Can a completely dead cmos battery prevent a machine from turning on at all?

I always thought that the CMOS battery is just there to retain the bios settings when AC power is shut off. I wouldn't think it would prevent the pc from booting up at all (but I could be wrong). Worse thing would be you lose your bios settings, time, date,etc.

They had this priced at $369 yesterday and they still sold out. Doubt this is a pricing mistake. Maybe an error in judgement on how high they can price them before most people balk.

I'm beginning to wonder if these ASUS boards have a defect in them. I had the exact same board in my primary pc. One day, without warning, it failed to boot. No video at all. Fans were running and power indicator on the board was lit, but no boot. I shut down and reset the video card...

Lately, Newegg seems to have finally got their hard drive packing system fixed. Order a couple of drives from them last week. When I opened the box (grimacing at what I might see), I was pleasantly surprised to find each drive wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in separate box of it's own...

P5N32-E SLI issue

very odd, indeed. I had a problem with a different Asus board (P5Q VM) and Western Digital drives. In my case, the bios saw the drives, but the WD diagnostic software said I didn't have any WD drives attached. I tried diff ports and cables to no avail. I tried 4 diff 640gb and 1 500gb WD...

Biostar X58 for i7 920

I've heard some good things about the board. Their P45 Tpower board was well received here in the US (elsewhere too, I think). However, I haven't heard alot about this new board. The Asus P6T/dlx, EVGAx58 and Gigabyte X58 boards seem to get the majority of the press here. Customer service...

I'd say that they are fine for basic, no frills pc's. Unstable power supplies aren't good for any mobo, no matter which brand. If you have a crappy mobo, a great power supply isn't going to change the likelihood that your pc will be glitchy.

visiontek cards and aftermarket cooler

Spinejam, This is exactly what I do to ease my guilt for stockpiling so much stuff. What I can't sell I end up giving it to friends and relatives in the form of "upgrades". Take the pc I'm building for my 10 yr old daughter: Abit IP35pro E6850 with Scythe ninja B 2gb ADATA DDR2 PC6400...

4850 no video prior to driver install

Is this an ECS crap mobo that came as pkg deal at Fry's? If so and you have the same problem after getting another 4850, then it's probably the mobo (got 2 of those myself to keep as paperweights - noone wants to buy them from me:shocked:)

IP35 pro v1.1 memory problems/ questions

Well, my problem didn't get fixed till I changed my memory to some Gskill DDR2 PC6400 2x2gb dimms. The Adata would make 1 pass on Memtest without error, but would error out on the 2nd pass. No amount of bios tweaking would help so I had to RMA them back to Adata. The Gskill worked fine at...

IP35 pro v1.1 memory problems/ questions

Yup tried a stick in the other dimm slot too. However, the problem isn't with individual sticks, but with 2x2gb sticks. 2x1gb sticks worked fine. Looks like I found a solution though. Buff and MON over at the Abit forums, advised me to bump the Vdimm up to a minimum of 1.85v and mch 1.33v...

Thanks for the reply. I upped the MCH one notch from 1.25v to 1.29, but I still error out on test#4. I'm upping it to 1.33v and gonna try another run. What's the max voltage recommended here? I don't want to oc just run stock stable.
