    Is Maxtor really that bad?

My experience: I've seen roughly half a dozen (all Maxtor) hard drives fail in the last year or so. This is within my little group of friends and family. All seem to fail at about 1.5 years or so, outside the warranty of course. I may change my mind later on, but right now I wouldn't...

Do you shower on your days off?

Strange thing though, is that the idea of daily showering has only come into practice fairly recently (like within the last 100 years) Makes you wonder how human-kind survived many millennia with bi-weekly or monthly bathing/showering. ;)

Repost from months ago, but some might get a kick out of this who've never seen this before. ATTN: All those who scream REPOST.......stop wasting your time and let this thread die. You are only prolonging the "agony" when you post to this thread. The biggest, baddest, and most powerful diesel...

What's the point of "polarized" outlets?

The original point of the ground on an AC outlet is to provide a path to ground in case of electrical malfunction in the device. If the device malfunctions and sends power out to a part that the user commonly touches, that power can and often does use the person as a path to ground (you get...

Those whacky Californians are at it again...

What a stupid idea. :disgust: I am genuinely ashamed of my state. What's next? Perhaps we should allow 9-13 year olds to vote. Then after that, we can enfranchise the illegal aliens. Heck, why stop even there? How about dropping the minimum age for the position of CA state governor from 30...

YAT(icket)T: Got pulled over for going 86 in a 65. *UPDATED AGAIN*)I BEAT THE TICKET......,almost*

FYI: Speeding tickets in California (and most other states) are classified as infractions (not misdemeanors.) Therefore, you have no right to trial by jury. If you decide to contest, you must prove your case to a judge. In fact, a jury is statistically MORE likely to convict you than a judge...

Which is more important for an oil change? 3 months or 3k miles?

I have to agree with a lot of the others here. 3000 miles between oil changes is not a realistic interval for changing oil. It's promulgated by the oil companies and quick lube places in order to keep business going at a rapid pace. Do you realize that more than 4 BILLION quarts of oil are used...

Buy TurboTax get stuff free CompUSA 1/01

Intuit and Turbo Tax used to get my business every year for the last 6 years. However, they totally lost my trust when they implemented that hairbrained activation scheme. I was so incensed at Intuit that I even drilled a hole in the Turbo Tax CD they sent me. Then I sent it back to Intuit...

To those with friends at Wild Bill's in Buena Park -- they're out of a job

I too have always wanted to try this place, but never got around to it because I kept forgetting. It sounds like a great place to try, but they never advertise, making it easy to let their business slip your mind. This is totally unlike Medieval Times, where I can honestly say I've seen a...

Why is knowledge spelt with a "k"?

I would venture a guess that knowledge is spelled with a "k" because it's the noun form of the word "know". If we spelled "know" without a "k", we'd have a totally differrent word now, wouldn't we? :D English has to be the strangest language in the world. Example: why do we call it a "hot...

    ECC/REG DDR RAM ????????

Memory scrubbing is an active and constant process going on all the time whereby ECC code is constantly used to read through memory and detect errors. If an errror is found, the data is corrected, then written back. Memory scrubbing's job is to find errors in memory ahead of time, and then...

    Cell phone technologies?

A couple more things you might like to know are that TDMA and CDMA use ESN's. Therefore, in order to switch your service to another phone (say you just bought a new phone), you must call up customer service and have them switch over your service to the ESN of the new phone. GSM on the other...

Recommend a good electric razor please!

I second the Panasonic Linear models. The best part of this razor is that it is wet/dry, so getting it wet in the shower is no problem. As for razor irritation, I haven't found one yet that won't bother your skin for a little bit until you get used to it, so it seems a non-issue to me.

Replacing GAS oven with ELECTRIC oven

To anyone who's interested: Hope someone didn't mention this earlier in the thread. The main reason gas ovens and other appliances (dryers, water heaters, etc.) are as ubiquitous as they are, comes down to the almighty dollar. If you have all electric water heaters, ovens, dryers...

Computer does not restart if booted from windows.

Sounds like you have a problem with one of your USB devices, whether it be the actual USB controller itself, or any peripheral USB device you might have attached to your computer. Need 600V AC

As a licensed professional electrician, I can tell you that there is NO WAY you can get the kind of power you need to run this thing from a 220V 200A single phase residential service. It is simply not possible, so don't even try. For example, the minimum size breaker needed to legally power...

Charter New Promotion 1st, 4th and 7th Month Free

SBC DSL new (and faster) upload speeds. Coming late October.

This is a basic principle behind how TCP/IP works, not any specific DSL problem. If you max out the upstream bandwidth of ANY connection (cable, DSL, T1, etc.), acknowlegement packets cannot get back to the server fast enough to maintain full downstream speed from that server. You are...

What's the difference between 900 MHZ and 2.4 GHZ cordless phones?

Actually, the exact opposite is true. Higher frequency signals have a harder time penetrating though objects, and require more transmitting power (to go the same distance) than lower frequencies. Not like this will really have a tangible effect on a cordless home phone though. Either 2.4Ghz...
