    FWIW. I backed up LOTRROTKext. onto one DL disk with only about 5% shrinkage, after removing superfluous goo like menus, extra sound tracks, and the 20 minute credits. Came out very well. Looks 100% on my 8' screen.

    They didn't get to be so popular by being a bad drive. Mine is fantastic. Most likely it comes down to the media you are using. The 1620 prefers + media, and Taiyo Yuden's at that. Truly excellent burns. All burners were not created equal. Do research on what works best with what.

    No, not always. Simply check for any burn rings. If none, you should try the disk again before chucking it.

    Excellent drive. Auto bitsetting, over-speed 8x to 12 and 16x with some media. I'm averaging under 10K PI and 1K PIF with KProbe. This drive prefers good +R media! Don't bother using -R with it, yet.
