  1. How many calories would you say is a fairly good daily workout?

You have to start somewhere. If you're out of shape you don't just start running marathons. If it's a good workout for him then that's exactly what he needs to be doing until he can ramp it up a bit.
  2. Left Job...never asked for computer and related items back

Not true. An ellipsis at the end of a sentence is followed by a fourth dot....
  3. Football players save toddler trapped in hot car

You've never seen this video before I take it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L91_K-s4pMM
  4. YAWTFIWWPT (WTF is Wrong with People??)

One part of sportsmanship is knowing when to dial it down when you obviously have the other team outclassed. You can still win without crushing the other team into the dirt or playing dirty.
  5. what would you do with $45k?

That's exactly the wrong attitude to have. If you want to ever retire you need to have a plan and that means saving a little money every month and not letting it burn a hole in your pocket. You're going to need a few million saved up by the time you're in your 60s (or 70s the way things are...
  6. 48÷2(9+3) =

As a mathematician and computer scientist all I can say is that you can't evaluate the expression without first providing a definition for the function 2(x). Evaluating that expression as an implied multiplication is formally incorrect. Rewriting it symbolically you get x/f(y+z). However...
  7. Going to Chicago this weekend- going to eat myself silly

Holy crap, I work across the street from you. How do you like all of the construction we're causing on California this week?
  8. I was just thinking...

It absolutely does. It alters play strategy at every descision point in the game. At every betting round you need to take this new information into account and it may subtly change how you need to bet (fold, call, raise, etc.) at each point. Adding this hand may not change *what* the...
  9. I was just thinking...

I've been making casino games for years, including poker variants. I "really understand" how poker works. It's a tough nut to crack, making a new poker game, but if you think you've done it there's money to be made there. You're welcome to try your 6 card hand and see if it sticks. Fair...
  10. would you keep a fox as a pet?

I think you're interpreting the documentary wrong. The fox domestication was a long term breeding program that has lasted for over 50 years and many generations of animals. They have specifically been breeding them to have "domesticated animal" style traits so they've become easier to handle...
  11. Entanglement - The latest web game that threatens to lower my productivity

766! The big scores aren't impossible, you just need to plan ahead and get a long path set up. For a path of distance N you get N*(N+1)/2 points. In that game I got two paths of 25 for 650 points. if I had managed to combine them into one path of 50 that would have been 1275 points.
  12. Car payments continue after the loan is paid...

Rule of thumb: whichever one instinctively sounds good for you is the one that lets the bank screw you the hardest.
  13. Entanglement - The latest web game that threatens to lower my productivity

231 on my first try. I have high levels of smartness!
  14. Math Electives

The most fun I had in a math class was on combinatorial game theory.
  15. Sick time buy back

We lost our buyback program this year too. It sounds like there were some lawsuits recently that went against employers involving overtime and buyback programs so employers are just yanking them instead of dealing with the complications. I personally never used ours. I always took my time off.
  16. Women Hid Stolen Goods Under Body Fat

It's a fake story. It's from an Onion-like parody site.
  17. Schrodinger's Cat. WTF.

Sixty Signals will explain it all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrxqTtiWxs4
  18. The best thread you'll ever see in a Computer Science forum

https://secure.csse.uwa.edu.au/run/help2140?p=np&a=197&all=y A cautionary tale to all of you aspiring computer scientists "working in groups." They are watching you. The graph in the second post is classic. Edit: Link evidently went down. I pulled this from my cache. Graph
  19. Elk nearly hit my family's car (with video)

Yeah, you have to watch out for elk (and moose) not because they are big but because they are tall. A car can handle hitting something that size as long as it hits the crumple zones in front of the car. The problem with elk is they are so tall you just take out the legs and all that weight...
  20. "Three days of the Condor" movie - why is it rated R ?

Probably would be PG-13 today. PG-13 didn't exist until 1984. Condor was released in 1975. R was the only option at the time because it's definitely not PG.
  21. "The Social Network" - I went from not caring to excited

Saw it this morning (work movie day) and expected it to be pretty lame. It was actually a good movie.
  22. Civilization V Coming This Fall

Evidently nobody remembers history. This is playing out almost exactly like the Civ 4 launch. People bitched incessantly about how bad the game was compared to 3. It's buggy. This feature is dumb. My favorite wonder is gone. My favorite civ is gone. The interface sucks. It was non stop...
  23. Civilization V Coming This Fall

Morgan Sheppard. Not as much name recognition as Nimoy buy any real geek would recognize him.
  24. How do I build my credit score?

Building your credit score means having a credit history. This means using credit to purchase things even if you don't need to. Get a credit card and use it instead of cash for planned purchases. Planning on buying a car with cash? Get a loan instead (with favorable terms of course) and pay...
  25. Word #9 on my daugter's spelling list tonight...

She's in a lot of trouble if your thread title is any indication. ;)
  26. Illuminati - WTF?

That's exactly what they want you to believe. o_O
  27. Post a pic of your computer table.

I use it to keep the mouse from scratching the shit out of the surface finish on my desk.
  28. Inception looking very promising **POSSIBLE SPOILERS INSIDE**

I thought he was the father in law, Mal's father.
  29. Just got a red light camera ticket

I got one of those recently. I was in a dedicated right turn lane with a green turn signal. The through lanes next to me had a red light though so I got a ticket. I contested by mail and am still waiting to hear back.
  30. Yard Sale Ethics Question

Why is that unethical? If I were in your situation I'd offer to sell the property for the lady, keeping anything you can get over $125 as a commission. That way she gets her money back and she knows you got as much as you could for it. As long as you're open with her about what's going on...
  31. Good calculus book

I feel old. I have the third edition. I can't believe how much calculus has changed in the last ten years!
  32. Need hiking backpack where I can store Wine bottle

They make special wine just for backpackers. It comes in a box.
  33. Why do you live here then?

If there was utopia on Earth I would be the first person to move there, but you take what you can get. I think I live in a great city/country yet it still has its problems and I'm not afraid of somebody putting voice to that.
  34. Need some job advice

    Upside down gardening.
  35. Question for you hikers out there ... on water pumps/filters. - poll

http://www.rei.com/product/653573 That's the Katadyn with the ceramic filter, but it's a little out of the price range he was looking in. A friend of mine has that one and it's a great filter as well, just expensive.
  36. Math nerds

I get 11:50 as the answer using some basic assumptions and some simple excel work. At 1:00 there is 100% probability he is at step 0, 0% probability he is at any other step. Step 0 transitions: backwards from steps 0,1,2 with probability 1/T Step 1-27 transitions generalized to N...
  37. Question for you hikers out there ... on water pumps/filters. - poll

I've never used the First Need XL, but I own the MSR and have used my cousin's Katadyn on numerous trips. I personally prefer the MSR because of the ceramic filter. It's much easier to field clean so clogging isn't an issue. That probably isn't a problem in MN but if you are filtering water...
  38. Little League - parents are nuts

Just to nitpick, how could he bat 4th with the bases loaded and two outs?
