Seti@Home - The end of a Classic

SETI was my first look into DC also way back in the day. I've crunched more then a few work units myself. Was never into it hard-core like some of you but I always looked at it fondly. It was definately good. It really was the standard by which all other DC systems were judged. Oh Well...

Virtual PC on a 1.33GHz powerbook

Ive used virtual PC 5 on a 1ghz 17" powerbook g4 with a gig of ram and it still ran like a turd, If running windows was that important id invest a tiny bit more money, not biu VPC, and instead buy a slim lightweight intel or AMD based notebook used off of ebay or the forums here.

How come no sff's use laptop-sized optical drives?

I personally would only pay the premium for the devices that use the lappy hardware if space and noise were FAR more important than preformance. which. to me they arent.

Tablet pc for college:good or bad?

I'd say pen and paper. If your pen runs out of ink usually a classmate will have a spare you can use. If your Tablet PC craps out on you you're SOL and back to using pen and paper anyway. Never seen a pad of paper crash and lose all my notes.. :D

What drew you to a SFF system?

After hauling my 85lb+ watercooled full tower up 2 flights of stairs to my frien's room for a weekend of gaming and downloading i promised myself that i was never going to build another huge system again. lol. All that severe excess and i can do everything with a SFF that i could with my monster...

D2OL - Roughly 30 machines from a victorious stalemate...

As of right now im making a comeback tour. I'll have 1 P3-700 and a G4-450 here at work, and 2x athlon XP's at home. Might even install Gentoo Linux on my modded xbox :)

Athlon XP 2100 heat issue

Is yours a palomino core? The palomino cores ran REAL hot, but if i were you id scrape all that thermal pad bullcrap off of the HSF and get yourself some Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound and apply that.. other then that,, make sure the HSF is sitting absolutely flat on the CPU.

Why does SETI mysteriously close ?

*nods* most dont know how to kill a service anyway :-) or even know what a task manager is for that matter. And its totally stealth so they dont know its running. Good to do at work *wink wink* although i wouldnt do a thing like that

SETI: 100 WUs !

Congrats :-) but if you wanna crunch hard just get yourself a 1.6 or a 2.2 p4 Dell laptop on eBay for about $1700 less than your powerbook and crunch much faster. i did a l ittle experiment, a co-worker of mine just bought the new 17" 1ghz G4 Powerbook,, with all the trimmings. she paid $3200...
