You mean if I did a clean install after moving parts around? I did though I have thought about doing that again to see if it helps before spending money on a psu. I'll try that tonight
I've been dealing with this issue since September. If I don't let my PC go to sleep, it'll run with 0 issues. If I let it go to sleep, 30% of the time it either...
1) shuts down completely
2) black screens and i hit the power button the pc just shuts off. typically if I hit the power...
Yeah, the design doesn't make sense. I emailed Fractal about it and they did say all the other cases came after it - oh well. I ended up ordering a 3.5 caddy thing to place both ssds that I have
It seems like a really odd decision for Fractal to not put caddies in the back and expect to install the ssds before installing the motherboard (and I think PSU). Wondering if anyone ended up handling this differently. I thought about using velcro tape but not sure what that will do with heat...
I recently upgraded my video card to a 1080 and now feel like I might as well upgrade the rest since I can donate my current pc to my sister.
Anyway, I'm a little torn on what to do since Kaby Lake is around the corner. It seems like performance wise it shouldn't make much of a difference...
Hi thanks for such a detailed write up. Very helpful. I wanted to ask a question about the server. Does the server need to be always on because of the domain setup? Or can you log in locally on clients and use as normal? With WHS, the server could be asleep till needed but not sure how...
Mushkin, you're right that it can be my hard drives bottlenecking but I've been using the same drives for a while now. Never seen these speeds. But to answer the question, all the drives are green drives so will be slower.
Saratoga, I'm starting to think it's the cable too. That or the...
For the last month, my speeds have been really slow in between PCs. Nothing really has chanced on my end so I'm not sure what is going on
1) I've tried connecting everything directly into the router (I'm using switches) and that doesn't help
2) I tried changing the NICs (each PC has two)...
I made the change back then and my drives are still running
I also got rid of my mediasmart server and built my own. The server could have been the reason why my drives were failing too. I went through several drives during that period and lost a bit of data. 0 issues since then
This worked flawlessly for about 6 months till recently where my system doesn't even attempt to go to sleep. I can't figure it out and even after reformatting / reinstalling (not for this) I still have the same problems. I also tried switching to a different NIC (different manufacturers with...
Is there a way to confirm within Windows that AHCI is set up? I ended up redoing my WHS v1 set up along with enabling AHCI in my BIOS but I'm not sure if it's actually enabled in Windows.
Thanks for the info. Is AHCI really a requirement for hot swapping? I just did a custom WHS build and I'm pretty certain that I didn't switch it from IDE. Not that I really plan on hot swapping all that much but I'm thinking if a drive fails etc. I have my drives in a 4 bay hot swap cage but...
You know, I never even looked into this whole IDE vs AHCI. Never really messed in BIOS besides adjusting RAM timings or boot order settings so never thought about this
I did some quick searches online - it looks like it's a painless registry change in Windows to switch? Can you elaborate...
I think I got it. My video drivers were not being properly installed. Now that it is, I'm able to sleep / shut down my server. At least, it is that way for now. I guess IRQ conflicts? Otherwise, not sure how why it would seem to work better when the drive is removed from the cage.
I got this to finally work by installing the drivers on the disc. Then again, the difference with the disc is that I just navigated to the folder for the drivers. I didn't try that with the downloaded ones. I'm using the video card in my server which I don't really need up to date drivers so...
Ok I hear you on that
Running WHS v1 and it's drive extender
There are 3 other 2 tb drives all of which are wd greens that have been adjusted for idle timing so the head doesn't park excessively. The new drive is a seagate green drive
All housed in a istarusa bpn hot swap cage that is...
Thanks for the input. I posted under memory / storage so I would think hard drive would be obvious not optical
But to clarify - system = server, drive = hard drive
Thanks
So I finally figured out why my system won't shut down. When I remove the new drive, the system fully shuts down. It's only when the drive is installed that the system won't shut down. I have to do a forced shut down
Anyone know why this may be happening? It doesn't look like there are...

Not looking to do RAID. I want to add more SATA drives to my WHS server but I'm running out of ports. Would like to add something with 6 ports ideally but I have not been able to find one. And ones that have 8 usually are expensive RAID cards
It got a pretty good write up in the latest CPU mag. Wondering if anyone on here has used it.
I'm considering doing a RAID 5 setup with this card.
Also two things...
1) Bad idea to use Green drives with raid cards?
2) Do the drives all need to be the same manufacturer?
My drives keep failing in my WHS but I don't want to spend several $100 to replace the drives I have now. I read about disabling the head parking and I'm hoping that will help.
Has anyone tried this? And if so, did you have to backup your data before making the change in the firmware?
Returning the second one...
First one - didn't turn on
Second one - esata didn't work. can't get drives to connect using usb 2 speeds
Need something that will actually do what it's advertised to do. Recommendations?
I'm not sure what is going on in my server right now. It's going to be around 24 hours since the server has been sitting there stuck in boot. I suspect a drive failed but I can't tell what is actually going on. What I would like to know...
1. Will I make things worse by shutting down the...
Thanks everyone. I ended up ordering a 2 2tb WD Green drives. We'll see how it goes
frostedflakes - the utility you're referring to is only meant for specific drives right? Meaning WD doesn't support the use on all drives and voids warranty? I almost feel like it's worth taking the risk...
I'm about to order 2 2tb WD EADS drives for my HP Mediasmart server but I'm still having trouble finding a consensus on whether these drives make sense for a WHS that will be streaming media internally to my devices.
I've heard about a parking issue but not sure if it actually effects...
How do I get into WHS without using HP's console? I tried using remote desktop but got an error that I need to be given access through the Terminal Services right
Hey man. Roommate was doing something in the apartment and sparked something in one of the outlets. Like a mini fire. When I got home all my devices were off and my HDMI switch that was drawing power from a Tripp Lite surge protector was fried
I don't think a UPS will prevent this but would...
Ok thanks guys. Appreciate all the info
JackMDS - yeah, I'm leaning towards getting a HP Mediasmart server for more than just backing up my systems. I also want to mirror some folders that are important to me and also use it for sharing out media to other devices without having to leave my...
I'm confused :) Sounds like I can given your comments RebateMonger.
MalVeaux / mpilchfamily - Why are you guys saying no? Unless I didn't make myself clear
