As for which has the higher proportion of GNU/Linux instances in the wild (x86 vs x86_64), I really don't know and haven't seen any statistics on the subject (I haven't looked, either). I'd guess x86, but not for the reasons you stated: A) The drivers in the kernel source tree are open source...

Will a quality ~$120 PSU now be outdated 2-3 years from now?

Assuming they don't come out with a 16-pin pci-e connector and such soon, you should be alright with any new psu of worthwhile quality (such as the corsair & seasonic mentioned).

Depends on the distro. Fedora is about the only I've personally used that doesn't fall on its face in this regard and require chroots or exotic configure arguments, though at the expense of having two copies of a lot of rpms installed (one x86_64, the other i386; and you can't get around this...

i have that exact $40 fsp model that's being recommended. Have had it for a year or so, powering a pretty decent rig. Between the EarthWatts and the AX400, I would go for whichever is easiest for you to pick up or specific features you need/want (cable length, type of fan, connectors, warranty...

Seagate HD's hate me

What you describe is common from seagate and WDC (from my experience) in the last few years. Were you able to get seagate to rma? They wont let me rma any of these drives that are doing exactly what you describe because they pass their diagnostics cd. :(

i think you guys should take this to PM's... to the OP: pretty much any psu mentioned so far in this thread will do you right and allow for a complete reasonable system upgrade. I wouldn't go any cheaper than the Fortron unit I mentioned, and would probably go for the Corsair unit(s)...

X800XL exploded, what replacement

this is the second time frys has done the bfg 7950gt 512 deal, and both times not a single store has had any that werent open box returns, if they had any at all. And i live where there are 4 frys stores within a 20minute drive :(

FRY's B&M e4300 + ECS Mobo - $149+tax

Good, Quiet PSU?

"good and quiet" sounds like a seasonic or corsair to me :) I'd say the seasonic s12-430 should be able to power whatever your antec 450 was powering. The corsair 520 isn't a whole lot more though if you find a deal. Or if you can find this, it'd be good, pretty quiet, and affordable.
