Question If you have bought a CPU in the last 3 years or so (since Ryzen came out) What was it ?

I went with the 8700K around the time they announced the 9th gen would be compatible with Z370. Then swapped to a 9700K when Microcenter had a sale. Photoshop is my main program and at the time Intel's frequency advantage won out. If I were building today it would be hard to ignore the 3900X.

    Question best display

Rather rude... As stated, 'best' is not a single monitor, but rather the best one for a purpose. If you're a pro video editor / content creator / photographer, etc., the 'best' monitor is likely going to be a $2K+ Eizo, NEC, Asus Pro Art, HP Dreamcolor, etc. for the color accuracy. But that...

Question Space fluctuation on OS SSD?

Do you use MS OneDrive? I've found it tends to make daily backups (sometimes multiple times per day) that can quickly eat up space. Each backup folder can be 100s of MB depending on what you have. Check this folder under your username:

Question What is the CPU vendor of your primary rigs?

9700k in my Z370 desktop. My son is rocking my old i7 3770 for his gaming machine. That's about to be upgraded to a X99 with a 6850k pulled from a workstation I got free from work. Fortunate circumstances! He'll have that with a GTX 980 and a 512GB 950 Pro drive, plus an 850 Pro I've got...

Question Still use a 850 Pro that has sat for a year?

I'm going to build my son a new gaming desktop, and one of the parts I have is a 512GB 850 Pro that came out of a previous system. It has sat on a shelf for about 12 months. I'm familiar with the fact that SSDs lose data over time when not used, but assuming this drive will be fully formatted...

Question 9700K after overlock - same benchmark score

@coercitiv The export loads all cores up, at least according to task manager. It's one of the few operations in Photoshop that actually uses multi-cores decently. Not sure if there's a point it caps out, but so far it's seen good use on 6/8 core chips. I do wonder if it uses AVX...

Question 9700K after overlock - same benchmark score

I was watching in RealTemp and they seemed to hover right around 4.6 I believe at stock. They were definitely clocking higher in RealTeamp after the OC.

Question 9700K after overlock - same benchmark score

I just bought a new 9700K to upgrade my 8700K for S&G (price was good). My 8700K has been OC'd to 5.0GHz with Hyperthreading "off", as my main program (Photoshop) actually benchmarks faster with it off. I'm using a MSI Z370 SLI Plus mobo, rest of the specs are in my signature. A basic test I...

Intels new 10 Core?! - How true is this leak do you think?

But for how long? Shouldn't we ask this about AMD also? Historically, they come out with good products and enjoy a few years of success, followed by a way-too-long period of mediocrity. Rinse and repeat. They're on a high note again, hope they can keep it rolling for the long term. But...

Question How long should a HDD last?

Just my opinion of course, but in a typical home PC if the hard drive makes it past the first year then it will likely last a looooong time. Sure, they can fail at any time but so can other components. Follow rule number one with computers: backup, backup, backup!

The disappointing slowdown CPU progress in last 6 years vs 4 years before (10 yrs) ago

@DrMrLordX You can blame cell phones for most of it. Sales of point and shoot and low end DSLRs have been in the toilet and sinking further for a number of years now. As you said, nobody buys a DSLR now just to get daily life snapshots. So it's only the pros and enthusiasts buying 'real...

The disappointing slowdown CPU progress in last 6 years vs 4 years before (10 yrs) ago

It's not just CPUs, but electronics development in general seems to have really slowed down the last decade. My main hobby is digital photography. The decade between 2002-2012 saw MASSIVE improvement every couple of years on all fronts. If it was 2008 and you were shooting a camera made in...

What is the largest capacity SSD in your primary Home PC?

A Microcenter Inland Premium 1TB NVMe is my single largest drive, it's a secondary drive for photo editing. Nice drive, benches faster than the 960 EVO 500GB I have for C:. That Inland drive is now $99 at Microcenter. Have a pair of MX500 setup in RAID 0 for a 1TB gaming drive. Has one game...

    Budget 970 Evo killer?

Been eyeing this drive at Microcenter for a while and finally bit the bullet. Inland Premium 1TB NVMe drive for $135. Added it on my 2nd slot for my photo editing drive, and boy does it scream! It's faster than my 960 EVO C: drive, and by a decent amount. Phison E12 and TLC memory, seems...

    SSD 860 EVO/PRO

The Pro is still the best SATA drive on the market, but its advantages are not worth the VERY hefty price premium for practically all use cases. If you need performance, it costs as much or more than many very good NVMe drives that are an order of magnitude faster. As for endurance....unless...

Question What was your first SSD and when did you buy it?

Mine was a 240GB Intel 535 that was the C: drive in my new i7 3770 build in early 2013. It now lives in an external enclosure as a USB storage drive.

    Discussion 8GB vs 16GB vs 32GB in 2018

Yeah but that same old person will probably keep that machine practically forever. It's fine today, but how well will 4GB be doing five years from now? Might still hold up, but 8GB would certainly be better, especially if it's a machine that can't be upgraded.

