  1. Choice of running platform (pavement, grass, treadmill)

I like a little barefoot running, but I'd generally rather do it on asphalt than grass. Debris can't hide on asphalt.
  2. 100,000 miles for AT

15 miles for me this week, plus Barfo's missed 1. 34,078
  3. what workout pants do you wear?

I have these and they are awesome. I'll wear them out running with just boxer briefs down to around -15C before I need another layer. I've had them for a couple of years and wear them around the house on lazy days (which is a lot, since I work from home) and they haven't shown any signs of...
  4. 100,000 miles for AT

    I think you mis-added there... </pedantic> :)
  5. 100,000 miles for AT

Just on the other side of the lake here (Toronto), it cooled off significantly in the evening. It was quite comfortable to run at around 22:00. But it was dark of course. I guess that doesn't work so well for your trail running.
  6. Marathon 101 training log

    I'll read it.
  7. 100,000 miles for AT

14 miles for me this week. 33,994
  8. 100,000 miles for AT

    20 miles this week. 33,890
  9. What's the consensus on Tabata Intervals?

If you can do 3 sets in 15 minutes, you're probably not going hard enough.
  10. sweat headbands

I never thought about it, but that's a good enough reason not to wear one. The raccoon effect from sunglasses is bad enough :P
  11. is there a point to slow and long cardio?

I think that's the key. Exercise isn't necessarily a priority for everyone and if they had a choice between pushing harder or not exercising, they might choose not exercising. Sure, maybe it'd be more productive to work a bit harder for much less time and then go and use the extra time to...
  12. 100,000 miles for AT

12 for me over the last week. 33,736
  13. 100,000 miles for AT

I've been having trouble with my knee and haven't really been able to go farther than 10k at a time for the past 3 weeks or so, but I'm not (all that) old, so it happens to all of us :( 32 miles over said period. 33,685
  14. Vibrams vs. Racing Flat

I have wondered this myself. With all the demand for new minimalist shoe designs, why aren't people just switching to the flats that already exist? While I haven't run in flats, there are a couple things that I'm assuming are different: Durability. I'm often told that flats don't last...
  15. Marathon 101 training log

Hmm, that didn't happen to me when I ran my first marathon last year. I ran around my goal pace for the first 10k, then couldn't help speeding up and by the end, while tiring, I was still going slightly faster than my goal pace.
  16. Nike Free 3.0

My guess would be you probably want a 44. If your feet are slightly larger than mine, going down a whole size seems a bit too risky. But I wish they had a 43.5 :P
  17. Nike Free 3.0

Are you suggesting that Free Runs are minimal shoes? I have a pair of Free Run 2s and they have about as much eva as a regular trainer and almost as big a drop. The only real noticeable difference between them and a regular trainer, as far as I can tell, is that they're a fair bit flexier. I...
  18. Nike Free 3.0

They seem to have coupon codes out fairly frequently. I think I got 30% off my pair or something like that. You can usually find the current codes at http://www.retailmenot.com/view/terraplana.com What size do you wear in vffs? A 43 KSO fits me quite snugly. At 44, I wouldn't risk going...
  19. Nike Free 3.0

I have a pair. I basically got them for winter running when my KSOs just couldn't keep the snow/slush out. They're thin, but not nearly as much so as KSOs. The uppers are also less flexy so they don't hug your foot the way a vff does. They are zero drop, have wide forefeet and are pretty...
  20. I'm running a marathon, tips?

Congrats YG! My dad just ran a marathon in which he was also basically just managing injuries more than anything else (back and knee) and he managed to push through, but he was not comfortable. That's great that things cleared up for you during the race.
  21. 100,000 miles for AT

22 miles for me over the last 2 weeks. 33,262
  22. Anybody running Boston?

Yeah, I was pretty surprised. I actually jogged about a half k with my dad at 17m and felt a little bad about it, but I think it pepped him up a good bit. Near the end though it was really bad. Big groups of friends running around with signs getting people to cheer for the runners, parents...
  23. Quickest way to hit the ground running (barefoot)?

I can only offer my own experiences, but VFFs are the best minimal shoes that I've tried. When I have a suitable surface available (my sidewalk in warm weather is fine for short runs) I try to do supplementary barefoot running as it makes me much more careful about my form and leaves my feet...
  24. Anybody running Boston?

I didn't see the finish because I was out at the 17-mile mark watching my Dad but I'll bet it was exciting. What I did see though I didn't find particularly inspiring. There were a lot of people running without bibs, some apparently doing the whole thing, some just doing part or running with a...
  25. Anyone want to be my virtual gym buddy?

SC, may I suggest that you also publicly shame him in this thread when he misses? :P
  26. 100,000 miles for AT

I haven't posted my mileage for 5 weeks! Since then I've slacked my way to 50 miles or so. Slowly starting to increase again after a slow winter though. 32,962
  27. Anybody running Boston?

I'll be at the game Saturday not Monday, so there'll be time to do what I need to do at the hotel before going out to find a spot. And I'm not planning on drinking large amounts of beer :P I figured it would be pretty packed. At any rate, my dad will be coming in late enough (over 4 hours...
  28. Anybody running Boston?

Me either. I ran my first marathon last year and watched my qualifying time tick by at about the 32km mark :P
  29. Anybody running Boston?

Wow, running a marathon at 60 is an accomplishment in itself. To run marathons for 40 years is even bigger, and doing it at Boston? That's quite something. I'll keep an eye out for him, I'm sure he will be getting some publicity.
  30. Anybody running Boston?

I'm going to the sox game on Saturday too :) My dad somehow managed to become one of the VIPs that gets trotted out on field before the game (he's running). Also, they're playing the Jays and I'm from Toronto so that'll make it double fun, especially if both teams keep playing the way they've...
  31. Anybody running Boston?

I just found out that I'm going to be there watching and I figured it'd be cool if I could spot some of the ATHF running stars.
  32. Runners: What sunglasses do you wear?

I once ran a half with my glasses on top of my head the whole way because the sun I was expecting never came out :P
  33. Runners: What sunglasses do you wear?

Just a cheapish pair (~$35 iirc) from mec. The only real problem I've ever had with them is that they sometimes fog up under extreme conditions (heavy rain and wind at near freezing temperatures, and the odd time in really cold weather with the wind at my back). More expensive glasses probably...
  34. Soxfan's P90x workout log

When I was starting out, I would put my big toe on the ground and push with it. You get some force, but not too much or it starts to hurt. I don't really understand how you'd use a chair as an aide, but anything you could do with a chair, couldn't you also do with the floor? (I'm 6'2" and my...
  35. p90x equipment questions

A low pull-up bar is fine, otherwise door-hanging bars wouldn't be so popular. I'm 6'2 and my ceiling is 6'8 and I get along fine, although I can't bring my head as high over the bar as I'd like.
  36. 100,000 miles for AT

I would think so. If can't run then you are doing the next best thing... Also, iirc, RedDawn used to contribute elliptical mileage.
  37. Does P90X work?

    More or less:
  38. Does P90X work?

Some people actually enjoy long distance running ;) But yeah, p90x and running are totally different things.
  39. Kamper starts running in VFFs

Just 15 again this week, but with the longest run up to nearly 7.5k. It's been warm enough to run a few times in the KSOs again, which feels better than the Evos. Some stats since I began last summer: barefoot: 40k KSOs: 125k Evos: 72k trainers: 197k (pretty much all long runs that I can't...
