    Hitachi Deskstar 1TB HD31000IDK/7K - $69.99

Just grabbed one this morning to replace the Seagate 750gb 7200.11 drive I just returned for bricking on me... Have not installed yet, but it's definitely the 32mb buffer one... Yes, SATA cable included, just the cheap stiff red one... Nothing special... - G

What do you use to protect your camera lcd screens?

For my Sony a700, I've used and been quite happy with Giotto's AEGIS Pro series hard protectors... 98% light transmission, 12 layer AR coatings, etc... Top of the line... The Sony branded ones are cheap, scratch easily, and don't stay on very well... The Giotto's ones are quite nice, although...

Which one is better... of the Call of Juarez

Just finished BiB (#2) but have yet to play the original. The quickdraw part of the game took a couple deaths to figure out at first, now it's pretty much second nature... At normal skill level, by the end of the game I was winning almost all the draws on the first try... Just have to keep the...

    Trine PC - pretty cool

Played the demo, not bad... The spinner was the most time consuming puzzle to get it just right, but the concept came pretty quick... Controls weren't bad with kb+m... Not sure if I'd want a full game though, the demo was like "Cool concept, short fun, but I'm over it already..." I'll come...

Is there a difference on the Nikon 50mm f1.8 and the Canon 50mm f1.8

Did you compare a photo take from the same place, same settings, just a look through the view finder? Sure, the crop factor will be a minor difference, but I believe there is an additional small difference in the view finders on those two cameras, giving the impression that you are capturing...

Sony A350 and Non Sony Lens

Any more info on the lens that's causing the issue? I shoot the Sony a700 and there is a menu option to enable/disable shutter without lens attached. Not sure if that is available on the a350. I use it for shooting with manual m42 lenses via adapter. No electronics, no AF, no nothing...

    I upgraded my camera

As noted "In Time", better camera or not, anyone will get better results once they get more familiar with their new gear.... Take two equally good photographers (when measured with same gear), then give one of them all new, better, but notable different gear than he was using previously. Then...

What is the proper way to shoot a person on a roof at night?

Glad to see I wasn't the only one thinking how to best "snipe" the person.. Wind, range, etc... ;) Fuzzy covered it though... Tripod, expose for surroundings, rear(slow) sync flash for the person. Might need to -X a few stops on the flash to not blow the person out. Let us know how it...

can't connect to battle.net w/ diablo 2 because my username is too long

Yep, but EPLite now seems to be tracked by Warden too and boots you from the game... Not aware of any current MH's... The bots are still running fine, and are just nice script systems without code insertion involved, so warden doesn't catch them at the moment... You can find them via google...

    E8400 Overclocking

I've had my C0 8400 running at 3.89ghz for daily use at 1.325v for a year now on a GA P35 board with basic aftermarket air cooling.. Benched okay just over 4ghz, but I choose keep it a little lower for friendlier voltage and temps for everyday use... Hoping to get my hands on a qx9750 soon...

Another fisheye experiment with slow shutter

Nice result... You say one second exposure, so I supposed trailing flash (rear sync?) to freeze the subjects after some painting? It's not an area I've played with before, so I don't have much of a clue on the technique or terminology...

    Shots from yesterday

Nice shots, nice model. 2 is a solid one, as others noted. I do like 5, although the lighting is just a hair harsh with a bit of dark shadow showing in places where it shouldn't... Additional soft/fill light sources would have been perfect, but it's still not a bad shot. I'm sure your model...

If you had to choose, what is the favorite pic you have taken?

Nice shots Rufus... I like the fence one the most.. Might call it "Sunrise" or something as an abstract name... Really does have a nice look of the sun... And thanks for the positive comments on "Fresh Tracks"... Right place, right time, with good company... Hope to have a lot more like it...

If you had to choose, what is the favorite pic you have taken?

Some nice shots above.... It's always tough to come up with favorites, so I just default to my most recent fav's... Two from last month... One from last year... Heelside bottom turns in the spring fluff... Fresh tracks... - I do have a better version of this processed for prints with...

Small Video Camera with Video In...

Now that a lot of nifty little "flip" style HD video cameras are coming our for quite good prices, is anyone aware of one that accepts a standard "analog" video in for recording from an external camera or device? For my use, I have a weather and shock proof "lipstick" style camera I use for...

So theres this new lens attached to my camera

Nice lens, but the shot screams point & shoot camera with that much sharpening... good composition and colors though.. :) Could be a flickr thing after resizing... I really like my old Minolta 28-75 f2.8... Not quite L standard when wide open, but.... For the range and general use, it's...

Just got my new Olympus 850 SW (Waterproof) and as much as I love it, Olympus left a bad taste in my mouth

Yep, not sure why they did that, but they do clearly document that fact so it shouldn't have been that big of a surprise... For the pano stuff, I could care less. But it really does suck to restrict the movie mode. They claim it's to reduce customer support issues related to poor quality...

