If you've got an .edu email you can get it even cheaper Here
They've got both Pro and Home (32 bit or 64 whatever you choose).
I figure why not go with Pro, although I just started using my copy of Vista Ultimate on my new comp so I don't know if I'll even buy Win 7 even at such a good...
For sure I'll have fun with it....although I already had to burn some $ on it...for victory's sake. Late last night I bought another 2 gig of RAM (for a total of four....not going to go over that). And a super cheap 9600 GSO which was like 34 bones after rebate
BTW: As Borat would say "Grrrreat Success!"
I got Vista Ultimate installed without a hitch! After trying all kinds of silly things finally.
Bad thing is I cant tell you exactly what change made the difference...but it is one of two.
I updated the XW8200 BIOS (it was hard as hell to...
Yeah I know...I'm not really ragging on the OS...just frustrated. But, obviously want to try it out considering I've got a new computer and two copies of it sitting around.
No USB stick installed. I am installing with a USB keyboard and mouse though. I thought about it....maybe time to go back to basics and install with IDE and PS2 mouse/keyboard.
I have tried two HD's...the one WD 250 gig SATA the box came with and a new 500 gig Seagate SATA. It was odd...
Kevbot...thx for joining the thread....really constructive comments there chief.
SS: basically the errors seemed to be inconsistent and I didn't write them all down :)
The MB only has two SATA slots (I think) and I'm installing from both my SATA DVD drive and SATA HDD. I wonder if using...
Spent all night trying each stick individually. Neither worked on their own, but neither gave the same error in the same spot either. This thing is turning out to be a major chore.
XP installs...I think I'm sticking to that for the rest of this comps miserable life :)
(course it's better...
I dont' know...it takes Registered DDR2...I found some Kingston on newegg but it's realatively costly. Hopefully they'll return it if it doesnt work. I don't have anywhere local that would have old Registered DDR2 server RAM.
Maybe I'll pop out a stick and try installing the OS to find out...
Been using XP pro for years on new builds, fresh reformats. Must have installed it 50 times at least between new builds for friends on all sorts of different comps over the years. Never had one problem.
A buddy gave me his HP XW8200 workstation (Dual Xeon 3.4, 2 gig ram, 250 gig SATA HDD)...
I realize I'm sorta having a conversation with myself but... :)
WTF is up with Vista. I just installed XP Pro on the system with zero problems...took 10 minutes. So, at least I know now that it's not a hardware issue...makes things much easier.
Stupid Vista....although I'm going to try...
So I'm not really making any progress so far. Good news though, the boot list problem seems to be fixed.
I fixed the bootmgr problem by rebuilding the boot file in command prompt only to run into another weird "unexpected windows error" down the line that is terminating the install.
I'm...
I don't think so, I'll have to check after work.
The computer was working/booting into a previously installed version of XP64 from the SATA HDD drive prior to me attempting to install Vista.
At this point I'm actually getting different errors that wont even let me install windows "windows...
Actually already tried that. Does the same thing but tries to boot from HD and just sits there. Does not boot into windows and does not move onto the second option (DVD ROM at this point).
I might try and babysit the installation. Once Vista finishes it's first copying/expanding files...
Hello all
My buddy just gave me his HP XW8200 workstation. I've got a copy of Vista Ultimate that's been sitting around I'm now trying to install.
DVD-ROM is IDE
HDD is a 250 gig SATA
I've set the BIOS to boot CD first then to HDD.
Vista started setting itself up no problem...then...
Hey all..I posted this a while back in general and didn't get much if any response...let see how it does here ;)
Sad story...my most up to date build is an old P4 2.4 Ghz, 1.5 gigs of RAM, and a GF 6800 non-ultra vid card. Just havent built anything in forever...(mostly cause I'm broke)...
Yeah, it's got one PCI-e (and a couple PCI-x which will obviously go un-used)
Was thinking about something like a GTS 250. Or is that a waste?
something like this
Sad story...my most up to date build is an old P4 2.4 Ghz, 1.5 gigs of RAM, and a GF 6800 non-ultra vid card. Just havent built anything in forever...(mostly cause I'm broke)
Anyway...my buddy is giving me a HP XW8200 workstation that he doesn't want.
