDR2-900 and get 3.6Ghz just like everyone else :)

I HAD no idea how to overclock my E6400 - but now I do!

In the BIOS main screen hit ctrl+F1, this will bring up 'advanced' options. In the MIB tweaker section, set the memory multi to 2.0 to start off with and try setting FSB at 400. Automatically your ram will be running at DDR2-800 (400Mhz), which will be stock for your ram. Most likely you won't...

what you all upgrading to when Vista comes?

Windows Vista isn't *that* much of a RAM hog. I just helped my mate install Vista RC1 on his laptop - a mighty 1.8Ghz Mobile Sempron, 768MB RAM, and integrated X200 graphics. Granted he only scored 2.0 in the "Windows Experience Index" he was still able to smoothly run the Aero interface...

Update: Even though I upped the voltage in the BIOS, CPU-z still reports it under load as 1.216-1.232v. EasyTune reports 1.23-1.25v Temps are showing ~45C EasyTune, 56/56C Core Temp, stock intel cooler at full speed. Orthos prime stable 13hrs+ so I'm satisfied with that. I think I'll hold off...

Yeah, it is the stock cooler. Unfortunately I might have got a bit excited with the voltage, just errored in orthos after 2hrs 45mins. Ill give it another boost.

I've heard that running less than 1:1 FSB:RAM hurts performance though, and its only available on the 975X mobos, which are at least double than what I got the Gigabyte for :( Its a shame such a good chip ended up with such cheap sticks ;) (Although the ram has overclocked very nicely too...

Thanks. Unfortunately, being a P965 board, I can only go 1:1 and above (2x multiplier for ram), which means I can't take it any higher without wasting my money on my current ram and spending an obscene amount on DDR2-800, or -cough- DDR2-1066 chips, which I'm not prepared to do (yet... ;))...

I've just recently gone out and built a C2D system (see sig). I'm currently orthos priming, and my temps are ~53-57C SpeedFan/Gigabyte EasyTune, and 64-65C/60-63C for my two cores using Core Temp. I'm using the good old stock cooler, with EasyTune adjusting the speed of the fan as temps rise...

recommend some affordable DDr2 sticks that will do 900mhz on a Gigabyte DS3 board

My 1st Time To OC..................

Try bumping up the vdimm a bit (I've pushed it up to 2.1v [+0.3]). Really all I've done is manually keyed in the values for my ram at 5-5-5-15, changed the FSB to 400, and memory multi to 2 (1:1), and bumped the vDimm up. With one stick of 1Gb of my Kingston Value Ram DDR2-667 Cas5 I got...

For what its worth, I just built a system with the E6300 and am using Kingston Value Ram 667 Cas5 at DDR2-900 5-5-5-15 timings, 2.1v. If you're not overclocking, definately don't buy 1066mhz ram. Stock, the Core 2 Duo runs on a 533Mhz FSB, which, 1:1 you only really need 533Mhz ram. My advice...

New Enhanced OVerclocking bios for GA-965P-S3

Critique my 'planned' build (please :))

DVD writer will probably be some BenQ or something - as long as it reads and writes it will be fine. Any particular suggestions? I am being cheap here :) I thought 400W would be fine, but I could get a Enermax noisetaker 485W for ~NZ$120. Definately no SLI and the rig has got to last ~5 years...

HP NC8430 - getting full display brightness on battery power?

I have an nx8220, and as far as I know, you can't get the screen on battery power to be as bright as it is plugged in. I'm guessing you've tried enabling/disabling the light sensor aswell? (fn+f11 on my laptop, which is basically the same as yours bar the serial port and specs).

Put it this way - I wouldn't overclock my graphics card in my laptop anymore. Those burning laptops are a bit too much for me. Sure it'll be fine if the battery is taken out, but I'm not risking overclocking anything in my laptop when the battery is there. Enjoy your overclocking :)

Why isn't there more excitement about...

Wow, I wish the 35W 3800+ X2 was only ~NZ$280 ($140US). Instead, its a whopping NZ$700 which is around US$350 :disgust: So yea, I'd much prefer a Core Duo E6300 or 6400 at around half the 35W X2 cost :D

Dell or HP or Toshiba laptops that support and have drivers available for XP Pro X64?

For 64bit, you'll want to either wait for Merom processors to come into notebooks (ie the T5x00 or T7x00 series Core 2 Duo) or buy now with the Turion 64 or Turion X2 64. Core 2 Duo will be faster than Turion X2, but the current Core Duos (T2x00) are not 64bit processors, and therefore won't be...

Buying a Laptop - anyone have Fingerprint reader?

HP does support multiple users. I've had 2 different user logins for logging into uni stuff (one for me, one for my sister). All you have to do is select the user login, and then it'll log you in. (Again, I'm assuming it works the same with the fingerprint reader)

I have an nx8220, and the HP Credentials Manager stores passwords and can automatically log you in, or just fill in username/passwords for web pages and anything that requires password identification, plus you can individually manage which websites/networks you want to be automatically logged...

I don't know about your first question, but for the X1400, I think the dedicated memory is 128mb, and shares up to 128mb of your system ram, hence 256mb "Hypermemory"

Less than spectacular retail X6800 3D results

I've read through that thread and many other threads there at XS, and it is a general consensus that the Bad Axe and Asus mobos over-report temps by 15-20 Celcius. Also, the guy in that thread was only playing with the multi's, not FSB, so he managed to raise the multiplier on stock volts...

So is it worth going Conroe with Kentsfield coming out supposedly Jan of 07?

I'm thinking kentsfield may just be an EE part first off Q1 '07. Therefore, it will probably be EE pricing at $1k or possibly more.

Anyone else have an HP laptop....

Its a Pentium 4 thing :) Pentium M and Core Duo/Solo are the processors you want for longest battery life. Turion and Turion X2 are just as good too. But yeah, Pentium 4 + laptop = short battery life and lots of heat :)
