I haven't played a lot of recent FPS' outside of RTCW and MOHAA so correct me if I'm wrong here but aren't all those Open GL games (with the exception of Halo)? I'll take these benches with a grain of salt for that reason alone. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch now ;)

I run my 9600 AIW Pro @ 470/760 in games ;) Of course, I don't have 8 pipes or a 256-bit memory bus but my chip/mem frequencies are higher than yours so neener-neener!!:P
My A/T DSM doesn't roll back at all at idle, only forward. At an incline I don't even need to use the brake for the car to sit still. Of course, on flat road it definitely needs the brake to prevent it from rolling forward ;)
I've always had better results doing a full reformat and reinstall of Windows than with just a driver cleaning utility. If I really don't feel like doing a reformat, I'll use a driver cleaner and check through the registry and .dll's myself to make sure there's no trace of the previous card's...

You should try the DSL here on campus. It's pathetic. They have one DSL connection for 6 buildings. Yeah, one pipe running between 6 buildings. It gets pretty freakin slow around here sometimes (when it even works)
