XGA vs SXGA

A 14" laptop screen with higher resolution than XGA is always a SXGA+ which is 1400x1050, or UXGA which is 1600x1200. A SXGA+ screen running XGA will not be as clear as a XGA running XGA. LCD's are best at their native resolution. I am not sure I understand your final question, but the laptop...

Radeon mobility 7500 vs mobility 9000

FWIW, I seem to recall from previous T40 threads that the 7500 scores about 3900 points in 3dMark01, while the 9000 scores about 5000 pts.

How much video memory for a non-gamer's system?

If your buying a mobo just get one with intregrated graphics. Intel Extreme Graphics 2 works fine for me at the office, despite it's very bad rumour.

Wireless network cards: PCI or USB?

Don't know. I have a Linksys G pci in my desktop, and it works fine. Drops connection from time to time when there's no activity (resumes right away), but that's probably user error :)

Got wireless (finally): Network activity question

I finally jumped into the wireless era. And it's great. One small thing though. Every few minutes there is some activity. Not much, just 30 Kpbs for a few seconds. But, damn it, I want to know what it is. I checked the running processes in task manager, and nothing looks crappy. So can anyone...

No. The Thinkpad Express models are brand new afaik. The differences to the 2 machines on your linked page is that the express model has a 40gb 5400rpm drive and 1 year warrany, while the other has a 30gb 4200rpm drive and 3 year warranty. You could try and find two similar equipped models, and...

Ibm's different thinkpad T41 models?

The difference is the warranty. The Express only has 1 year, and the other has 3 years like every other T-series. Longer warranty is not a bad idea when dealing with laptops.

Any opinion on the resolution of 15" IBM screens...?

For a 15" definately go sxga+. But if you do decide on the xga why not just get the 14" model. As a bonus the laptop will be a little bit smaller (and should be cheaper too).

IBM's new APS hard drive protection in T41 and R50

FWIW cNet has previews on both of them, but they really don't say much. The R50 looks like a very good laptop, it's not so bulky anymore. I hope the prices won't go up as I'm ready to buy.

IBM Thinkpad X31 question

Answer (also follow the link in that thread). Out of interest, why don't you have your T40 anymore? I am debatting with myself wether I should buy the X31 or the T40, such a hard decision. Edit: This thread might be useful too.

Heh, I discovered the same after I got my Sonata up and running. I just use ctrl+f1, this way the cat can't turn it on (well not easily anyway) :) And it's actually a good idea to do it, seeing as the door is somewhat flimsy.

HD? There was something about a certain psu whining with sata drives. But you are using a PIII mobo, so it's probably not that problem you have. But you could have a conflict with a hardware part and the psu.
