Just installed a new PS in my comp and having probs...

For the future, you might find it easier to run the system for awhile first, and then quickly disassemble the HSF from the CPU once you shut down. With the system still warm, the HSF should come away easily (thermal paste tends to stick a lot more when it's cold).

Non-Gamer card - Need recommendation

Mainsteam graphics card are differentiated solely on basis of gaming performance these days - if you are not gaming, go for the least expensive PCIe card you can find. It will look exactly the same at the more expensive cards in 2D applications.

Overclock causing hard drive data corruption?

Yeah, certain boards lack proper functioning sata locks on ports 1 & 2, so you are better going for 3 & 4. Regardless, however, if you are not Prime5 *and* memtest stable, then you are risking data corruption - period. You need to lower your overclock (or raise voltage, etc. see Zebo's...

Best SocketA performance?

If you can find a cheap XP-M for a reasonable price, go for it - but I know that's easier said than done. I'd second the S754-Sempron combo for $100 - they overclock great, and would be faster than the XP-M upgrade.

Problem seems to be that that the highest-end AGP model Sapphire ever made was the X800XTPE (which is obviously discontinued). There closest contenders are the nearly as old X850pro (definitely much slower than yours - they don't seem to have made an AGP X850XT), and the X1600Pro (again...

Question about 1t vs 2t for mem

A64 2800+ are typically Newcastle cores (although it could be an old clawhammer, I suppose). My Newcastle 2800+ does max 2.34Ghz stably with a bump in voltage to 1.585V (i.e. a 30% oc on 5.5% overvolt - not too bad). Some people report success taking their Newcastles much higher (e.g. 2.6+)...

OCing Sempron 3100+, Paris or Palermo core???

Here's a later article from X-bit (04/04/05) that dicusses the difference between Palermo and Paris semprons. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/sempron-3100e.html As you see, they got their Palermo to just under 2.7GHz, while the earlier Paris would only do 2.5GHz.

Overclocking a Barton 3000+

What BIOS version are you running? My old (unlocked) barton 2500+ is sitting in my son's A7V8X, and I don't have an option to run the fsb above 166 ("333" in the bios). For that matter, I don't recall being able to go above the 12.5 multi on that board, but I'll need to double-check that...

That's odd ... but it may be due to how the board caculates the decimal value of the divider. There's a real quirk in how boards calculate timings. The 2/3 divider could be 0.6666..., or it could be only 0.665 (i.e. 266/400). You can calculate effective memory speed by the following formula...

Low 3DM 05 score w/ X800 XT

You might want to re-install the CCC, and verify you are running at 8X AGP without AA/AF forced. Most people run 3Mark with everything adjusted to performance settings, to boost their score (the default setting is balanced). You can always choose not to load CCC at startup if you don't like...

Worth upgrading a 9500 pro to a 6600GT ?

The 6600GT is a good card, but it's not that much of an upgrade (I'd estimate ~50-60% faster on average, depending on the game and setting). I went from a 9500pro to a 9800pro (slightly slower than a 6600GT) and was disappointed with the upgrade. The 6800GS is only about ~$40 more around...

CPU/RAM divider help please

Try easing off slightly on the CPU freq, down to 298 or something. I found on my S754 Asus K8N board that my high-end Corsairs don't like running at 200Mhz (or higher) with any divider - they will only do 200+ stably when running 1:1. Likely a board/mem incompatibility, as trying 3 diff BIOSes...

Who's Overclocked a 2800+ 754??

My 2800+ Newcastle can do 2.34GHz max with a bump in voltage to 1.575 - not Prime95 stable beyond that. I routinely run HTT=3, 290x8 = 2.32GHz, with the 2/3 mem divider (~193MHz) 2x512MB Corsair 3200LL, Asus K8N (Nforce3 250 board) with a Zalman CNPC7000B-Cu cooler.

Happy to help out another Asus K8N user. :) A few suggestions: HTT: definitely stick to HTT=3 if you are overclocking the fsb above 200Mhz. This board is known to have problems when hypertransport link >800Mhz (i.e. don't go above 200x4 if you can help it). Most boards can do up 1000Mhz...

Is there a way to set the speed of the stock cooler on a GPU?

QFT. I do a similar thing on my X800XTPE with ATI Tools (i.e. lowered idle from 67% to 50%, and can barely hear it over the case). Had a neglible affect on temps, but your experience might be different with the 7800GS. Just experiment with Rivatuner with an eye on minimizing temp...

Lower Res and Higher Settings or Higher Settings and Lower Res?

As a general rule, I prefer lower settings in order to run at native resolution on LCD. I find non-native just too fuzzy looking - and not in a good AA sort of way :)

754 vs 939 processor clock for clock

Also running on equivalent chipsets between the two boards? If so, I don't think you'd see any real performance difference between s754/s939 A64s at same rated speed, aside from the lack of dual channel, as you pointed out.

Excellent point - I agree that a lot of the problem (in general) is likely to lie with the circuitry, and that can affect both integrated & cards. But integrateds are also likely to find themselves in a worse environment than cards do in this regard - i.e. I imagine there is extra noise...

Seems like a reasonable plan, as that P4 is likely holding you back in newer games. And I agree, not much point in upgrading further along AGP path (I'm a happy AGP X800XTPE person mself :) - but that will only hold me over until my next system rebuild)

Are your chipset AGP drivers installed? Likely source of the problem. Run 3Dmark05 to determine if your score is appropriate (should be well over 6000 with performance settings, if everything setup correctly). If your score is lower, something is not right - try re-installing AGP drivers...

Yeah, same here ... my s754/Newcastle/X800XTPE still has some life in it! :) Also agree on the X1900. Looks like those pixel shader processors will help it gain an edge., judging from early reviews. Maybe someone should start a poll of AGP/PCIe results among the ATI X/X1 and Nvidia 6/7...
