That's what would have shown up in the log. What I'm looking for is what is displayed in the command prompt window after typing in the "sobsvc -v" command.

Did you perhaps run "sobsvc -i" without Administrative privileges? That's the only reason I can think of why the service might fail to install. I've never heard any reports of this before...

Hi, folks - a new version of the service handler is out. Full discussion is here on the main project forum. Please give it a try and let me know if there are any problems. In particular, I think this should fix that pesky intermittent caching failure when the clients restart.

SW - it's only clients below 0.97 that are rejected (because they don't submit residues). They've been banned for a long time...no server-side change happened with the 1.10 release. Lots of folks are still using 0.97 Linux clients.

Baldy18 - until the next client version comes out, I would definitely suggest using the "/s" switch to restart stalled clients. It's not a bad idea even after that since there is no guarantee that the new one will *never* stall (things do happen...)

Huntress - It looks at the progress every 5 minutes and if it hasn't done anything in that particular 5 minute interval it restarts. Usually stalls happen right at the end of a block, so I would expect it to notice the stall somewhere between 16 and 21 minutes after the stalled block started...

Help: SoB client fails w/ odd error: PROBLEM SOLVED

If it now seems to be otherwise stable, another thing you might try is clearing the SB cache (change the user name to "anonymous" then immediately change it back). It's *possible* that the cache is semi-nonsensical due to the previous errors and that's causing the SB-specific grief.

Did you install sb normally before you did the service install? The normal sb has to be installed and *at least* the config must be saved before doing the service install. Otherwise things go really haywire...I've seen it happen, but can't replicate it because it doesn't happen again if you...

SoB: server borked? my 3 home clients are stuck

Server appears to be back up now. Some clients made it through the outage just fine with just "unable to transmit..." messages (until, of course, they finished a full test and absolutely needed to phone home) while others repeatedly stalled, were restarted (if being monitored), then stalled...

Hi, Overkiller - this has been thought about some, but not implemented (yet). The main reason is that there is no way with the current client to have it send a proth result without obtaining a new one at the same time. The result is that your queue never really "empties" and you would run into...

I agree, amcdonald. It is likely an OS issue and it's probably happening on your other boxen but with smaller swings. I have a P3 800 running XP and SOB and never really noticed its swings until I started looking carefully at it as a result of the large swings on my dual Xeon box.

amcdonald - there are new versions posted of both sobsvc.zip (NT/2K/XP service handler) and sobsvc9x.zip (9x/Me service handler). These implement an undocumented "-h:<num>" switch which will do a periodic restart every <num> minutes. So, to do an hourly restart, use "sobsvc -h:60" Let me know...

I believe I know the answer to this one...they have zillions of not-so-very-fast clients. Consequently, the speed fluctuations that everyone experiences as the k/n pairs change get averaged over lots of clients and (more importantly) lots of time. A group of fewer, really-fast clients will see...

It will keep going as long as it has more work to do...that is, if it fails to transmit an intermediate block it just keeps crunching. OTOH, if it completely finishes a whole Proth block, then it will retry periodically (there's a setting as to how often) until it succeeds - no more work done...