    Discussion 8GB vs 16GB vs 32GB in 2018

8 vs 16 vs 32...they are all relevant in 2019 just depends on the particular user's needs. IMHO machines with 4GB should be discontinued except for Chromebooks. No W10 machine should come with 4GB today, 8 is the bare minimum I would suggest to anyone if they expect the machine to be useful...

Less but faster or More but slower?

8GB of any RAM won't be enough if you're heavily using the Adobe Suite. RAM speed doesn't matter if your PC is always out of memory. 16GB would be the bare minimum IMHO, get the fastest you can afford.

Am I crazy for considering a SSD RAID 0 storage drive?

Thanks, everyone. I'll probably just buy the extra drive and do the RAID. Will be something fun to play with.

Am I crazy for considering a SSD RAID 0 storage drive?

I do mostly photo editing (large RAW files) on my desktop. Currently I have 3 drives in the box: 500GB 960 EVO for C: drive, 500GB Crucial MX500 for my 'editing drive', and a 5TB spinner for main data storage. I have solid backup routines on two external HDDs I'd like to bump up the "editing...

    Core i9 9900k Builders Thread

I have no issue sticking with the 8700k, it runs great. But I built the system with the plan to drop in the 'the beast' and sell off the 6 core. Probably still could, just may not be able to fully overclock the 8c/16t chip. I have workflows that can use the extra threads, plus...I just want...

    Core i9 9900k Builders Thread

Man...I built a Coffe Lake system right after I heard Z370 would take the 9th gen chips. My 8700k is comfortably OC'd at 4.8, but not sure my MSI SLI Plus mobo will handle the power needs to OC the 9900k... I would have bought a more robust mobo had I known what a power hog this chip would be...

Speculation: PC enthusiasts will migrate to HEDT

Would have to agree with this. If your'e picking individual components out and assembling your own desktop, that's a very small percentage of computer buyers these days. Probably less than 1% of the population. So yes, I'd classify that level of consumer as an enthusiast rather than somebody...

    The 8700k

Yeah I've been using that benchmark for a little while. My previous 3770 was scoring in the 580 range for the overall score. Felt it was finally time to move on. Results with the new system at 4.8Ghz and 32GB of 3200c16 memory: Photoshop CC 2018,Overall Score,Ver. 19.1.5,1031,Score Photoshop...

    The 8700k

I just built a new 8700K system a couple of weeks ago, upgrading from Ivy Bridge. Was going to wait for 9th gen but once it was confirmed that Z370 is compatible I said f-it and pulled the trigger. Microcenter deals made it too tempting to hold out any longer. I'm thrilled with the 8700K...

How much RAM does your primary Home PC have?

32GB in mine on a i7 3770. The only thing I do that needs lots of RAM is editing multi-layer PSD files in photoshop. 16-bit TIFFs images from 36mp cameras with lots of layers...Photoshop can eat 15GB or so during a normal work session.

CPU performance improvements over last 15-20 years

I've had computers in my life almost as long as I can remember... starting with the Commodore 64 when I was about 6. Every few years we got a new computer and it was always a mind-blowing experience how much faster the new PC was. 4 year gaps were going from a 60Mhz Pentium to a 300Mhz...

    Haswell, not dead yet!

I personally don't mind that CPU progress has stalled. Don't really miss the days where an expensive PC was "old" after 2 years, and an obsolete POS after 4 four.

    Trade a 3770 for mildly OC'd 2600K?

Well gang, I decided not to do the 2600K swap but took the advice of the "unlock limited bins" on my 3770. Never even knew about that trick. My Gigabyte D3H board only allowed a max multiplier of 41, but it added some speed. Doing a benchmark on RAW to JPG exports from Photoshop, it made the...

    Trade a 3770 for mildly OC'd 2600K?

    Trade a 3770 for mildly OC'd 2600K?

My current desktop has a 3770 (non K) in a Z77 mobo. At work we are repurposing some older CAD workstations to "general office" boxes. These stations have 2600K CPUs, and the IT guy is cool with me swapping one out if I want to. I have a Hyper 212 Evo cooler and a Corsair CX430 in my PC. The...

i7-4930k still good CPU for gaming?

If you haven't overclocked it yet, get a good cooler and ramp that baby up over 4.0 Ghz. You'll close most of that single threaded gap and still have killer multi core performance. Unless you want the mobo features of the newer platform, what you have is still highly capable.

What did you replace the Note 7 with?

I'm surprised you're willing to eat the cost, since it may be a paperweight in a few months. Worst case they send an update to brick it. Best case they will cripple it further and certainly never update software or security. Why not take it back while it's still worth something? It's a great...

What did you replace the Note 7 with?

If the Note had not turned me into a fanboi of the stylus, the V20 was at the top of my list. That phone looks like it could be a great one, just hope it doesn't develop issues the previous LG flagships have had recently. I still have my G2 that I used before my Note 7 and that device is...
