using the supplied earbuds? The supplied earbuds TOTALLY SUCK. With them, the volume was pathetic, and would intermittantly cut out totally. I replace them with some decent Sony headphones and that totally fixed the issue. I love my Rave256 now. Great little mp3 player for the price.

(luckily I received mine two days ago...
I believe both are 16 msec response time, which should eliminate all ghosting and smearing. the 2001 has a 400:1 contrast ratio and the 2005 has a 600:1 contrast ratio (higher is better)
