Details on the P5K-E/WIFI-AP

I had ridiculous difficulty getting my SATA hard drives to work with the P5K until I worked out that all the SATA data cables supplied with the motherboard were faulty. I'm feeling very bitter right now.

A5K won't recognise SATA hard drives

I've solved this. The problem was a fault with all three of the SATA data cables supplied with the motherboard. I found this hard to believe, so swapped the cables in and out several times to double-check. Incredible! Am very disappointed with Asus' quality control.

really appreciate your speedy reply Hopefully I can boot into XP on the SATA drive on the VIA controllers, install the Promise drivers, swap the drive over onto the Promise controller and then try booting from it. But I've an awful feeling XP will throw a tantrum that it finds itself booting...

Thanks for the suggestions! Trying each in turn: The hard drive with the errors is SATA and the spare is PATA, so I can't try the working hard drive with the same controller. chkdsk from the recovery console also gets stuck at 11% switching cables and to the other channel of the VIA...

Scanner with a mind of its own

I don't think it can be a calibration thing, as the scanner actually scans an image into Acrobat. I have a folder full of blank PDFs. I'm going with the "it's a ghost" theory.

Hi, About once every two days, my Canoscan 3000F starts up and runs a scan, just as if I'd pressed the button on the front. This can happen when I'm nowhere near the PC, and even when I'm out of the house. There's nothing anywhere near the buttons (and I don't have any cats/dogs/children)...

Best fan configuration for Coolermaster 210

after experimenting with all the different permutations, the best result is having the rear fan as an exhaust, and the "exhaust" on top of the case as an intake. I've a homemade cardboard duct pushing the fresh air onto the graphics card cooler, and another homemade duct going from the CPU fan...

in theory the exhaust on top should prevent that, but I don't have much confidence in the grille covering it - it's clearly been designed for prettiness not airflow. If I have two exhausts, and no intakes, won't that create serious impedance? where will the air come in from?

give me some ideas of what material to make a fan duct out of

So your duct leads from the Alpha to a blowhole with a fan pushing the air from the Alpha out of the case? Do you then have the other case fan sucking air in? (am about to setup a similar system in a Coolermaster 210 case, i.e. two case fans only)

Will an Alpha PAL8045 fit an A7N8X Deluxe?

don't suppose anybody knows the slowest fan (in terms of cfm) you can get away on top of an Alpha 8045 to cool a non-overclocked XP 2400+ ? Would like to use one of the really quiet Pabst or YS-Tech ones - 20dB or so but only 27cfm Dan
