What is the "Average" PPD for a Stock 2600k

Got a 2685 unit started a few hrs ago and it shows 30,409 ppd. No GPU running.

Well, disabling PLL overvoltage certainly seems to have made a difference. Been folding strong for 7.5 hrs. I'm really curious about the technical relationship (if any) between this setting and the number of PWM fans running.

    Need mobo/CPU/memory combination for virtualizaton

Sounds like you're wanting to setup a hypervisor? You should consider that the Sandy Bridge 'k' chips don't support VT-d. If you are just wanting some extra VM's, I can tell you it works just fine for me on Sandy Bridge and Win 7 64 bit. So far I have VMware Player setup with 5 vm's: Win XP Pro...

    System freezing

Just hit the easy button and don't worry about it, eh? I've been stable at 4.2 for a while, and don't really want to run at 4.4. Plus I tried the autotune when I first built it, and didn't care for the results. So, I have had sleep features disabled except the hybrid sleep which I already...

    System freezing

The box has been running at idle all day without problems, so to this point it has only frozen when running at full load since adding the new fan. And thinking back to how it instantly rebooted when applying full load with fans at max, it makes me think it's a voltage setting in the the BIOS...

CPU fan on push side is plugged into CPU_FAN. CPU fan on pull side is plugged into CHA_FAN1. Both are 4 pin PWM fans, and both headers are 4 pin. All other fans are connected to Molex straight from the PSU.

    System freezing

Well I thought I was out of the woods, but after more than an hour folding at full throttle, it froze up again. Literally have not had this kind of issue at all since updating to 1253 weeks ago. The only thing different is I now have two PWM fans plugged in. I'll obviously disconnect it and go...

Just a quick update, as I finally got this setup. After some initial glitchiness (which seems to have been resolved by disabling C3/C6), I'm consistently getting 3 degrees cooler at max load. I'm folding now and getting temps of 58 61 59 55 across all cores. Very pleased with these temps, and...

Did this and some IntelBurnTest runs did just fine. Went all the way to the maximum test and no problems. I'll do some folding for a while to see if it locks up. Of course, I'd certainly like to know the background info on how a new CPU fan and the C3/C6 reporting are linked. The only thing...

    System freezing

I have been running a 2600k just fine at 4.2 Ghz, until today when I added a new fan for push/pull. I put in a Gelid FN-FW12BPL-18 as the push fan (CPU_FAN), and moved the stock CM Hyper 212+ fan to the pull side (CHA_FAN1). Both are PWM fans. When I booted, I got a CPU Fan error, and it showed...

    Set Up Complete...

You are not kidding right there. I'd like some of those Denons too. Right now I use AKG K601. Looks like I'm due to perform surgery on my Headroom Micro Amp. Got a loose jack in there, and damn sure don't want to have to drop $1000 on that Benchmark DAC-1 I want so badly. :sneaky:

Is the chipset intel problem a real problem?

My impression is that this would affect more like 100% of board owners using SATA II ports... eventually. Depends on how fast you burn through the faulty component, but every board has the flaw.

    Advice on a UPS purchase

Understand, but it helps to know what you're buying and especially when you could spend way more than is necessary to get the job done. Hopefully this discussion will help others, because seems to be a lot of room for confusion.

    Advice on a UPS purchase

Perfect, this is exactly what I needed to know. "Line interactive" is the feature I should have been reading about. This sounds more in line with what I need: the ability to shut my machine down in a pinch, which takes all of 30 seconds. Here's another peculiar aspect I read about: supposedly...

    Advice on a UPS purchase

OK I'm a little bit confused, so does the UPS only output stepped sine when there is an outage, but pure sine the rest of the time while power is active? I was under the impression that with a Back-UPS type unit, I would be running on stepped sine all the time. I admit to being a newb on what...

stupid question about Sandy Bridge Turbo

I was thinking 3.4 GHz was the default, meaning the turbo multiplier comes stock at 34. Set it to 38 and you should get 3.8 GHz, especially if you run folding or BOINC.

    Advice on a UPS purchase

I'm glad I posted the question now. Doesn't seem like a clear consensus on simulated sine wave UPS's with active PFC PSUs. Gonna put that credit card back in the wallet... Wondering now if the difference between simulated and pure is more of a benchmark difference than a real world difference.

I'm about to do the same thing, but figured I'd try to move the CM stock fan to the pull side, and put this Gelid PWM fan on the push side. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835426024 According to the specs, the Cooler Master fan can move slightly more air, so I figured it could keep...

    Advice on a UPS purchase

Honestly, power filtration and surge protection are secondary concerns. I just want to have the ability to shut down cleanly when a power outage occurs, so really only need a few minutes max. But I don't want to sacrifice power quality during normal runtime for that protection (if that makes...

    Advice on a UPS purchase

Thanks for the tips. I guess I had good reason to be hesitant on the RS 900VA. No serial port on my rig. That 1000VA Smart UPS on ups4less looks like it would fit the bill well enough. The Cyberpower unit seems to be simulated sine wave also. I suppose I don't know what tradeoff is worse...

    Advice on a UPS purchase

For peace of mind, I feel like I need a UPS for my new build to do an orderly shutdown when the power blips out. I don't really have $200 budgeted for a refurb APC Smart UPS 1500 like everyone seems to recommend. My build is in my signature, so would an APC Back-UPS RS 900VA 540W do the trick...

CM 212+ HSF and TIM application

This is exactly the method I used. 3 thin strips on the silver parts between the heat pipes if I recall. On a 2600k @ 4.2 ghz, I get about 34 C idle and max of 60 64 63 59 across the cores when folding. Going to add another fan for push/pull to see if I can shave a few degrees.

    Lancool PC-K62 and Xfx 6950?

Just a guess, but I've got an EAH5850 in mine and it looks like a 6950 would be able to extend easily into an empty 5.25" bay if needed. I lean towards yes.

Intel says flaw in Series 6 Sandy Bridge chipsets

I wish Intel had been more clear about what 2-3 years means. Is that based on 24/7 runtime? Anyway, I got my SATA ports moved over last night. PITA! because I had run my motherboard power connector in front of the Marvell ports. Almost borked my video card in the process too. Thanks Intel for...

Intel says flaw in Series 6 Sandy Bridge chipsets

If they make it difficult, that's exactly what I'll do. Buy a new one and get a refund on the old one. Who knows what I would buy at that time. I would think that should be an incentive for them to make the board swap completely hassle-free. Almost seems like a no-brainer: send the new board...

Intel says flaw in Series 6 Sandy Bridge chipsets

I wonder if using all four SATA 2 ports makes the defect more likely to rear its ugly head than if you just used one port. My understanding is it's not a question of if, but when. So the more you use them, the quicker it will fail. Another thing unclear is what Intel's 2 year estimate really...

Intel says flaw in Series 6 Sandy Bridge chipsets

I could definitely go for the free add-on card option, as I don't really want to rip out my tidy new install. PITA, you know... Just want my four ports back, and I don't envision needing any other PCI cards. For those that want the replacement, they should just send a new board (Z68?) with...
