Color Temperature questions. Best Color Reproduction?

Natural daylight has a colour temperature of around 5000K - 6500K, depending on time of day. If it's overcast it can be a little higher, say 7500K. (Typical light bulbs are < 3000K). So setting a monitor to 9300K is much bluer than anything you find in nature.

why can't LCD's achieve the contrast ratio of print?

Actually, most printed images have a much poorer contrast range than a monitor (LCD or CRT). If you use a package like Photoshop for image editing you can 'soft proof' your image to the printer profile, and it is surprising how poor printers are.

LCD monitors that do non-native rez well?

Bear in mind that if you drop to 1024x768, everything will be stretched vertically since it's a different aspect ratio. I sometimes do this in games and it's quite noticeable, although you soon forget about it.

Parents just bought me an lcd

I'd strongly recommend trying the LCD you've got with some games, before making a decision. The ghosting is a real issue for some people but not for others. For example, I've played fast-paced FPS games on a 40ms (yes 40!) LCD, and had no problem. I guess I'm lucky :-)

UK - Cheap (under £100) case with at least 3 fans?

Try the Thermaltake cases from http://www.aria.co.uk/ or http://www.scan.co.uk/ They start at under £80 and have 5 quiet fans, with a speed controller. They're incredibly solid. Try not to be put off by the looks - the one I got from Scan isn't too bad!

Do I really NEED my 9800 Pro now that I'm switching to a LCD??

I believe there's a lot of rubbish talked about fps in games. If the game runs at a constant 60fps or a constant 100fps, you won't be able to tell the difference - remember that TV runs at 60fps (50 in the UK). Of course the rate is never constant, so a game that shows an average of 60fps may...

It lets you change your hardware without having to re-register. It doesn't report to MS what software you have installed; what searches you are doing; your job, income, 5 previous addresses and those of all your family members, every time you hit the return key ;-)

Motherboard is Asus A7N8X. Win 98SE never gave me problems with nVidia cards, and I'm not changing my OS just because the ATI drivers are pathetic. I'm certainly not changing to that hugely bloated piece of spyware that's XP (especially since I change hardware quite a lot). I may go for Win2k...

That's not true in my experience - of the 5 or 6 people at work who are into FPS games, only 1 or 2 have much interest in multiplayer. All of them are concerned about how a game plays in single-player mode. I was running it at reasonably high settings (can't remember the details). I think...

3 times now I've submitted tech support requests to ATI via their website. The second time I reminded them that I HAD read the FAQs and asked if I could have a proper response. The third time I told them in no uncertain terms that I was getting fed up with automated, unhelpful responses...

I may switch to Win2k at some point, although I'll not do it just because ATI have poor drivers. I'll certainly not switch to a bloated piece of Microsoft spyware that won't let me upgrade my PC without re-registering (I'm sure you know the one I mean) ;-)

Yes, I have the correct monitor inf file installed, and Win98 recognises it. The graphics card drivers are the latest ATI Catalyst 3.1 (a couple of days old). I tried HZTool also, but it had no effect - the ATI control panel still said it was setting 85Hz, and the monitor still said it was...

I finally understand the ATI driver "troubles".

The fact that I have to jump through hoops just to change drivers, plus many other problems, puts me off ever buying an ATI card again (now running a 9700 Pro). My old GeForce card never gave me any of these problems.
