Yes, your notebook wireless uses standards, a/b/g that are just that--standards--and if the wireless router is a a/b/g you will be able to connect (properly configured).

Wireless ve Wired? Poll

Wireless is always slower if it is secured with WEP or esp with WPA....if you're not using any security, then yeah, they'll be the same. No way is wireless the same speed if it is locked down...do Pre-N if you'd like, its not as fast.

If I do not broadcast my SSID, am i secure from outsiders?

I think besides not broadcasting ssid, mac filtering, doing wep/wpa... The best thing to do is narrow your DHCP scope. Lets say I have 3 computers....2 desktops and 1 wireless....the scope should be 4 computers in size...(includes the router) so the scope would be 192.168.0.1-4....that way...

Windows XP Pro SP2 and VPN (virtual private network question)

No i don't think its possible....you have to log in first without vpn, then do the vpn once logged in.... Somebody else chime in, cause this would be a real nice feature if it is possible...but I haven't seen it.... if you 'dial' in like you said....(which to me isn't vpn)....maybe you...

IBM ThinkPad wireless LAN + Windows Updates = ARRRGGH

Did you install just 'critical updates'....no drivers from windows update right? I would 'update driver' from ibm's website for the card or use rollback...windows critical updates shouldn't hose your wireless...I work on a lot of A31s and haven't seen this...although I have seen wireless be a...

Need help with wireless home network

make sure you share the hard drive with a share name, and make sure everyone can access it...make the name such as 'share$'....the $ means it is hidden unless someone can type it in first...map to that name as a drive share.... on each computer, either on c drive or a folder, right...

nweaver---are you the workgroup guy or what? At this point, I think we are just talking about setups, nothing about what 2k3 costs...I think that is inferred. Terminal Services is really handy as well from remotely (try doing that from a workgroup)....although they can change it, comcast...

The DC has nothing to do with internet connection other than handing out an IP addy....like I said, the 'modem' is hooked into a wireless router...with a piggyback switch....and just every computer is plugged into the switches....if the DC is down, the only difference is I can't see my share...

Problem with Belkin Pre-N Router

Even if DHCP is set to forever, once that computer is off the network it will reassign it if there are no other addresses left for a new computer.

More info! What ip addy when you dos prompt ipconfig? what is it hooked up to? dsl/comcast, a router, etc... WLAN is wireless, why do wireless if it is wired? what is the status of your card? (enabled, connected, etc.) does it say cable is disconnected? ...etc... Is it connecting to...

Getting randomly disconnected from the internet

not enough info man... i'd say its a comcast/dsl issue, like the modem...etc....but have no clue cause you don't give enough info...have you tried a 2nd computer? have you tried your system on someone else's connections?

Wireless bridge antennas

I have the belkin....much better reception than the netgear I used to have (which died)....I have both antennas sideways but don't know if it matters...I get 45mps everywhere in the household, 1500 sq place....get 30+ over at neighbors....I'd recommend it. Has the WPA as well

why do you want to do this? I would just disable that and run it 24x7....wake on is used for clients normally. Pushing patches and stuff...

Hi Experts, Remote Desktop Printing Problem

on the session to the server, you have to actually set up the printer....just pretend the rdp is your computer and set it up like that....actually go to 'add printer' and such and install the driver....drive must be installed on the server for the printer check box to work.

WHAT SETTINGS DO I USE WITH MY ROUTER? I AM SO CONFUSED!

it's kind of hard to disable the linksys firewall 100%....when using a router that has a firewall...its good to use only viruscan on clients....don't use the entire suites on the individual computers...the linksys firewall is hardware based which makes it fast and it takes the software firewall...

There's not a whole lot to it....if the machine can run 2000 WS ok, then it can run server....just install server, at the dos prompt type 'dc promo' and it will install all domain services on that box...if its under 10 clients, a normal slow 500-1000 mhz machine can handle it...you'll be totally...

The best thing at home about having a small DC instead of just a workgroup, is you can have a share drive, roaming profiles, and always have easy access to items such as drives and printers. Workgroups are fine at home, but when you get 4 kids with 4 computers, and 2 more in the kitchen/family...

Wireless Network seems to forget its settings....

try changing the power settings for the wireless nic to 'always on'.... right click on 'my computer' select 'manage' and in device manager, right click on wireless and select 'properties'....power management is the last tab on top. Hope this helps, reply if it does.

"Path too deep" Can not transfer files

just a little fyi that is worth mentioning... if you should ever backup on cd, make sure that the path doesn't have too many folders, nothing is readable after i think 2 folders deep....just a small thought, good luck, just accessing/transfering, you should have no problems with deep...

it's exactly like windows 2003 server, or XP with XP visuals turned off. Just change your xp to 'best performane' and make all themes windows classic, and volla, that's what it looks like.

XP Pro or XP

it's basically a money issue..... XP Pro should always be purchased if possible, but it is much more expensive than home. if remote desktop is a consideration, go pro for sure.....if remote desktop isn't a priority, save some money and get home.

does this sound like a dying hard drive?

win98 run scan disk and see what happens. if XP/2k go to a command prompt and run checkdisk with repair switch, so c:\chkdsk /r you'll have to reboot, it will isolate the bad blocks and work a lot of the times, should be run at least once a month, so you can see bad blocks coming, prepare for...

do the 2 drive thing, that is easiest....if from the same boot you want 98/xp choosing, win 98 must be installed first however, no matter.... and yes, saying 'use compatibility mode' doesn't work 99% of the time, esp with proprietary business software. your brother's company is hitting a wall...

Please help with XP/CDROM issue!!

if anything is in over 2 folders down from root, cd's won't save your stuff.... if you just saved stuff from some directories, and lets say it was c:\files\xp\mydocuments\...... there won't be anything there....i recommend only using one folder for each category when saving to a cdr Don't...

if you don't overclock and want rock solid stability, and you use a pentium, I always get my clients intel boards....never have any problems like you mention (at least not yet)....i use intel boards at home, and they are very very rock solid. Used to work there and they are tested...

Best Way To Get Files From Desktop to Laptop

caveman, this would be a good opportunity to get into networking.... I'd recommend getting at least a small switch, and 2 cat5 cables, plug both into switch....with this configuration you'd have to put cable/dsl router into a 2nd nic on your desktop and do ICS.... or get a cable/dsl router...

Got a new rig, and it's great! Well, except for...

go to www.megagames.com or something like that and get the 'no cd patch' for your games. It is a .exe that replaces your original so no cd needs to be in the drive. (be sure to put your original exe in a folder so you have it just in case).....don't advocate piracy, but the right not to have...

I'm getting ready to build my first computer; thoughts?

i'm a network engineer, and for the small price, i would always install a floppy drive. ignore what anyone else says. It only costs a few bucks, and it's really annoying helping someone who doesn't have one installed....of course there are workarounds, but it's always nice to have it there.