Ok, I have to brag about my latest find...

Damn, nice get Andrew... Being a Minolta/Sony guy I'm quite jealous... In my area, there are a few vultures that are always circling Craigslist for Sony/Minolta deals, so they are usually gone within hours of posting... However, I've picked up a couple "good" deals, nothing as great as yours...

    IPS vs 120hz monitor

120hz also does improve video viewing when the player supports it correctly. The 1080p24 source can be displayed a lot smoother (action moving across the screen, etc) on the 120hz displays compared to the 60hz displays... Major video formats now all go into 120hz evenly for more consistent...

    Waterproof camera?

I would stick with the Olympus and Pentax line for now, as they have a good track record. You don't need the latest model of either to get a good camera that works down to 10ft, the most recent will go as deep as 30ft and add a bit more shock proofing. Image quality is about the same on both...

    Hardest games of all time

I immediately thought of the old Infocom games as well. Zorks were tough... Leather Goddess of Pheobes(sp?) too.... Old school... As for more recent games, hmmm... the first time I tried to play a FPS game on a console it just pissed me off... Once I got the controls down, not too bad but it...

    Circular Polarizers

Only you know how much of a difference it'll make for you. If I had to guess, I'd say go with the cheap one and you'll be fine. For most work, it'll probably be fine... For occasional use, the quality is not that important. The more you use it and expose it to day to day wear and tear, the...

Some samples from the Sigma 17-70

Lens looks nice... Not a bad range to work with... As for your test shots, putting the filter on changed your focus point the tiniest amount. This contributed to the slightly softer look on the quarter, and seems to have affected some of the details on the watch. A 1-2mm shift makes a...

HP Dreamcolor LP2480ZX 24" LED LCD

First, to the OP, I don't know the answer to your question, but I'll look into it. I'm curious as well... I've been in love with this monitor since it was announced over a year ago here, and when it hit the streets last summer. My gut says it's just improvements and maturation of the build...

Sweet photos..... Glad I caught this post, as I missed it the first time around on DPR where I usually lurk in the KM SLR and Sony SLR forums... The more I see from that camera, the more I like it. I love my a700 and am not rich, so I'll have to wait on the 24mp upgrade.. ;) Oh, and I like...

D90 autofocus at infinity is fuzzy

Yep, sounds like an issue. Doesn't take much of a difference in the lens mount to throw off infinity focus. I was going to ask if you could get a good focus manually, to confirm it's an AF issue rather than lens or body setup. Hope it works out quickly for you!

Would you say my photos look too overprocessed?

Your shots look good, but as others have indicated, due to the more conservative processing, they don't have the same pop as the ones you linked on the Fredmiranda site. You seem to have done a lot to enhance detail and expand total dynamic range, but it seems a bit "average" from shadow...

    D3X

I'm looking forward to see what Nikon has done with Sony's sensor... It'll be nice to see how it performs matched up with Nikon's Pro level bells and whistles... I don't expect much of an IQ difference if any from Sony's implementatuon, but we'll see... The price is, well, not cheap... But...

Finally took a stab at HDR

Cool shot, but a bit too intense for my taste. It's at that point in the treatment where it has gone from a super natural to unnatural look to me. But HDR is definitely an artistic treatment that is never received the same way by everyone. Might turn out nice in print... Hard to say with...

    D3X beta out.

Cool.. Probably the same or mildly modified version of Sony's 24mp sensor. In which case noise levels should be similar, with a slightly different grain to it. For what ever reason, as seen on the d300 compared to the a700, even with the same base sensors Nikons produced a more acceptable type...

hdr example -- three images combined into one image with 32 bit data

Yep, the original shot is just not something that warrants HDR treatment. Not a wide dynamic range to start with, and the subject matter isn't all that compelling... Now, maybe your plan was to just take that photo and practice with it to see what HDR could do, in that case yah, you did...

My Personal St. Louis Arch Shot

Cool shot though, even if it did need a little help to become "perfect" in others eyes... All about being ready, the right time and in the right place... Kinda handy having a retoucher so close to help creating the composite image. If I asked my wife to touch up the image I'd end up with a...

New TAMRON 18-255 F/3.5-6.3 AF Di-II LD Macro lense for NIKON DSLR

As noted above, definitely a popular lens on the Sony and Pentax bodies due to their ability to stabilize it. I have it and it really makes for the best walk around lens when you need a single lens solution. Stopped down, it's sharp enough throughout the range to not miss a shot. For your...

crap. wife's sister wants me to be the photog at her friend's engagement party

I'd have to echo the other's thoughts, try to say thanks, but no thanks. Your initial response was on track. Even if renting the right gear is an option; if you are not familiar or used to handling it, the odds are you won't be able to get the most out of it, and will still struggle to meet...
