Here's what I've got for you, fellas:
I started a thread in the general forum (http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=27&threadid=2324033), and got some very good suggestions. It's a quick read and has all of the backstory involved with my conundrum.
The Cliff's Notes are: I work for a...
I've got another hardware-like question:
So say you've got yourself a RAID array, you are protected from losing data due to a hard drive failure. If I do a 3-drive RAID 5 array, I should be ok unless I lose 2 drives at once. I actually had an Antec Smartpower 2.0 PSU (read: piece of...
Awesome suggestions, guys! It's really helping me get up to speed as far as current best practices for keeping data safe. Up until a couple years ago, we weren't generating much data, and weekly backups could be done on a couple of DVDs.
I'd like to automate the process as much as possible...
Howdy, fellas!
I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me. I am planning out a small storage/backup system for the small business that I work for, and thought the good people here at this forum may have been down this road before.
My company designs small medical devices, and we do...
Oh, that's a great idea! I'll try to RMA. That would really make my day, I was about to buy a bigger hard drive (maybe one o' them terabyte hard drives), and I was very bummed about having to spend an extra $70 to make sure my power supply doesn't fail and melt my motherboard. Plus, the snow...
Alrighty then, what do you guys think of this Power Supply?
Antec Earthwatts EA650 650W ATX12V Ver.2.2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817371015
JonnyGuru's article makes it look like this power supply does well in high-temperature situations, which is nice. Can you guys...
AW, FUDGEPUMPS!!
Dammit all, I got this power supply specifically so I could use it in my next build. I was running an Antec 350 watt, and thought I'd better upgrade, since I was running 3 hard drives (and still am). I figured that since Antec supplies have never let me down that a nice...
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I've got an Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 500W power supply, and anytime it is plugged in, it makes a really, really high frequency noise that seems to change pitch whenever load changes (hard drive read/write, new USB device plugged in, etc).
The...
I'm in a hell of a pickle here.
I have thoroughly trashed a Dell E510 with the premise that I'd be able to just wipe it clean and start over using Dell's really neat PC Restore feature. I mean, I really hammered on it good. I jammed it with software, and even cut 10GB out of the main...
Yup, needed to be finalized. I couldn't figure out how to finalize it (and was scared I'd ruin it), so I opened the disc with UltraISO and used the "Extract" command. It was able to pull the files off without changing the disc (read: burning any bridges, lol).
This is a cute problem:
I burned a whole bunch of files onto a DVD to back them up. Now I pop that DVD into the drive, and windows identifies it as a blank disc. When I look at the disc in Nero, I see lots of files in there as a multi-session disc.
Does anyone know what might have...
This is kind of a funny story. I nuked an eMachine W3410 a while ago, and now I want to restore it to its factory-installed OS. My problem is that now I don't seem to have a way to invoke the cool PC Angel thingy. I have left the factory-installed backup partition totally intact, which seems...
I just ran into a really, really hilarious problem.
A *special* friend of mine got herself a sweet, new Dell. So I figured I'd get her a nice graphics card as a computer-warming present (she likes teh Warcraft). So I checked with the guides at Anandtech.com and grabbed a hot, new Sapphire...

I'm having a a hell of a time cracking this problem here. In an amazingly roundabout process, I am making animated 360 degree views of products for my employer's website. If you want to know the specifics, I'll tell you all about it, but in a nutshell I: Build a model in Solidworks, render a...
Holy hell, I just read a quick n' dirty article about how to set up a real Frankenstein-style render farm. The Live CD method seems waaaaaaay better. You could pull a computer out of a dumpster, plug in power and ethernet, throw in the Live CD and have 1 more node.
Article here:
Build Your...
I'd say that's probably a pretty good option, though. Think of the savings in heat/electricity.
Also, I was on the toilet yesterday thinking about this: I figure since you're distributing threads to a large bank of slower computers, there must be a critical number of computers where the...
Tristor. . . You are the man. The MAN!!!
And I am DEFINITELY going to resurrect all of my old pieces of crap and experiment with this. If it works, my next step will be finding a local place that sells bulk refurbished computers.
I have a friend in aerospace engineering that does a lot...
I found another good thread to add to our confusion here:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69557
An argument is made that increasing RAM is overall more influential than increasing CPU power.
Can you get her started in Safe Mode?
If you're almost getting to the desktop every time, it kind of sounds like a bad driver. That was a very smart move removing all unnecessary devices, it makes it a lot easier for us to help you troubleshoot.
Where is Mechbgon when you need him? :)
Maybe we can swindle Anand into doing an article that benchmarks a few different setups in Blender, Yafray, etc.
There is an un-official benchmark going that relies on the honesty of fanboys that I found here:
http://www.eofw.org/bench/
But I would love to see an article written by the...
Wow, that's a hell of a graphics card. I've been getting by pretty well with a crusty, old, AGP Radeon 9800.
This is exciting stuff, it looks like this could be a surprisingly reasonably-priced venture!
Howdy, fellas!
With the advent of 2 and 4-core CPUs, I am wondering: Would it be worth it to sell a kidney and go for a dual-quad-core (8 cores total) setup?
I've been giving a lot of thought to spending some serious cash on a new system so that I don't have to wait 30+ hours for some of...
Wow!! Lots of great info, thanks guys!
So lemmie make sure I'm crystal clear on this:
It looks like Windows MCE isn't really necessary at all since I'd rather use software that will give me the option to spit out VCD's and DVD's with minimal struggling. I was under the false impression...
I've been thinking about getting DVR from my local Time Warner cable company here, but a couple days ago I read an article about using your PC to record/watch cable TV as opposed to old fashioned VHS and such. Plus, I think that there is a way to burn to DVD anything that you really want to...
I've been searching for a solution for this problem for a couple days now and can't seem to find one, so I thought I'd run it by you guys.
I'm looking to make little 3D representations for products on a commercial website. I was looking for an open source (read: free) method to show & rotate...
I know this one is sorta coming out of left field, but does anyone know if it's possible to use VCD or SVCD compression and burn it to a DVD? You could sure fit a lot of episodes onto a DVD as opposed to a CD. Nero has such a cool way of authoring VCD's and SVCD's, I was thinking it would be...
I've got a problem here that I've been trying to figure out for a while now, and it seems like it should be way easier than this. Here's what I've got:
I'm trying to make a neato little flash swf with lots of buttons (_btn) that you can push and another little movie clip will show some...
