I have a firewire cdrw & I play the movies burned to cd just fine. Nothing special, XP on laptop with pcmcia firewire card.
I have also burned images across the lan as well. It seems to handle it well.
FYI
I copied the i386 directory to the hd first. I ran the install from the hd instead. Also if you are overclocking try reducing the cpu to normal speed first just until the install is complete.

I had four or five Asus boards over the years. I run a CUSL2 now and am quite pleased with it.

I found Win2k more stable than Win98 at least in my case.
I use the Sony for video & an external firewire case with
my cdr burner in it. They both work well under Win2k as