Dual Xeon 3.4

Just jumped at refurb at Dell with 20% but am doubting myself now.
My current comp was last built in 2003 and I think I got totally desperate when I saw these deals....really dont know though. I think the deal stinks in hindsight....I want to cancel it.
Specs:
-- Inspiron Desktop 518...
Oh, and on an off question for those reading this (don't want to start another thread)
I'm outputting my comp to my 32" TV at 720p (as a second monitor).
If I'm playing a DVD with something like PowerDVD is that then playing in 720p on my TV if I have it maximized to full screen?
Thanks
I've finally got my computer next to my receiver and new HD TV.
Problem is my Audigy 2 ZS doesn't have an optical out. Right now I'm running the audio from the out (headphone looking jack) in the back split to RCA analogue. Obviously it's not giving me Dolby Digital to my receiver.
What...
I don't want to pay to have the cable company install a new outlet, and don't want to run coax from the basement. But, I do want some HD cable content like I get in the basement on my other TV. Getting some OTA stuff but want more.
I've got my computer hooked up via VGA so SlingBox seemed...
Just got a cheap 32" Westinghouse and it's side by side my Dell 2005fpw. I wanna run these things dual screen but I've got no option for 1280x720 for a rez (GF 6800). I can get it to run dual (2005fpw DVI, Westinghouse VGS), but the rez is too high for the LCD and doesn't fit the whole thing...
I've had this happen before on a different comp where I installed a wireless network adapter and their software (in this case D-Link Air manager thing). I think it auto disables Windows Zero config and takes over as the manager. But, it wont see my wireless network or any others now. Tried...
Yep, for HTIB's I would only go with Onkyo or Yamaha. They are both quality and very nicely priced. On Onkyo's site you can sometimes find great deals on their refurb HTIB's.
Westy 32"
Anyone have an opinion on this TV. I know it's a totally cheap LCD. I looked at it side by side to some better brands and the colors aren't quite as good...but acceptable to me. Especially cause I got it for $549 new at a local place.
F'it. I'm gettin a cheap azz (but nice) Acer 22" monitor to play Xbox and watch movies on. I'll spend a bit of the extra money on a comfy bean bag that I can sit close to it with ;)

Two pretty popular nicely priced Acer LCD's..going to get one for the bedroom for xbox and some TV.
Which one should I get? They are nearly identical. One has 800:1 contrast, one 700:1. One has speakers, one doesn't (not necessasry for me).
Any other differences I don't see...
Hey guys...semi-long time poster on the computer forums here...but not on these new subdivisions...
I need some recs on seriously dirt cheap 37" + HDTV's. It would be going in a bedroom and mostly playing Xbox360 and watching some upscaled DVD's with my current HT system.
Was looking at...
Short blurb...no one cares....but I never thought it would come to this
Basically I've stopped PC gaming all together (except CS:S sometimes). It's too frickin' expensive...it seems like my rig played games good for about two years only....now it just plain stinks and I cant even run...
Hello all,
I have a question. My wife is working remote from home now and we need to get a business account that will have a static IP (for VPN purposes). My question is this...
I'm on limewire and IRC occasionally dloading a song or southpark episode here and there....should I be more...
Sweet, with the existence of that cable I wont have any reservations about the TV. For some reason I could only find a silly converter box that was like $300, I guess I didn't look hard enough.
Now I know where to find the $5 cables. Thanks!
Hello all, it's been a while for me even browsing these boards again. Glad the same good advice is still being given out!
I'm getting a new TV, but the problem is there is no VGA or DVI input on the thing. Only 2 HDMI inputs (and other basics).
I looked a bit on newegg figuring quite a...
Partition Magic actually has an option for "Install another operating system" that creates another partition for installing an OS.
What's the advantage of this? Anyone use that option?
