    I had a similar problem about a year ago. If you let the computer idle on the black screen for a while does it eventually blue screen? If so what error comes up? Unfortunately for me it was a stop error, ended up being a major nightmare. I'd go ahead and do the repair.

    well i finally found a "solution" to the problem. It's not pretty. I created a DOS boot disk using a different computer and ran a manual debug. I deleted the master HD, leaving me with no partitions on the hard drive. I then ran FDISK to reformat the computer using a non-NTFS file system...

    no success :(. I am not able to do any of the above. I even tried to boot my computer with Knoppix...and it ALMOST worked. I got passed the startup initialization screen, but it then hangs...only showing the Knoppix desktop background. This is starting to sound more like a hardware issue...

    I have not updated either firmware or drivers. Safe mode crashes the same way. I did notice my computer starting to act fickle after I installed Kazaa lite. It had some XP Look feature (to make it look xp style)...i don't know if that would act like a driver or not. I appreciate everybody's help.
