You don't need a CS degree to learn how to program. All you need is a willingness to learn and to try! Keep playing around with the Raspberry PI and Python and make sure you have some fun with it.

Record your games. Afterwards, you can review them to find "where did it all go wrong?". Also, take a look at your opponents moves and figure out WHY did he make that move?

And, of course, they're using Java which has slightly different interpretation of SOAP and how certain things are represented... Ugh. I'm with you. I don't miss this at all.

I would have thought 15 ms resolution (64 ticks per second) would be fine, but it's been a long time since I've dealt with this stuff. Have you looked at the high resolution timer?

More than anything else, the "why" gets lost over time. I can look at the code to figure out WHAT it is doing, but the WHY is usually impossible without some additional comments (especially if you're doing something odd).

I've been using for quite some time now. Sometimes it can be a real pain to determine which scripts to enable, but usually it's quite straight forward.

If I remember correctly, you can't develop COM components without admin access (registering a COM component is a privileged action). Regular .NET stuff should be OK.

I loved the Commandos: Behind enemy lines. It payed to be patent and watch the guards for a while. See their patterns, find the weakest link, and remove it.

If you picture memory as a bunch of numbered boxes, when you dereference a pointer you're basically saying something like "get me what in box 1044".
In short, dereferencing means "get me what's at the end of the pointer".
