That's what I had originally. It didn't work. There was too much solar load warming the air inside the box. The 12V power supply for the TEC was adding a lot of heat too. Maybe it could have worked if I built it inside an insulated box or something.
That was the best/cheapest pump solution I...
This was part fun, part field. I could have done a straight water loop with a radiator, but I really think I need sub-ambient cooling to keep the CPU/GPU from throttling so much that it can't perform its function.
It gets up to 95-100F here in the summer and since this is outside it is baking...
I'm not sure if a radiator would have worked for me or not. I think the ability to go below ambient is needed for this in order to keep the CPU from deeply throttling. It often gets to 95F here in the summer.
So far, so good. I've had it in direct sunlight in about 75F ambient temps and the core hasn't gone higher than about 50C. I think I have enough headroom for summer weather.
This weekend's project is to install an optical window for the camera. The plastic front is too scratched to get a good...
Okay...so I spent pretty much all day working on the custom water cooling loop with the Peltier cooler and it actually works. CPU temps are about 30C with a 100% load (10 Watt). The temps used to shoot up to 85C and then the CPU/GPU would throttle and the performance would decay to the point of...
I'm using the GPU for 1080p (wish I could do 1440p, but the integrated Intel GPU is too slow). According to CoreTemp, the whole package does 10W, but then degrades as the temps get to about 84C.
The big heatsink on the outside is on the hot side of the Peltier. If it's in direct sunlight I...
Okay, so this is a weird one. I'm creating a weatherproof live streaming / time lapse camera with a mini-PC inside an enclosed box. I figured there would be heat issues, but my first attempt didn't include any additional cooling and...as you guessed, the enclosure overheated and the CPU...
I was trying to download some torrents directly to a 64GB mini-flash drive. In other words, the flash drive would be thrashing due to the crazy read/write required of torrent download/uploads.
Anyway, the metal part of the drive was too hot to touch (probably 60-70C). Is this normal? Are...
The only reason I visited Anandtech daily was for DailyTech. I'd read Anandtech articles that interested me while on the site. Now I'll be going directly to DT every day I guess. :(
Are there any rumors about when 5TB drives will hit the market? We know that there are 1TB platters so I'm surprised that we have had to wait so long for five platter drives.
I have confirmed this as true. I was seeing right around 20k ppd and now I am seeing closer to 26-27k ppd. I wish I would have know this a month ago. So all in all, GPU3 + -SMP 11 has given me a 22k ppd boost.
I haven't really measured just the 980 by itself. That 1.2kW also includes a 24/7 PS3 cruncher. I have a 750 watt PS, but now that GPU3 is out I probably should have gone with a bigger PS so I could throw in another GTX480.
My big problem is that I don't have air conditioning so it tends to...
Okay, I got it figured out. I had to chase down the directory from the log file. I'm now showing 25,700ppd from my CPU and 16,500ppd from my GPU. Not bad...except for my electricity consumption (1200 watts for that computer, a second computer, and two 24" LCDs).
I'm running HFM right now, I'll have to play around more to see if I can get it to see my GPU3 data. I tried it yesterday and couldn't seem to get it working.
I'm running an i7 980X with SMP and a GTX480 with GPU3. Previously I've been running with -smp 12. Should I be running -smp 11 or less now that I'm also using GPU3?
At the moment I'm running -smp 11 and showing ~25,500 ppd from the 980X alone (seems kind of high; normal is closer to...
A small blurb has been added to folding.standford.edu They list May 2010 so it looks like we may have something in less than two weeks.

Time to buy your GTX 470 or GTX 480.
Thanks for the help. This thing is very fast indeed. I transcoded 40 DVDs to h264 in about 18 hours. Now that that job is over I can focus on F@H.
I also have a GTX480 in this system. Once GPU3 comes out I may be looking at 60,000ppd from one machine. That is crazy considering that I only...
I just installed the SMP client and it looks like I am getting around 2200ppd. All 12 cores are maxed out while it is running so I assume that it is doing its job.
I am concerned that something isn't right because I have heard that I should be getting more than this.
BTW, this is based on my...
Thanks for the help. I think that was enough of a memory jogger to help me out. I'll go mess around some and see what works. I'm using Win 7 64bit by the way.
Yes. I have dual monitors. One computer will be able to drive both and the other will only be able to drive one. All I want do do is switch the KB and mouse.
In two computer mode I will just manually switch one monitor to the VGA input and then switch the input devices with the KVM.
I'm looking to buy the EVGA E758-A1 along with a Core i7-980x. Will this board work with this processor straight out of the box?

I was looking at getting a simple USB KVM switch so that I can switch between two computers. Can I use it for just the keyboard and mouse and not have any displays plugged into it?
I have a dual monitor setup and I would like to be able to just switch the input devices from one screen to the...
Thanks for the help. I decided to buy an entirely new external drive since it was the exact same price as the bare drive. The drive had some bad sectors that I assume were caused by a head crash when the drive accidentally got tipped on it's side a while back.
Hello,
I have a 500GB Western Digital My Book Essential that went bad. Do I need to buy an entirely new External Drive or can I put a new HD (of any brand) into the enclosure?
Thanks
First off let me explain the image below. I took a picture of a solid white area of my monitor at f/32, I then did "Auto Levels" in Photoshop which brought out all of the dust specks on the sensor. The black dot on the right is regular dust (it moved after blowing). My question is: what is on...
Unfortunately I'm having problems installing Windows, I'm pretty sure that it is a HDD failure of some sort. I'm doing my second full format (takes about 2:30 each time). Man this sucks.
