    SOB: Performance issues and optimizations

That's what would have shown up in the log. What I'm looking for is what is displayed in the command prompt window after typing in the "sobsvc -v" command.

    SOB: Performance issues and optimizations

Let's try this - fire up a command prompt, cd to "\program files\sb" (or wherever you installed the SB client) and run sobsvc -v This should print out the current version number and installation status. If it says that it's NOT installed, then run sobsvc -i again and tell me what its...

    SOB: Performance issues and optimizations

Did you perhaps run "sobsvc -i" without Administrative privileges? That's the only reason I can think of why the service might fail to install. I've never heard any reports of this before...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 02/29 <-- Not another for 4 years! ;)

Just to let you folks know, a new Linux/FreeBSD client has been released and is available on the project download page. Info is available here. Enjoy!

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 01/26

Hi, folks - a new version of the service handler is out. Full discussion is here on the main project forum. Please give it a try and let me know if there are any problems. In particular, I think this should fix that pesky intermittent caching failure when the clients restart.

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 06/06 - Welcome galo! **New Client Information**

Baldy18 - check the Pending Test Management page now. Louie just put in a new column to show what rate each test is running as far as the server is concerned. If that column doesn't add up to what shows in the stats, e-mail him. Another user is having a similar problem right now and he's...

New Seventeen or Bust Client V1.10 Released **All Please Read**

SW - it's only clients below 0.97 that are rejected (because they don't submit residues). They've been banned for a long time...no server-side change happened with the 1.10 release. Lots of folks are still using 0.97 Linux clients.

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 06/06 - Welcome galo! **New Client Information**

With the new client release, Louie also put in a new page on the server side that can be used for tracking down problems like yours, Baldy18 - log in to the main site, go to Preferences, then go to the Pending Test Management page - there is a list of all the tests assigned to your user ID, with...

New Seventeen or Bust Client V1.10 Released **All Please Read**

If you are currently using the service handler, you need to STOP the service BEFORE you install the client upgrade. Here's the procedure (assumes that SB is installed in c:\program files\sb and that the upgrade installer is located there as well): *NT/2K/XP* Command Prompt - net stop...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 06/05 - Rate increasing slightly, but so is TPR and ORU :(

Huntress - that's a good suggestion. I'll rewrite for the next release. Everyone - new Windows client has been released. Here is the thread on the main forum announcing it. Edit: if you're currently using the service handler, be sure to STOP it BEFORE running the new client installer...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 06/05 - Rate increasing slightly, but so is TPR and ORU :(

Baldy18 - until the next client version comes out, I would definitely suggest using the "/s" switch to restart stalled clients. It's not a bad idea even after that since there is no guarantee that the new one will *never* stall (things do happen...)

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 06/05 - Rate increasing slightly, but so is TPR and ORU :(

Huntress - It looks at the progress every 5 minutes and if it hasn't done anything in that particular 5 minute interval it restarts. Usually stalls happen right at the end of a block, so I would expect it to notice the stall somewhere between 16 and 21 minutes after the stalled block started...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 06/05 - Rate increasing slightly, but so is TPR and ORU :(

Huntress - sounds like you need to do the following at a Command Prompt: cd "\program files\sb" net stop "Seventeen or Bust service" sobsvc -s sobsvc -m net start "Seventeen or Bust service" If, in addition, you want them to run at lower priority (true idle), insert a "sobsvc -x" line (where...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 06/05 - Rate increasing slightly, but so is TPR and ORU :(

Baldy18 - you say the client is locking up...is the service handler not doing appropriate restarts? There was apparently a flurry of client stalls (probably something on the server end) around 5:00pm Eastern time today, but in every case I know of, the handler caught them and they're all...

Help: SoB client fails w/ odd error: PROBLEM SOLVED

If it now seems to be otherwise stable, another thing you might try is clearing the SB cache (change the user name to "anonymous" then immediately change it back). It's *possible* that the cache is semi-nonsensical due to the previous errors and that's causing the SB-specific grief.

    SOB: K62 400 wont crunch?

Did you install sb normally before you did the service install? The normal sb has to be installed and *at least* the config must be saved before doing the service install. Otherwise things go really haywire...I've seen it happen, but can't replicate it because it doesn't happen again if you...

SoB: server borked? my 3 home clients are stuck

Server appears to be back up now. Some clients made it through the outage just fine with just "unable to transmit..." messages (until, of course, they finished a full test and absolutely needed to phone home) while others repeatedly stalled, were restarted (if being monitored), then stalled...

    SOB question

Hi, Overkiller - this has been thought about some, but not implemented (yet). The main reason is that there is no way with the current client to have it send a proth result without obtaining a new one at the same time. The result is that your queue never really "empties" and you would run into...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milstones - 04/24 - ORU's rate has DOUBLED! :Q

I agree, amcdonald. It is likely an OS issue and it's probably happening on your other boxen but with smaller swings. I have a P3 800 running XP and SOB and never really noticed its swings until I started looking carefully at it as a result of the large swings on my dual Xeon box.
  24. M

SoB: Daily Stats and Milstones - 04/24 - ORU's rate has DOUBLED! :Q

Are you by any chance running XP on the box you're talking about? I ask this because several folks have noticed a wider-than-expected variability when running the client under XP. More specifically, it appears that after a box restart the client will be slower than expected, usually until...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milstones - 04/24 - ORU's rate has DOUBLED! :Q

Here's the deal (I think - this is my best guess based on a number of things I have observed): the server database keeps track of intermediate blocks only based on "time of first contact", "time of last contact" and "progress made at time of last contact." So, when a client changes user ids in...

    SOB: ....

If I'm remembering correctly, the SoB client makes good use of the SSE2 extensions in the P4 and the AMD architecture seems to be generally advantageous for the client. Bottom line is that P3 < Athlon < P4, even for clock speeds that run about the same in most benchmarks. The client also...

I have a guess on this...'tis the season in which usage in academic computer labs spikes heavily (something about final exams/projects, assignments that have been given out for months but not worked on until now, etc.) I would suspect that once the semester is over (in a couple of weeks or so)...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 04/10 - Increasing Daily Rate, but still losing lots of ground to ORU!

amcdonald - there are new versions posted of both sobsvc.zip (NT/2K/XP service handler) and sobsvc9x.zip (9x/Me service handler). These implement an undocumented "-h:<num>" switch which will do a periodic restart every <num> minutes. So, to do an hourly restart, use "sobsvc -h:60" Let me know...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 04/10 - Increasing Daily Rate, but still losing lots of ground to ORU!

amcdonald - that's an easy mod. The only downside I know of is that on a restart (if you don't have the service hidden through the Service Control Manager) the client pops up a message box (which the service handler dismisses), but which could be disconcerting during the day. OTOH, I don't...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 04/10 - Increasing Daily Rate, but still losing lots of ground to ORU!

I believe I know the answer to this one...they have zillions of not-so-very-fast clients. Consequently, the speed fluctuations that everyone experiences as the k/n pairs change get averaged over lots of clients and (more importantly) lots of time. A group of fewer, really-fast clients will see...

A quick word about the 9x/Me handler...it won't necessarily keep the icon out of the system tray - the ability to do that in a foolproof way relies on NT/2K/XP-specific stuff. If the client needs to be restarted after a user has logged in, then the icon will show up at that point. If the...

SoB: Daily Stats and Milestones - 04/04 - Welcome back SeanD!

It will keep going as long as it has more work to do...that is, if it fails to transmit an intermediate block it just keeps crunching. OTOH, if it completely finishes a whole Proth block, then it will retry periodically (there's a setting as to how often) until it succeeds - no more work done...
